The common medical approach to psychiatric disorders is to treat the symptoms. But the truth is that we just don’t know how the biological, psychological, and social risk factors and symptoms of these problems fit together. We don’t know what the underlying pathology is. I was excited to talk to Dr. Christopher Palmer who is disrupting the paradigm of psychiatry, about new ways of treating psychiatric disorders, specifically with the ketogenic diet and mitochondrial repair.
Dr. Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders-conducting research, treating patients, writing, and speaking around the world on this topic.

I’m thrilled to see this finally being discussed. After being diagnosed in late teens with low self esteem which graduated to chronic depression ( medication started) , then added anxiety. Long story short. Been on almost every psychiatric drug known. Thank you, spent the last 5 years weaning off all pharmaceuticals and have seen and felt significant changes. A long way to go yet, at 61. Functional medicine is only for the affluent in Canada 🇨🇦. Grateful for the baseline archaic medical practices. I’ve learned so much here Dr. Hyman. Once you see it, can’t unsee. Dreaming of functional medicine for all on this planet. Thank you for sharing your brains, knowledge and wisdom. Diet-who knew. Not much money unless your pushing sugar.. 🧐 Just got fired by a third doctor yesterday. As soon as I questioned him about functional medicine and not treating symptoms while bypassing the causes. Excited for changes. Dr. Weil, ahead of his time for sure.

Nice and all but by 61 haven't you figured most of the nutrition and holistic methods out for yourself? You've been to dozens of doctors in over 40 years. Maybe this doctor was the wrong doctor for you. You also probably came across aggressive and he makes enough money and does not want to deal with your negativity. Just a guess.

@@sayusayme7729 I expected this from you. Emotional reaction with a quick attempt at a cheap insult. That is your problem and why he dumped you. You likely have a long history of this behavior that he read in your long chart. When you don't get your way, you lash out at others in a very immature manner. This smart doc wasn't having it. I only speak the truth and you are allergic to the truth- unless it's your truth. You likely either LOVE people or HATE them- very little in between, except for us "trolls." Your words and attempt to bully me does not bother me at all. Some people simply do not want to take any accountability for themselves. They want others to fix them. Newsflash- no one has it easy in this life. We all struggle- don't be so selfish to think you are the only one- and you deserver any more attention than anyone else. You know who deserves attention? The good people of Ukraine who are legit suffering. Bother someone else with your pettiness and cheap insults.

I spent 41 yrs in hell. Meds, therapy, psychiatrists, nothing helped much. Relationships destroyed, health destroyed. Trauma induced learning disabilities, deep never ending depression, bipolar II and borderline. 4 yrs ago, when I was planning my suicide, shopping for urns... I knew I hadn't tried everything, a huge diet overhaul was needed and I always knew it. However, I couldn't imagine quitting sugar and carbs, as food was my only friend; my only support, hobby, comfort, medicine. I knew I had to figure out a way to get myself into ketosis. I took my time learning all about keto way of eating and I eventually did it. Keto chocolate was instrumental. Long story short, I have never had a bipolar episode since I started keto and have not needed any medication. It's been 4 years! Now, I'm just focusing on all the trauma I've suffered from childhood and from living in this society with the stigma of mental illness. Now I'm starting to help others with going keto and healing their trauma . I also have normal PAPS which I never had, and my tinnitus disappeared.

What a beautiful story, I saw a transformation in a family member when I was a child. We joined a church that talked about nutrition, we changed from wonder bread to whole wheat which at that time was less toxic, from sugar to honey, and other small changes, and she literally became a different person. Thank you for speaking out.

This is so awesome! There's hope! I have had OCD since I was a very young child. Hospitalized as a teen for it and anorexia and suicidal attempts. The weight loss and limit of food types eased some of the psychiatric symptoms. Then after several extreme losses and ending up homeless a down spiral added weight gain, autoimmune disorders of IBS (blood iron of 2) then what they said was chronic candidiasis and lupus. Lost some of the weight first ...then my husband passed away from colon cancer...homeless again....fast weight loss...but, got healthier! Now 20 years later, I do low carb OMAD and all my numbers are great. The OCD is so under control. I really believe it was the extreme elimination and slowly adding things back while learning what to always avoid that has given me a real life! Diet should be the first thing looked at. Each individual has their own set of attacks against their lives that can culminate in the perfect storm that takes them down. Thank you for these videos especially because our own doctors don't want to hear it when we try to share what's working. I have even been threatened with having to look elsewhere for a doctor because of sensitivity to flu shots..(got pneumonia both times I had one and developed asthma! )It's ludicrous!

Insulin resistance and/or metabolic dysfunction almost always precede bipolar, schizophrenia, manic depression etc. Some forms of major depression are also due to this whilst others are driven mainly by inflammation eg. mast cell activation, food sensitivities, gluten intolerance/celiac etc. or nutritional deficiencies like low B12, iron or amino acids due to being vegan or SIBO.

Of course nutrition works but I thought doctors were not allowed to talk diet or go against FDA guidelines or risk losing their insurance/licenses. They are suppose to diagnose and prescribe drugs. There are no billing codes in the current system for Kale. Just heard your hospital is backing you up- very nice. It's very simple, if someone is hung over, they are not thinking straight. If they came to you depressed (hung over), you would not give them more drugs or surgery or even a bunch of talk therapy. You would generally want to get them to a healthy and sober state of mind first. Before you paint a house, it's the PREP work that needed to make sure it turns out well. Get them off the processed foods. Address insulin resistance, gut health, obesity, metabolic dysfunction. This is all equivalent to getting them sobered up first. It is common sense. My plumber knows this and so does the entire medical industry. They are a bright bunch. The problem is that there is simply not much ongoing money in prevention, making and keeping people healthy. Ongoing disease treatment is the honey hole and business is good. The Processed Food industry alone takes in over 1.5 TRILLION annually.

Because keto diet is a verified treatment for weight loss and epilepsy, it can be used "off label" to treat a psychiatric patient for weight loss. No risk there, but you need to do it in that way currently, at least until it is recognized as an official treatment, which will hopefully come after big RCT's after the current RCT's show viability. But yes doctors can do it now, just needs to be labeled as such.
@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT 2 года назад
@@CashMoneyMoore Right. Sadly 99.999% of docs would not even know where to start. 99.999% will label a person then throw drugs at said person. Nice, neat billing codes for that as well as the occasional Hawaii trip. Sad system that puts profit ahead of patients.

I only have 35 years of clinical experience but I’d venture to say there is no single answer. Biomarkers are important, so the more unrefined and unprocessed foods, the better. Avoiding class 1 carcinogenic foods is important. Daily physical activity is important.

Unfortunately, many followers of the silly keto diet are fully wed to carcinogenic foods that will also destroy your cardiovascular health.

A BIG MOVE in educating people and making this type of diet and healthy food available is so important. Thank you for this work!!

Excellent! Infinite Thanks for your good work. So When will you be opening a mental institution that treats people in this way, with these interventions? A mental institution without “pharm”? An insurance covered metabolic mitochondrial mental institution ? If it’s successful then another will open and another and another……am I dreaming or is this possible??

My daughter is heading to University next year… she is fascinated by Psychology mainly because she is trying to understand her own experiences w Dyslexia, Anxiety, Depression, etc. I would love her to get into the field of functional healing to treat mental health… This is the future, not therapy and pills. I saddens me when I read through her course work and see the ‘same old,same old’ concepts and treatments being churned out into the minds of youth. Any advice for her about where/what to study as she ventures into her educational the future ? In the meantime, thank you both for helping people in such an unselfish and open hearted way.

Good food at perhaps a farmers market can be just as good. Buy less. Eat less. Don’t waste. Grow your own. Find a way. The best thing is to stop junk food. Cook your own. Even that makes a difference.
