Good basic waxing video Tommy! Out of interest what were you looking at when you were filming this? I only ask as while viewing, you appeared to be looking way above the camera. I love waxing my board, I consider it a very Zen activity. Personally I do the following (warning, lots of details): 1. Remove Bindings 2. Check for any base damage and check edges for damage or burrs. 3. Clean with base cleaner, at least twice. 4. Warm up the board with a hairdryer (this opens up to pores in the P-Tex and allows for greater wax absorption) 5. Drip wax around the edges and then do some zigzags across the board when you’ve completed a circuit around the edges. 6. Melt wax into board using a circular motion always moving the iron, I work from nose to tail. 7. Once all the wax is melted, go VERY slowly from nose to tail in a straight line with the iron, do this in lines until you’ve covered the whole board. The idea here is to leave a trail of melted wax behind the iron and this way you’ll know you’ve not missed any spots. 8. Leave to cool 30+ minutes 9. Scrap the wax pulling the scraper towards you until all the wax has been removed. Make sure to check your edges for any wax that may have dribbled down the sidewall! If your scraper has a notch cut out of it, run this around the edges (which is what it’s designed for) to remove any stray wax. 10. Grab a 3M green pad and work from the nose to the tail in straight lines with decent pressure, this will remove any extra wax you can’t see (the green pad will go white with wax), also if your base doesn’t have structure in the P-Tex (grooves that have been added by the manufacturer), it will add tiny grooves in the P-Tex (not damaging your board) which will make you go a tonne faster as it will make the water (melted snow) go in one direction down your base when riding. 11. Once the 3M pad is clean, grab a cork block and buff up that base! Work from the nose to the tail with a lot of pressure in straight lines, the more effort here, the better, this will make your base super smooth and super fast. Go and shred and enjoy the satisfaction of blasting past everyone on the mountain, especially on flatter sections where people struggle to hold their speed 😊 This is my waxing routine, it’s tried and tested, not everyone will want to put this much effort into waxing but I love it, it’s zen and the results speak for themselves 😉 Keep up the great work Tommy!
Tommie Bennett - Thanks Bro! I’ve heard of the technique but have never used as I’m in two minds about it. I do understand that the heat will draw out the dirt BUT by heating up the board with the wax you are pushing dirt into the P-Tex as well, so I’ve never done it. It may be a good idea to clean the board first with base cleaner and then use a hot wax scrape to pull up any dirt you can’t see from wiping after base cleaning?
First I clean the base. Then I do a prep wax with ch10 (yellow), with a semi hot scrape. I scrape when the yellow wax cools down enough so the top sheet is room temp but the base is still warm. Then I wax with the color that corresponds with the temp in the forecast. Mostly use swix CHxx but sometimes if I’m feeling extra fast I’ll use swix LFxx. I scrape just like Tommie, pull wax out don’t push it in. Then I use the brass brush, then nylon, then horse hair, and finally a dryer sheet. On a black base I can see my reflection. I do this after every 1-3 days on the hill. I am a nerd and I really like going fast.
My process of waxing a board is a little bit more intensive. I first brush the base of the board to try to remove most of the dirt off. Then I'll warm the base of the board with a hair dryer or a heat gun. Once the base of the board is warm, but not hot to the touch, I'll put on "cheap wax" on so that I can quickly "hot scrape" it off before it cools down. I do this hot scrape process multiple times pending how dirty the board is. Then once my hot scrape is completed then I'll warm the board once again with my hair dryer or heat gun. But this time I'll use some "good wax" to put on. Then after an hour of cooling then I'll scrape the wax off, then brush the board from nose to tail, then use a scotch brite pad from nose to tail, to polish up the board even more. This process is a little bit more labor intensive but I feel like this works best for me. I only use base cleaner at the end of the season when I go and put "storage wax" on it.
hey tommie when you say every 3-5 days you mean every 3-5 days on the mountain so if you snowboard twice a week you have to wax 1 time every 2 weeks right?
After scraping you should also go over your base with a nylon brush and then with a horsehair brush to really clean all the remaining wax on the base. Also make sure you scrape the wax on the edges.
When I saw that my heart stopped for a moment, but the iron was only stopped for a few seconds so no damage done. Check out angry snowboarder leaving an iron on a base to see how long it would be before it got wrecked 😳
I like the technique of scrapping I will have to try that next time. I also like to do a buff after scrapping with a piece of cork or scotch pad, probably doesn’t help much but that’s the way I’ve always done it
couple of things- 1 I just use a regular iron I bought at the dollar store. Have been using it awhile now and seems to work fine. So, what am I doing wrong by using a 'regular ' iron? 2. As temps can vary. I have learned to wax one board with reg or cold temp and a 2nd board with warmer/spring temp wax. This way, if one board does not feel right on the snow, I can grab my other as I like to ride fast with a slick board.
I don't have a board iron, bought a small conventional travel iron for clothes 😄. Does the job, upload a video of my method. One thing i did was mark out the position of the bindings with some nail varnish (my wife's, not mine!😄) on the board so that when i take them off for waxing, i know they'll go back to exactly how they were. 😉👍
It looks like the wax is smoking/steaming when it goes against the iron, isn't that too hot? I thought you weren't supposed to see that, or is a little ok?
i just bought the racewax starting kit and it didn't come with base cleaner is it a necessity? can i use some cleaner my mom has or just not clean the base at all?
Brendan base cleaner is generally a citrus based cleaning solution. Your mom likely has something like that you can use (most common is simple green). I would avoid other type of chemical solution or solvent as you never know how they would react with the board base.
Didnt know that biodegradable wax existed, nice one! Question I just got my board serviced and there's shiny spots n streaks here and there. Is this bad?
I dont feel glide differences between all temp and specific temp wax 95% of time. I think it’s more about the durability (cold wax will last longer than all temps when it’s cold). What make difference for me is a LF wax on hot, spring/summer, wet snow days.
Hey man. I just today got my new gnu deck and shouldnt have to wax til day 3 or 4, but what products would you recommend that i pick up from purl? Its an extruded base
Hi dude, does it makes any difference if the board is stone finished? I feel like I'm flattering the base while I scrape the wax off at the end of the process.... Thanks!
Same question, have you heard anything? Feel like I'm hurting my edges when I'm scraping off that wax. But I don't think it's good to tune post-waxing as it can get on the base and cause damage
Waxes, room temps can make it different, pree well if you want to test what temp turn it up till it starts smoking then turn it down till it stops smoking, since you don’t want to burn the wax ✌🏽💎
Steven Railey I heard that base cleaner / wax remover can dry the base too much and damage it permanently... I use the Swix base cleaner and never had that drying issue. Yes, it kinda dry the base, but in the « I want wax ! » way more than in the « I’m dead » way lol. I have a white base, so I can clearly see the dirt stains after some days of riding. I never could completely remove theses stains with the hot wax method. Base cleaner is easier, faster and works better for me.
@@tommiebennett i see i dont catch all the vids between you and buckhouse but everytime i see you it seems like youre wearing a different jacket lol anyway keep it up my dude... your riding is dope and your verbal delivery on w.e youre trying to convey is on point!!!
