In this video, I go over a tutorial suggestion about making WIDE BASSLINES that maintain mono compatibility. What this means is that the bassline will retain power in both stereo and mono. The issue with utilizing widening tricks like HAAS is that your mono compatibility gets destroyed, and the basslines sound combed when heard in mono. To prevent this, you have to create organic width as I like to call this utilizing Panning. I think it's a bit overkill to be precise with mono compatibility nowadays as most people hear their music in headphones. The only time you will listen to the basslines bad mono compatibility is if the track is played in a mono system... My phone has Dolby surround now... I'm sure the clubs will eventually have something similar.... at least, stereo!
I'm sure overtime having mono-compatible basslines will become obsolete, but, for now, we will go over how to create width without messing mono compatibility.

HOW TO ACHIEVE WIDE BASS 1. Utlize two presets that are similar but not the same wave table 2. Pan one hard left one hard right 3. Cut everything below 100 4. Add a third track, a deadicated sub bass below them *It works because the super sub will always sound like sine wave anyway HOW TO CHECK MONO COMPATABILLITY: PHASE CORRELATION: Grab ozone Imager. If you are up at +1 you have percect mono compatabillity.

...however a lot of live engineers for clubs do have to mix in mono. and you can forget about a stereo image at a festival.

is your return on pre or past? i would remove the delay and use it only to mid channel/s,., return setting it on pre fx

yo, some dude gave me this trick! Instead of setting a normal eq after your synth, to prevent phase issues, you should use a mid/side eq and just cut the lows from the sides, until you are on +1. So you don`t delete your mono lows, which are rly important and need their fullyness i think. but correct my pls if i`m wrong. we`re all here to learn smth :) peace Spif!

Have you considered using Mid/Side EQ features in Ableton's EQ 8? That might equate to a single track solution that'd help clean up the workspace a bit. It also lets you retain the upper register in the center. I'd be interested to see how that looks on Imager though - I do it out of habit but haven't 100% confirmed mono compatibility. It may or may not bleed between L/R and center a bit but I wouldn't think that'd be an issue.

yeah, M/S processing (compression and EQ) should have been the first thing addressed but there was no mention. seriously, how does this person just gloss over the underlying fundamental of their whole topic?

POLYVERSE WIDER is 100% mono-compatible once you sum the signal to Mono! It utilizes comb-filtering to achieve stereo width.

Don't forget that there are many Bose, JBL, Amazon Echo speakers that are super popular that are in mono. Lots of people listening to your music on Spotify/A Music for the first time are on these devices and important to sound good for the first impression.

Hey zen, would you recommend putting any processing on the mono sub layer to give it some stereo presence (such as an echo in a return track) in addition to the processing done on the top bass layers, or would that create issues in the mix?

i feel like i get cleaner mixes when i low cut the top layer higher around 160hz to 250hz, and removing the low cut when it isn't hitting with the sub during fills.

Nice :D i have started experimenting with stereo bass a month ago. Maybe i can add something that works well for my kind of sound. delay the seperated audio cfhannels (R/L), each one different, to avoid inversion. Routing Serums audio signal to other audio channels instead of duplicating the whole plugin saves cpu.i

u cannot pan the same snare/clap left & right it will still sound mono man wth u talking about? panning Left and Right only works with synths creating sounds (slightly different)

You have to do a follow up on this, It's a bit underwhelming and I expected more. More plugins, layering etc etc.

I think it's all in there. Bottom line is to keep your bass frequencies mono to avoid phase cancellation and concentrate on widening the top end of your bassline. For a clean mono low part you can use a plain sine, triangle wave or filtered saw or square wave (as explained in the vid). For the top part layer this with another bassline where you filter away the low end and go freaky with modulation and widening effects. Widening effects are e.g. Chorus, Delay and Reverb. You can achieve the same even without layering and fancy third party plugins :)

Apologies if this is a dumb question but when you pan the two basses hard left and right, should i make sure these two are in mono ? or are these stereo tracks just panned left and right ?

If you're planning them left and right they cant be in mono because they're already panned

Just to clarify, what i meant by this is should i convert the two bass tracks to mono (if they are in stereo to begin with) and then pan them left and right? Or does it not matter if you pan them if they are both in stereo? Hope that makes sense haha. Apologies my explanation could of been worded better the first time.

@@ryancoulburn so stereo is created by is the difference between the left and right signal. Eg, time delay, pitch, panning, processing like saturation create a difference. To help you better understand this U can use utility to select either the left or right side, when you do this you will notice it will get the left or right side and just duplicate the side you selected and put it on both left and right side, making it mono. You will notice you peak meter is now identical on both sides. If you press the mono button on utility on a stereo sound it will "sum them together by narrowing the stereo image. This can cause phase cancellation depending on how mono compatible the stereo image is to begin with. pyramind.com/three-ableton-mixing-tips-mono-sub-bass-bus-compression-will-marshall/.

Well, it‘s not just about hipsters. If your tune gets played in a club, chances are that the sound system is mono. Would be a shame if the tune collapsed in itself. Always check for mono compatibility!

OR... spare yourself the headache, take that single preset, apply actual m/s processing to it properly (which is what this dude is essentially trying to emulate without realizing it) and achieve the same goal with better results and far less effort... without altering the sound you were originally going for...
