Sesshoumaru’s yoroi design is based on Chinese Ming dynasty armor due to the anime’s lore of battling against demons from “the continent” and he’s accustomed to his spoils of war. Rumiko Takahashi has a lot of Chinese influence in her work.
Id like to throw in a point as well, but the huge bit of fluff on his shoulder isn't actually part of his outfit. If you find the first time he's in his dog demon form you will see he also has the same fluff around him but far more wild. Now I've seen multiple answers from it being actually part of him,it being a sign of demon royalty, and apparently it being a demon parasite that acts as armor and a weapon. Heck, it even bleeds when damaged in the manga. Whatever it is, is alive and not a fashion statement.
It's not ming armor lol No one models such minor things. Claim it as fact only if the author admits it or it is 100% fact. Gaijin fans always claim that there is no evidence as if it were a fact. that's just your guess and imagination not fact I swear this is not Ming's armor
You mean ranma? Takahashi said The she came up with a cursed fountain as the cause of his transformation into a woman. She came up with the idea that if a curse fountain exists in modern times, it must be in China. That's the only reason China appeared That's why the main character went from Japan to China for training. It's not like the author takahashi has a particular attachment to China. If the main character goes to China for training, it's only natural that kung fu clothes will appear. Nothing special
LOVE this video!! Especially the bit about Daki's flower patterns being more of a 1920s design. If I remember right, Demon Slayer seems to be set in the 20s or so (at least from what the Western clothes look like, and the trains & cars we see at other points in the series). If so, then Daki is being super modern to her present era, & very trendy! I love that!
In terms of manga featuring accurate wafuku, everyone should really check out Noragami by Adachitoka! The manga features everything from modern kimono to religious garb to historical wear since the story has flashbacks ranging back to the 900s. The authors have clearly done their research and put a lot of love into drawing the clothing, not to mention that the narrative spins a very interesting and nuanced take on kami and Shinto mythology in modern day. I'd love to see Billy talk about the wafuku in Noragami one of these days 👀✨
I am just happy to see someone mention one of my favorite manga/anime. I have no knowledge of wafuku but Noragami holds a special place in my heart so knowing if they did it justice would be awesome to know.
Tanjiro’s haori is lined! Though that’s probably because that’s easier to animate than the patches XD You could probably do a whole video on Demon Slayer and it would be fascinating. There’s lots of characters wearing a mix of Japanese and western clothing.
Excellent. One of my moderators shared this in our Facebook group! InuYasha takes place in the 1540s. It was stated in the InuYasha Wide Edition #4. However Sesshoumaru was well and alive when InuYasha was born in the Kamakura period during the years of 1185-1333. Sesshoumaru's garment from the third movie during the Kamakura period is almost identical just different colors and patterns - And it's completely true it doesn't have furi. InuYasha and much like other characters within the series are wearing robes based on the suikan and Kariginu. The historical accuracies and inaccuracies are all over the place. But we can still learn a thing or two from this fiction series based on history. Absolutely love the video.
The clothes from Nara period are actually a Japanese version of Chinese hanfu which then became 十二単 juunihitoe. Almost all kami are shown wearing very Chinese inspired clothing.
For foreign readers i reccomended to Billy sensei if she did not see nurarihyon no mago to watch it as it has many wafuku appear in it.
Although it is influenced by China, it is a completely different kimono in terms of appearance and how to wear it. I wouldn't call this the Japanese version of Hanfu it's juuni hitoe not japanese version of hanfu. Juuni hitoe has many many layers and colors that are not found in Hanfu After Tang lost influence over Japan and abolished envoys to Tang(遣唐使) Japan decided to make a new kimono. it is a kimono redesigned by Japanese people under the influence of Hanfu. But not japanese version of hanfu
Yuuko wearing a mix of western/Japanese styles is a big part of her character because she and Clow Reed were famous in the magic world for combining western and Eastern magic, Clow being half english-half Chinese and her magical partner-in-crime. As for sesshomaru the show is set in sengoku jedai, which would've been right in between muromachi-edo period. Being as he's many hundreds of years old, it makes sense he's dressed more old fashioned. The armor is likely Chinese inspired due to him & his father canonically hanging out "on the mainland" (which could be Korea but is probably china) plus he's a demon so like yeah, probably doesn't follow human fashion that much XD
About your confusion on Daki’s hairstyle: Daki’s hairstyle is very accurate for the highest Oiran to wear! (the Oiran among Oiran) 😄 her name while in Oiran form was Warabihime
34:30 - Falling fabric is one of the worst things to animate. Typically, every piece of clothing needs to be tied to a piece of the animated body and then moves in exactly the same manner as that anchoring point. This however gets funky results if your clothing starts to get too far away from the actual body. Just think about it like... taping a ruler to your lower arm and move it around, turn the arm and... oh! the ruler just starts to stick out to the other side! No cloth would behave like that. To animate long sleeves, you'd need to not just define which anchor point certain parts of the clothes are attached to, you need to have software that allows to make the anchoring line to that anchor not be stiffly connected (as the ruler above) but hang from it in a certain fashion - like you'd hang a line with a weight. However, that is a *very* elaborate process, and easily quadruples the processing power needed.
This was really fun to watch! Even the bits where it's like "It's physically possible. It's technically an outfit. But... Why?" It's like watching someone put tiny pizza slices on pineapple, or me telling my German friends about the sentence "ich gehe im Kino" as an important illustration of a certain grammar rule.
These are so fun! Please do more! Also, Inuyasha is Sengoku! Its around 1550 I think because Kagome meets someone named Nobunaga and she is bummed out he isn't THE Nobunaga even thought he would have been the correct age for him. That and its 500 years in the past.
Yay sesshomaru is the one I wanted to see. 😂 the outfits look very cool to me! I wondered why I couldn’t find outfits like theirs. I’ll have to make my own! ❤❤
@@BillyMatsunaga there was a character that mentioned being alive in the Meiji era which is where the person may have got their info but tanjiro answers that character by saying it’s the Taisho era now
I literally made my Sesshomaru cosplay thanks to your tutorials! His costume has so many influences and clearly most of the details are pure fantasy, but it was so fun to make. As a pattern and costume maker your tutorials were so useful, and in general your channel is SO interesting and one of my favourite here on this platform 💗
I've read before that Sesshomaru's fluffy scarf thing is supposed to be his tail? But from what I can see, when he changes into his demon dog form he has a huge amount of fur in a different color making that shape, so maybe more like a mane/coat.
His fluffy thingy is named Mokomoko, and is armor of sorts, given to him by his father. It is also a living parasite that Sesshomaru uses to grab and choke things.- So says google :0
It's actually not. When he transforms, its clear his tail has very straight/ long fur, where the thing on his shoulder is super fuzzy and curls like a sheep hair. Also he uses it to trap Inuyasha once and it kind of gets longer than shorter, so it's a weapon (dog tails don't wrap around things like a snake). So it's an accessory/weapon of some kind. It it was otherwise, Inuyasha or any of Sesshomaru's other opponents might try to chop it off to cause pain.
I feel you can make the whole video about kimonos in XXXHolic. Clamp are usually great at costume designs. I wonder whether you have read Gate 7. The traditional costumes in that manga were exquisite.
Hi, Billy, just so you know, we do actually say "a concrete idea" in America, where I'm from. It's neat that it's a German phrase, too! :) Also, thank you for the video!
Thank you for the video! It was exciting to hear your input into the clothing designs! Especially the mix of kimono and western clothing elements. As far as Yuuko wearing Oiran/Tayu musubi, it could be because she's lazy and likes the easier way to tie it, or she likes the high style, or both. I still like the headcannon that Sesshoumaru and his father traveled in Asia, and wear some mix of things, especially if they are Foo Dogs. (ex. I think fire rats were supposedly from somewhere in mainland Asia).
I wouldn’t say it’s easier to put on like that. She also takes some time when dressing herself (there’s actually a scene), so definitely not laziness or easiness. She wears it because she’s stylish and likes it. And because she’s special of course 😊
I saw Warabihime-Oiran/Daki and I clicked so fast! I'm cosplaying her in the future so this video is very helpful. I've tried to study the proper way to wear a kimono and the history of Oirans for this cosplay, but there are not that much materiasl in English.
Concrete ideas are fine in English too! I'd love to see a video sometime about the different men's kimono in earlier periods like you mention at 30:12, what the differences are between them, how they evolved etc.
I feel like Kamisama Hajimemashita has a decent accuracy! I watched the show over and over and most of the characters wear many kimono's the kimono you wore in your bridal pictures looks so much like Nanami's from the show
I’d love to see you talk about Cherry Blossom from SK8 the Infinity! Since he’s a modern character that seems to take a lot of inspiration from traditional styles it would be awesome to hear your thoughts!
I loved this, I would also love to see a video about anime being turned into live-action and how they recreate what the characters wear. Thank you for the wonderful video!
I always thought it was a parasite not his tail. I could be wrong it's been YEARS since I looked it up, but I'm pretty sure the info said it was a parasite and the same kind his father wore.
I would like to say that Sesshomaru's scarf is likely his tail in his human form as we can see at certain points he knows when people are touching it. It has to go somewhere between the large doggo form and his human form and a scarf makes sense.
I love this video! Part of my enjoyment of anime is the flow and movement of the garments as opposed to more fitted western dress. XXXholic is a great blend of the two and thanks for including it.
I don't have any specific characters in mind, but I would love to see more like this one! Hearing your opinions on all of the different styles and outfits is very interesting to me. I really, really want to watch Princess Kaguya now, because that animation is so beautiful
That was very interesting! Speaking of mixing Western and Japanese, and later re-interpretations of historical clothing, I would love to see a video about the "Taisho Roman" style you see a lot in anime (and dating sims lol) because I like it, but all the research I've done has shown me no example of actual historical outfits mixing the 2 culture. In Taisho roman, you have girls with their hair only half-up, with a high collared shirt under a kimono, etc., while in the pictures I've found you see either women in complete kimono outfits, or "modern girls" wearing basically what trendy young women were wearing in Paris or New York.
This was a really fun video! I'm sure I annoyed my friends so much with my constant wafuku fun facts during that whole arc in Demon slayer. I'd be really excited to see you analyze the Medicine Seller from Mononoke!
11:46 actually, a “concrete idea” is also a phrase used in English all the time, your wording was correct! I’m surprised to hear the exact same phrase is used in German, now I’m curious as to how this came to be lol.
well, old English is a Germanic language, so maybe there? Modern English is really a bastardization of old English (Germanic) and French. I'm no linguist though; It could also just be coincidence. As a native English speaker (of the American variety), I can second that "concrete idea" makes sense.
Concrete idea is a term frequently used in my family's highly german-flavored english in that same sense, so I understood quite well what you meant. Specific is good, but.... more than just being specific, not only is is well-defined, but its definition is... set in stone, as it were.
I feel the modern oiran style is our way of representing the "feel" of being an oiran in today's senses. Trying to evoke the same emotional response to see it
Loved your wedding kimono 😃 It would be wonderful to learn more about wedding kimono (in shinto and other kinds of weddings if they outfits are different)
This was so interesting! I would be interested in your thoughts on those kimono/geisha dress up experiences maybe it would be interesting to see you experience one or some you would think be more historically accurate or otherwise think better.
Loved this idea for video! And I’m so happy to see xxxHolic and Inuyasha here! 💕 One tip I thought: I think it would be nice if there was an arrow pointing to the garment you’re talking about. The names in japanese are kinda hard to follow sometimes. But I really loved the video! Fun and informative 😊
This is a lovely video, thank you. I can't remember now where I read it (it might have been an interview with Neil Gaiman, actually) but apparently when they were animating Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki Hayao emphasised that Lady Eboshi's top layer is not a standard kimono, but a heavy man's coat that she styles like an uchikake. So your reading of it was pretty much perfect!
Thankyou so much for this! I hope it can be a series. I'm sure that lots of the details in the character designs adds information about them, & I'm so interested to hear your opinions!
That was interesting, but I didn't understand much of it because I'm completely unfamiliar with kimono. I wasn't able to remember all the words and what part or garment they stood for. My interest/hobby is historical costuming and fashion history in Europe, and I would like to know more about non-European historical costumes too, but it took me several years to wrap my head around the different time periods here, so every time I try to look into foreign styles I'm just completely overwhelmed. I am hoping you make even more videos about the historical development of kimono that a complete n00b can understand. ^ ^
22:53 So true! And this goes for every piece of media as well. I had troubles making a cosplay from a videogame, because the dress was clearly not designed around how fabric works in reality. After working with awfully blurry screenshots, I was kinda dissapointed when I found HD images of the actual model, seeing there's no way it works like that, not a single seam to be seen that could help me a bit lol
As a fellow CLAMP fan and cosplayer who has made many of Yuuko's costumes, I'm delighted that you enjoy her western and Japanese mixed style. I feel the same and you called out exactly why I like the anime and manga costumes so much more than those in the live action.
I highly recommend reading xxxHolic! It is still my favourite manga after all these years and Yuuko's and Kimihiro's styles along the series are honestly goals
“They’re inspired by, but they’re not real outfits” You mean Yura of the Hair’s generous two yards of cloth wasn’t historically accurate?? No! What a shock! 🤣
pretty sure inuyasha is supposed to be set in the sengoku period. also seshoumaru is not wearing a yoroi, he is wearing a "dou" which is the name of just the breastplate, yoroi would refer to a fully assembled set of armour not sure how accurate it is, since samurai armour changed drastically in design throughout the sengoku period.
My goodness, Billy! This video is amazing! Thank you 😊 It would be great of you could do more of these - I've been wondering about the wafuku in Japanese anime for years!
23:17: Yes, would very much appreciate a part 2 and listen to your opinion on action movies! Some movie directors are lazy enough to set up that "looks" okay-ish like you can tell it's a kimono -Memoir of a Geisha *cough* but they did go bold or accurate. So yeah, if you feel like doing another video, that would be so interesting!! Out of curiosity: what do kimono sensei think of kimono depiction in nowadays manga? I would be so curious to have you interview some colleagues of you and get their take on that. As always, well-documented video and highly appreciated!! Merci huhu
should you ever feel inclined to make more of these, i'd like to submit kusuriuri-san from the 2007 anime series mononoke (not to be confused with the ghibli movie), i think his outfit is a real treasure trove of different fun influences, and clearly designed with some amount of kimono competence (for example i read somewhere about ainu influences in the pattern and accessories)
Ichihara's kimono style reminded me of earlier Japan when even commoners wore obi ties in front and really loose, then mixing the Western styles in for the aesthetic of CLAMP
Halo Billy, great effort of explaining anime, my eye cote Temari ball on your desk, or mari balls maybe some time you can tell about this grate craft and history of temari balls. Thank you
If there ends up being a sequel video Id love see Zoro from the Wano arc of One Piece :D this video taught me he wears a uchikake, but his kimono is very interestingly shaped (it could just be artistic liberty, but it kind of flares out at the bottom like a hakama but its one solid piece) And Robin's geisha outfit from the same arc of the show
Since you mentioned cosplay, I have a question! My friend and I want to do a cosplay of a couple of ghost type Pokemon, but in kimono/yukata style (we've been referencing your videos!). We know kimono is supposed to be worn left-over-right, but since we're cosplaying ghosts, we thought it would be fun to wear it right-over-left (for the dead) instead. That wouldn't be horribly offensive or anything, right?
