BUILDING LANGUAGE PATTERNS
Tātou - tāua
Mātou - māua
Rātou - rāua
Koutou - kōrua
From the last few posts you'll be starting to get an idea of what these words mean. However, they can still be quite confusing to learn for one key reason; they're all so similar yet have vastly different meanings
So how can we simplify the learning process for these words?
Well, we can start by looking at a few of the patterns that are present. Here are a few different patterns (or "rules") that you can use to make learning these words simpler:
Word Length
You'll notice that tātou, mātou, rātou and koutou all have more letters than tāua, māua rāua and kōrua. Further more, tātou, mātou, rātou and koutou all refer to a group of people consisting of 3 or more people, while tāua, māua, rāua and kōrua represent 2 people only.
Here you can associate the longer words with the larger amount of people. So:
If word length = long
then,
of people referred to = +3
(Long word = lots of people)
If word length = short
then,
of people referred to = 2
(Short word = only 2 people)

Word Association Based on First Letter
Tātou and tāua always include (at least) the listener and the speaker.
What is a word you could associate with this? Perhaps "Together". It starts with T and is a very inclusive word, much like the meaning of tātou and tāua.
Mātou and māua always include the speaker and another person/s associated with the speaker, and always excludes the listener.
What is a word/phrase you could associate with this?
Perhaps "me and my mum". A lot of the words start with M, and when we would typically say this phrase In English we are speaking in a way that includes "mum" (and we're referring to her as if she's not part of the conversation) but not necessarily including the person we are talking to, similar to the meaning of mātou/māua.
Rātou and rāua always involve "other people" and never include the listener or the speaker. What is a word/phrase you could associate with this?
Perhaps "runaway" might be a suitable word. We could picture a group of people "running away" and associate this with people that are not part of the conversation...and we can associate the R from runaway with rātou/rāua
Koutou and kōrua always include the listener and someone associated with them, but never the speaker.
What is a word/phrase you could associate with this?
Perhaps "kids in kindergarten"...in the sense that a teacher is often speaking to, telling off and directing "kids" around. You could begin to associate the K with talking to a particular person and their associate/s, or directly to a larger group of people.

These are just a couple of simple techniques you can use to help associate particular words and phrases together.
Happy learning
