"Welcome to 'Starting In Te Reo Māori' - Your Gateway to Language Revival and Cultural Reconnection! 🌱
I'm Grant Whitbourne, the founder of this empowering initiative. 'Starting In Te Reo Māori' is more than just a channel; it's a movement dedicated to preserving the enduring legacy of Te Reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand.
My personal journey, originating from Australia but deeply connected to the Te Whānau-a-Apanui heritage, is at the heart of this channel. I intimately understand the challenges that new learners face when embracing a language pivotal to their culture but often shrouded in confusion
Through my transformative experience of reconnecting with Te Reo, I found a profound purpose. Now, as a loving parent, I'm on a mission to pass on this invaluable heritage to my children and create a bridge for others to embark on the same journey.📚

This is just such an awesome channel! I’m 35 and have looked into learning Te Reo many times. But for some reason everything I have looked at has intimidated me and always ended up in the to hard basket. You make things so simple and easy to understand. I’m pregnant with my second baby and my husband speaks Punjabi in the home and it breaks his heart that I can’t speak my mother tongue and he’s decided to learn Te Reo as he wants our children to know where they come from. So I am on an absolute mission to learn Te Reo. ( I can’t have him speak my language before me 🤣) so thank you for sharing your gift and inspiring me.

Great video, well done. You are so right about what adults need to focus on (compared to kids) when learning a new language. When I was living in Chile I had to learn Spanish as quickly as possible and yes, it is the high frequency day-to-day words that you suddenly discover you need in order to get by (and to survive in general). Those are the words you need to learn as quickly as possible which are also the ones that stick in your mind due to their repetition.

A little tedious, but you absoloutely nailed it, first language learning is tied up with learning concepts, second language learing is a different process, we're learning how to structure communication in a language.

This is really useful and smart. I’m not even in Aotearoa, I’m just some random european trying to learn Arabic and Welsh, but your wisdom applies to the learning of any language. Thank you.
