Sounds stupid but growing up without a father figure I never learnt how to do basic things like this. I’ve always thought my self as I’ve gone. RU-vid is honestly such a life saver for so many things I’ve never learnt/learnt improperly. Thanks man I really appreciate it!!

I never showed much interest when my Dad was showing me this kind of thing, but somehow some of it stuck. Now he's not here it's so useful, just like he said it would be. I'm totally still learning though, I think you never stop!

dreamingcode Thank you for your comments. Getting feedback like this helps me know that I'm on the right track as I continue to make videos. Sometimes when I'm shooting a video on a subject like this I'm wondering if it will actually be something that people find useful. From comments like yours I know that on at least this video I did exactly that. I'm glad you found it helpful and I hope that I gained your subscription. BurbBilly

You can still safely make good quick cuts without the sacrificial 2x4s. Place both horses close enough that there is light upward pressure in the center. With something fragile like ply, you'll want a second pair of hands or 3rd horse to help catch. For boards etc. single handed with 2 horses is fine, it'll fall gently and predictably. Perfect for long and awkward pieces that are difficult to manage on a table, using handsaw or chainsaw, etc. You can even control the direction of the fall forward by setting the 2nd horse at an angle instead of parallel. Let gravity work for you and life is easy.
@jackpine4347
@jackpine4347 Год назад
With a sacrificial piece(s) of lumber under your workpiece you do not need a 3rd sawhorse or an extra pair of hands to safely cut. This is particularly true for long narrow boards like a 1x6 that might need to be ripped. Since you barely cut into the sacrificial pieces they will last for a long time.

Safety is often overlooked, especially a saw horse. Clamps should be used to hold down plywood or other woodworking.

One of the unsafe thing I was doing was putting OSB on a table that was bit too high and making inaccurate cuts.Right now,I'm making one which is more safer and with more accurate cuts.

My sawhorse is a Stanley plastic one. It tilts and start to rock, when you apply force along the direction of the wood/sawhorse legs. Any advice? I'm scared it will start to tip or tilt as I start a cut..

Great old video, I suggest nail down the woods so you have a line to cut your sheet make it like a table. I use an old rusted saw probably bought years ago still work but just not too straight I wonder if I should upgrade to a battery or new saw.

How he’s doing this Is it good to cut 1x10 and 1x12 boards like this too with the 2x4s for support under neath ? Cause how come I see guys saying don’t do it it will bind or jam so have it fall off but I was seeing this and needing to cut long length boars up to 35 inches so is this the best safest way like he’s doing ?

Billy, I would have loved to see you actually cut using this method so I can understand how you set the depth so you didnt cut your below beams. Thanks for posting this. I have them in the garage & I want to use them for cutting. Is that a circular saw?

Should the 2x4's be clamped down before being used as a cutting surface? Thanks for your video!
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 8 лет назад
+John Taylor Good question.... It's always good to secure things if you can but in this case I never have. If you put down a 4x8 sheet and its 8 foot 2x4s then the clamps would be in the way. For this set up is say try and work without. As long as you don't lean on them you should be fine. Do it my way one time and see how it goes for you. If you don't feel comfortable with it then throw on some clamps. Thanks for the post.

Hey Billy. What guage nail gun do you recommend to do simple crown molding and if I want to get into making small furniture pieces? Also which miter saw would be a good starter to get. My buddies say a 10" is good. Thanks Billy.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 9 лет назад
nj2va08 If you're getting your first nail gun / compressor and you live in the States I'd suggest going to Home Depot or Lowes and looking for a combo pack. The reason for this is once you start using it you're going to find you'll want a brad nailer and a stapler as well as a trim nailer. My main gun is a porter cable 16 ga but I also use a Senco and depending on the size of mold I use 8d finish nails with my Senco. They also have these micro pinners out now(i don't have one.....yet) and those are cool because you can hardly see where the nail went in. You should be able to pick up a combo kit pretty cheaply, when you spec it out look at what you are getting individually and when you add it all up the combo usually wins out. I saw a compressor and nailer on sale for less money than the nailer alone! Hope this helped you BurbBilly
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 9 лет назад
nj2va08 As far as a mitre saw goes 10 inch is good. I carry a 10 inch Dewalt with me at all times on my truck and it handles about 90 percent of what i run into. That said if you're doing some big crown you will need to look at a sliding compound or a 12" sliding compound mitre to handle the cuts. My guess is that if you pick up a 10 inch you'll be fine for most of what you do. And if you have one place you need a 12 inch try and find a buddy that will lend you one :-) they are usually expensive! Before you buy think about what you'll mostly be cutting with it and that will point you in the direction you need to go. BurbBilly

The Burb Billy Thank Billy! I saw a Hitachi miter saw at Lowes for around $120 on sale from $140. Yea, I won't be doing anything elaborate with the crown molding. I'll also be adding some simple baseboards too. I can't wait to begin my 1st project of many!
