I am Japanese and I love your sharing ideas on how to arrange and wear traditional kimonos in a western style. Your color coordination is beautiful and you arrange the kimonos like a Japanese flower arrangement. You also pick very good kimono patterns to work with.

Kimono Fusion and Wa-Lolita were how I got into kimono, so loved seeing this video! I practically lived in haori (and sometimes michiyuki) for many years before wearing kimono more often. It was great to see a few styles that aren’t represented in my class on “kimono fusion” so I’ll have to see about changing that! Great video...I know I’ll be sharing this with many people who have asked me how to wear kimono non-traditionally!

I don't have Instagram, but I have more ideas because I used to dress like this in college but now I prefer to dress simply: 1) kimono rain skirt, plain top, narrow obi (maybe yukata obi) tied the usual way, and if you really want to go for it, tabi and zori 2) wear your kimono with a shorter hem (around knee length) usual obi tied normally, slim jeans, high heels 3) wear plain top & bottom (skirt or pants) and wear contrasting color obi tied in a fun way like for yukata 4) for old kimonos with maybe an imperfection on the hem: cut in half, use the top part, wear as normal with obi tied the usual way (with top piece of a two piece nagajuban under), and your choice of bottoms, and reuse the skirt of the kimono for other things

I LOVE kimono and all kinds of traditional Japanese arts and aesthetics, I've been meaning to incorporate it more into my daily wear! I was pretty proud of myself last year, I made a Wa Lolita coordinate for our local Obon festival that my husband and I attend every year. I got a lovely vintage kimono bolt from Ichiroya for it, and one to make my husband a yukata as well at some point. Unfortunately, I can only make myself short haori length kimono tops with a vintage bolt, I'm plus size and have a very large chest. I really love Japanese street fashion though, so it's alright! I plan to get other fabric made to make a more traditional kimono, and I still have the vintage bolt for my husband! It has indigo dyed shogi pieces, very lovely but I haven't gotten haori fabric to match it yet. I've had issues with finding obi long enough as well, but I have some chronic pain issues that make them difficult to tie and sometimes require getting it off quickly anyway. I make "cheater" shopgirl style obis instead, with the knot sewn in place and a side closure. Maybe not the most accurate, but sometimes those of us with disabilities have to adapt things to work better. I've been wanting to make myself hakema for a very long time but I was afraid I'd never have a chance to wear them, so I'm glad to see how you styled yours! Anyway, I found you looking at the CoCoVid schedule and I can't wait to see more!!

I’ve been wearing haori in the way you’d wear blazers/coat much like the few first outfits in your video. It’s looks really cute ☺️. The kimono converted into a skirt is such a great idea! I really want a hakama now - awesome coord with the cute bow and all!

Hello, I love kimono, and have for years. I read a book about kimono, originally published in Japan, which mentioned the issue of the kimono back collar on women. I didn't, and still don't get it. There was something about the back of the neck being traditionally considered erotic, which is not my thing, but to each his own. I was more confused by some mention of the depth of the skin exposed having different meaning. Was that true, and does it still apply today? My guess is it may be complicated, to non-Japanese people, but I was thinking it might be an interesting video topic. Also, I enjoyed the ideas on how to blend kimono with Western clothing. Still, as someone outside of Japan, they all still looked like kimono. That is, I think even with the combinations that you modeled, you would still get second looks outside of Japan.I would just have prepare mentally for that to avoid being caught off guard. Thanks for the channel.

Love every look, and when you showed the hakama as a skirt i feel utterly in love XD I don't live in japan myself, but for the last few years my interest in fashion has grown and that look with the blazer is exactly the kind of casual blend i was hoping to strive for. I wanna be brave and just go for the full kimono but i don't live in the sort of place where that wouldn't get just constant odd looks. but this! This i think i could get away with so thanks so much!

I love this concept. I am a bit afraid of someone accusing me of cultural appropriation, which would be unfair, because the garments are worn in a respectful way. Anyways, what type of footwear would look good with these outfits? Also, aren't all those layers of fabric bulky and uncomfortable?
@maroulio2067
@maroulio2067 Год назад
From my travels, living abroad and also from watching lots of Japanese content, adapting kimono, etc. is not frowned upon at all. In fact, most cultures consider such a compliment, and I have even heart that cultural appropriation is an American notion. One instance- I am Greek and wear my very long hair in multiple braids, a style that goes back 5,000 yr. in Greece (check statues for reference) so I hope I am not seen as c.a. by any other culture.

Since I started wearing kimono regularly (in Europe! even for travel) I found to love mixing the items with normal clothing for more fun combinations. I very often used obi as belts over dresses or skirts, I'm tall so it brakes up the silhouette nicely. Also obi-jime quite often on pretty much anything. And of course all the ideas you showed here. Good thing I watched it back, last time I used a kimono as shirt for a skirt (wa lolita) I did wear it normally but the hem tucked like in your winter kimono video, the way you showed is simpler and doesn't tighten on the hips.

i would personally match a hakama with a decently long haori (or any loose coat in general) because i find the droopy sides to be kinda awkward 😅 that aside, i'll never get to wear a kimono (...yet) but i absolutely adore how you fuse it into daily wear 🥰 love from malaysia! x

I was gifted a haori and I’d love to wear it as a jacket with western clothes. The issue is - I’m a tall girl, so the sleeves are barely 3/4. Is it going to look funny on me? Is there a sleeve length rule if there is no kimono underneath? The haori is navy blue with pattern, fabric is a little stiff. No flowy summery boho chic vibe at all.

[5:18] Dear Billy, As much as I love the look of Japanese obi, I'm unable to afford and/or tie them up properly. So, I started looking at how sashes are decoratively knotted in western fashion. This got me thinking: Could a western sash be tied in an obi style(s)? If so, I'd really like to see what your thoughts are on the idea, and how you could do it. Thank you for your time and consideration!

I watched Usagi Komachi's tutorial to wear a kimono as a shirt with the subtitles on because i am just beginning to learn Japanese and thought it might help me. It did not. I did re-watch the video for her tutorial and it was very clear and I loved it. I have subscribed to her even though I can't understand her yet. I personally love deep teal and red combination but I never seen any for sale. Only one I ever seen was on Japan Fashion Week 2015 (Spring/Summer) by Jotaro Saito. Great job as usual. Some very nice mixes here. I will issue one correction, and only because this IS a clothing channel. ;) The jacket you were wearing is not a blazer, it is a sport coat. A blazer would have something like metal engraved buttons, a badge on the pocket, piping along the edges or be emblazoned with the insignia of an organisation in some other way. But most people don't use the term sport coat much anymore. The misconception likely comes from the the fact that, for so many people, their first acquaintance with the term blazer is with their school uniform.
