I like to write blurbs for myself while drafting to get motivated to write, since the blurb teases how much potential there is in the story and how awesome it could become. But maybe that just works for discovery writers like myself 😅 Real blurbs are however quite intimidating.

That is some spooky synchronicity. I was rewriting a blurb, took a break to hit RU-vid and saw your video. Great suggestions! Thanks for taking the time to offer your expertise.

Good tip about being honest. No point in tempting readers who won't like it and give you a one-star review. Letting the prospective reader know what the genre/sub-genre is is vital. Conflict/tension: crucial to get it over. Useful video.

I stumbled upon this post from two years ago--hopefully, you can still shed some light for me. In your tips for writing blurbs, you advised that we avoid ending with a random, open-ended question. However, almost every book blurb I read--indie and trad pubbed alike--end in a question. I was given the suggestion of not ending in a yes/no question, but rather a question that requires the reader to, well, read the book (usually by asking "how..."). But again, most of the blurb questions I see end in yes/no questions! So what's the deal? I met with my local writer's group just yesterday, and we had this conversation b/c I shared my WIP back-cover blurb with them. I ended with a statement, and at least two women (there were eight of us) wanted me to end with a question, instead. Both are voracious readers, as well as pre-pubbed writers. So, I'm conflicted and confused, because while I am told by those in the writing industry to avoid ending with questions, I see at least 90% of blurbs ending in just that, and 90% of those being yes/no questions. Thoughts on this discrepancy? Thanks!

Super helpful as always! Do you have any tips on writing blurbs for poetry books? I'm already pretty weak with blurbs but trying to write one for a poetry book feels like a totally different beast. A lot of what I've seen is either a poem from the book or an amorphous overview of the theme of the poems.

I'm working on a book and I'm excited. But nervous since it's my first book I'm looking to publish and I notice it's not as "many pages" as other books. I feel like it's take me so long [year] to just get through it. As well as if possible, can you share some lovely tips on how to focus on writing. Distractions are easy to happen and I find it a bit hard to prioritize and actually put more then 2 hours into writing Love ur channel, subscribe 😇

hey, I had a general doubt, loved your video though:) There are many types of literary conflicts in a story, one of them is man vs author. could you explain me this conflict in brief.

Is it just me or is it super easy to write a blurb and be like heck yeah I’d read that book but other times you can’t find the words to describe the plot without giving away the entire story 😂
@Storytelling_mit_Anne-Sophie

Nowadays many give away like half the story, unfortunately. I once read a book, where only the last 100 pages of the 500+ page book where not already covered in the blurb. It felt sort of betrayed ...

Hi, Natalia. I am writing a fantasy novel with a large cast and each chapter will be the characters name. I had chapter 1 start with the main protagonist but I feel the story would be better if I start chapter 1 with the antagonist instead as it sets the theme for the overall book. What are your professional thoughts on starting with the antagonist and then introduce the protagonist in chspter 2 instead?
@SysterYster
@SysterYster 2 года назад
Why not? I do that in one of mine, and I think it really sets the tone for the book. Just make it obvious it's the antagonist, I guess? (My nonprofessional tips. :D)

Do your characters have to get what they want? My characters are both apart of difficult home lives and want to be accepted and part of nice and loving ones but don't succeed. How would I work that into a book blurb?

Would I need a blurb for a non-fiction? If I have a excellent description then blurb is superfluous. AS well My title and subtitle are very descriptive. Thanks

If your book is about a villain, do you reveal that in the blurb or keep it a secret? I kinda wanna do both, but I don't know if keeping it secret is a good idea, since people might get upset when they realize it. :P Halp!

@@kit888 It's kinda late in the story that it becomes obvious. And that's why I'm afraid it'll put people off. XD Though he does get progressively worse throughout the story, but so far, people don't seem to notice it. They just stick on his side. Which is kinda fun, but also a bit weird. XD
