Dear sewing Friends, if I am talking too fast for you in this video - you can always watch it at 0.75 speed. If you're not sure how to do it - just google it, it will shows you where to click :) and yes, the phrase of the day is "play around", lol, I guess my mind really took liking to it in this video :)

Prewashing all your fabric is so key. I also use the smaller seam allowance and I normally make seams that look like a shirttail hem but with two pieces of fabric.

I am an accidental seamstress for 17 or 18 years now, hard to believe it'sbeen that long and I have long ago lost count of the garments and people I've helped. I do mostly alterations for friends and acquaintances of my daughter's and their friends and families, often time in emergencies and trying financial situations and I would always recommend the larger seam allowances because that gives you an alternative where the small seam allowances don't give you any. I've had to cringe a few times when I have had to use material from the hem of a bridesmaid's gowns to add strips down the torso or bodice for the dress to fit when there was no time or money or alternative. It worked, they were beautiful, most people didn't notice or thought it was intentional but I knew. It was still better then having them pass out from lack of oxygen or the seam or zipper rip spilling them out in the middle of the ceremony and them being completely embarrassed but I think you can always do something with to much but you can't with to little, lol I take that same approach to cooking too! I love your videos and adore your voice, enthusiasm, and inspiring artistic creativity. I'm learning a lot from your videos and I very much appreciate it! I live in Kentucky, I'm country so that's close enough distance in my opinion to say hi neighbor!!!!
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Год назад
Kris, hello there! Thank you for sharing your insight and amazing experience :) thank you for doing what you do, I am sure all of these people were happy to have your help! I think it is totally great to have different opinions on the topic, at the end of the day - there are so so many ways how to go about things in sewing and I can totally see your reasoning. In my case - I never had any problems with smaller seam allowances, I LOVE using smaller seam allowance as it gives such neat results, especially in curves and setting in sleeves, but then again I don't alter for other people and I don't fluctuate in weight. People juts have to find what works for them :) and yes - hi, neighbor! :)

I want to make a skirt for a friend. Can I place a old skirt on the fabric, then move the skirt over so that the other side ( backside) is figured in. And then just have an elastic waistband and one seam in the back. Do you think this will work? Thank you for your great videos.
@ThoughtfulCreativity
@ThoughtfulCreativity Год назад
Janice, how did I just only now see this comment come in??? I am so sorry! As for your question - yes you can! You can have a skirt with one seam and even with no seams (circle skirt). This should definitely work, juts news to think about "connecting and elimination" of the side seam and a smooth transition there. I have done pencil skirt with only one center back seam.

I think if you tend to stick to a color palette when you sew (or buy rtw) you already have a leg up on using scraps. I learned a long time ago that no matter how cute the design, if I wouldn't wear it in a rtw garment, I won't wear it in a me made garment. I save those for gifts or home decor items.
