To install the Ask Alexa widget, first make sure you have the Amazon Alexa app installed and updated to the newest version. Then, hold down an empty space on your iPhone home screen. Tap the plus sign in the top left corner. Then, type in Alexa in the search bar. Select Amazon Alexa. At the bottom, tap Add Widget. Place the Alexa widget where you’d like it on your home screen, then tap Done. To use the Ask Alexa widget, simply tap it to activate it. Then, you can ask Alexa questions, have her tell you jokes, and more.
If you want to be able to activate Alexa without having to tap the widget, there is a workaround to activate it with your voice, using Siri Shortcuts. To set up a Siri Shortcut for Alexa, open the Shortcuts app. Then tap the plus sign to create a new shortcut. Select Open App. Tap App, then select Amazon Alexa. Change the name of your shortcut to Ask Alexa. The name will double as the command used to have Siri run this shortcut. Once you’ve set this up, simply say Hey Siri, Ask Alexa to open the Alexa app. From there, you can say “Alexa” to activate the voice assistant and use it as normal. This is a bit of a workaround, but it effectively makes it possible to use Alexa on your iPhone hands-free.
