How to Use the Easy Vap Oxalic Acid Vaporizer Gun to Treat for Varroa Mites in a Honey Bee Hive

I have had tremendous success using Oxalic Acid Vapor to treat for Varroa mites in my hives. Here is one way to treat which I have found to be effective. It is efficient and does a good job. You can treat the bees quickly and so this is a good option if there are a lot of bees to treat. I hope you like the video and find it helpful.
Update: As of January 2021 Johno has retired and no longer makes this product. I purchased a new vaporizer that I really like. Check it out at: Lorobbees.com
Here's the link to a video I made after I received the vaporizer:

Being short on time, I fast forwarded through your video, but thanks for posting this; exactly what I was looking for! What I'm trying to find is a way to order the Easy Vap. I just tried sending an email to an address I found on the BeeSource forum. Hopefully they'll get back to me. My hives' mite counts are way too high, and two of my friends swear by the Provap 110. However, at roughly $500, that's not an option for me right now. I'm glad another friend told me to search for alternatives on RU-vid, and your video came up high in the results. The blooper at the end made me chuckle, so I liked and subscribed. Thank you again!

Bruce thanks for the video. very educational! I just received the easy vap from JohnO. cannot wait to try it out. I only have a few hives but I was tired of the wand method. seems you drilled a hole in the bottom box instead of the bottom board, I guess that works as well. I have an outlet in my F250 that can put out up to 400W, you think that will heat up the vaporizer or should I get the inverter? my hives are not around an electric source so would have to use a battery.

When all the numerals are where you want the temperature to be, press set key.” Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Obviously, you wouldn't do this if it killed the bees. However, how do you know how much oxalic acid to use? Sort of scared that I'd kill the queen.
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 лет назад
I have a 1 gram scoop and the recommended amount is 1 gram per hive body. I usually use one scoop for the first box and then around 1/2 to 1 scoop per box for additional boxes. The bees seem to tolerate it well even if I overdo it a little sometimes. As a matter of fact the bees absolutely thrive. It only seems to take them a few minutes to resume business as usual when the treatment is complete. Have never noticed any real loss of bees or the queen when using either this method or the wand method. OAV seems safe for the bees but is deadly to mites. I have nothing but good things to say about this method. It is a good idea to wear protective gear though. I don’t always do it but try to stay upwind or stand a distance away when using OAV Vapor. I do have a mask and goggles that I can use if I feel like I am going to get more exposure. The mask should be rated for Organic Acid Vapors.
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 лет назад
The one gram scoop I use is about equal to 3/4 of a teaspoon if measured using water. I tested it the other day.

Good system. JohnO has a winner! I noticed your wood fence so I am assuming you live in a neighborhood? If so, does your neighbors complain about your bees? 🐝
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 лет назад
No they don’t complain for the most part. I did have some neighbors complain about bees around their pool last summer so I set up some water sources. The bees love them but hopefully they will stay away from the pools. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LFgbgmgF35Y.html Otherwise the neighbors who know about them have no issues that I know of. Most of my bees are in other locations but my neighborhood is a great spot. The bees seem to do well here. I call it my “Bee Lab” because I try a lot of new things here. It is easier to experiment and try different things when they are close by. 🙂
@PhillipHall01
@PhillipHall01 5 лет назад
I had not thought of the pool and water as being a potential problem in a suburban beekeeping situation. I hope that the water set-up that you have installed does the trick. I may come back later in the summer and ask how this is working out if you don't mind? Thanks, Phillip
@brucesbees

The bees for some reason can be attracted to pool water. I put these watering stations out last summer and the neighbors did not mention it again so I hope they worked. I like you am curious to see if there are any issues this year.

The Provap to my mind is one of the biggest ripoffs in beekeeping, sourcing most of the parts using reasonable quality is less than $150, on the cheap less than $75, How can they justify the price they charge? I have the basic one, 12v, $20 from aliexpress but waiting for parts to make the Provap copy. Having both a lathe and milling machine i can make it even cheaper than posted above.
@brucesbees

Yes I was thinking about ordering the Provap but I am glad I found out about Johnno. Good product and way cheaper. I think I paid $165 including shipping. It was worth it to me. Even if it breaks I can order another one or two for the total price of the provap. Have been pleased so far. Thanks!

The same reason why I'm looking around myself. I figure for 165 I should be able to get enough treatments beat the wands' lifespan. I've seen some as low as 45 but am skeptical about the cheap stuff. And 495 for the pro gap is ridiculous. Most of us are hobby beekeepers and that price is just too much. I'm searching for something that can do the same thing for a lower price.
@incubatork
@incubatork 5 лет назад
@@beebob1279 For hobby use and a dozen or so hives you can use the simple 12v wand type, i have one and got it foe 19€ on aliexpress, it takes about 3 minutes per hive with a good battery, i use an old tractor battery that does not hold a charge fore more than a month and just charge it before use. I now have almost everything to make a provap copy, i think on jc's bees there are easy follow videos to make one. having a small lathe and milling machine it should not take long.

how long do you leave towel on after treatment?
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 лет назад
Not long. I usually treat 8 or 12 hives and then move the towels as needed for more hives. I am getting efficient enough now that it is tough to keep up. The vaporizer works so fast that it is hard to move towels and fill cups fast enough. I don’t know if there is any set amount of time but my towels usually stay in the hives anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. This method fills the hive so fast that there is no doubt in my mind that it reaches every corner of the box.
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 5 лет назад
I need to do another video now that I am more efficient. but truth is that I don’t do everything exactly “by the book” with regards to protective equipment. It is difficult to wear a mask and goggles under a bee veil, especially when it is hot and humid. I usually just try to stay upwind and avoid breathing the fumes. Probably not the best idea though I have had no issues with it.

The temp is to high, out of sublimation range so you decarboxylase oxalic acid and formic acid, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are made in this way. What this means? This treatment is so less effective against varroa in comparison to proper sublimation. Reduce the temp into sublimation range!
