It seems to be all the rage, the Solar Eclipse happening on April 8, 2024. The states in the middle of the USA will get to see most of the eclipse this month. However, it's not smart to gaze into the sun without proper eye protection. You can use a welding hood or helmet to watch the eclipse safely, but it must be a shade of 12 or higher, as recommended by NASA. ISO 12312-2:2015.

Some of the newer auto darkening helmets won’t darken with sunlight, only welding arc. Nice feature if you’re welding out in the sun but not so good for viewing an eclipse.

Sometimes, as soon as you look at the sun, place your hand over the sensor (looks like solar panel) and then move your hand, it will trigger and darken. Then it will stay dark. Good point though. Thanks for watching.

@@Shoptoolreviewstried that and it does darken for a second but it goes right back every time. It won't stay dark no matter what 😞

Will be using my Shade 14 lens I purchased in Columbus Ohio in 2017 from a guy who posted on Craigslist he had HUNDREDS Of them and I spread the word to my friends coming from NY and everyone got them too! Im in Rochester NY now and may stay home or relocate just a couple miles out to the south in case of treeline obstruction but I think were good to go as long as the clouds stay at bay. Enjoy !

Good to know my welding helmet will work. I purchased 10 sets of ISO approved glasses for $10 so that I and my grandkids can watch the solar eclipse. Pretty reasonable in my estimation.

Pretty cheap buy for sure, and much cheaper than a welding hood. The welding hoods do a great job at blocking out all the surroundings as well. Thanks for watching.

I only have shades number #11 will that work? I actually have 2 of them glasses number 11 if I put them together will be safer? since I'll be wearing a number 22 shades
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 2 месяца назад
#11 will be a little too bright to watch for extended periods. Yes, doubling the lenses will increase the shade, but I don't know that it makes it #22.

I used a shade 13 out of my jackson truesight 2 auto hood. It's an expensive hood so I probably got the best eclipse view in ohio history 🤓 lol. I wish my hood had shade 14. My eye's hurt a little bit but it might be lotion dripping into my eye's from sweating. Hopefully I didn't damage my eyes 🤞.

do you have a suggestion on how to ensure the auto darkening STAYS ON for the entirety of the eclipse? my boyfriend suspects the auto darkening depends on a light sensor sort of like those solar charging calculators, and thinks maybe we can get them to permanently stay dark by piping more voltage in. do you think this is unnecessary, or have a less invasive idea? we're both a bit concerned about the helmets flickering on/off, especially when the moon is blocking most of the sun. we have two chicago electric helmets, one is a 61610 and the other is a 63122

Turn your cellphone light on and point it at the censor, and you probably will hardly notice the cellphone light?
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 2 месяца назад
Most of the time, if they flicker or don't recognize the sun as an arc, you can fool the sensor by placing your hand over it for a moment. Or, try the cell phone light (flashlight) trick.
@ryans1972
@ryans1972 2 месяца назад
I just tried it and sun is about 1/4 covering the sun here in center of Illinois. A cellphone light did not work. What works for my helmet is constantly waving my hand with small motions over the sensor and it keeps the display constantly dark.
@toycoma98

Mine doesn't have a test button, so i have to wave my hand over the sensor to activate the darkening.

Mine is shade 10! The guy at the store said above Grade 92 will work and mine is grade 96, is this safe for watching the Eclipse?
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 2 месяца назад
We're not making that recommendation. NASA says #12 or darker and ISO 12312-2 states a #12 or darker. You'll have to make that decision for yourself. Thanks for watching.

#16 shade or two #8 shades put together is perfect. #12 shade is still too bright for me. The #8 shade is commonly used for oxy acetylene cutting. Test what your going to use just by looking at the sun with it. If it looks too bright than it probably is too bright.
