I'm not just gay. I don't want to be summed up as gay. I'm me, and I don't want my identity to be nullified.

Thank you so much. Im a 25yo white male whos applying to grad schools for psychology and this part of applications has been stumping me as i dont feel like im diverse. I realize the question is more about understanding now and i couldn't stop thinking about how im going to write my statement as i was watching.

Hi! I'm planning on applying to UW, and for the diversity question I want to emphasize how my culture heavily influenced the way I see life, and how I have a different mindset than others because of it- but I'm having trouble finding a good idea on how I can add to the diversity, it's hard for me to put it in words.

The fact that kids have to write these statements to be considered at certain colleges is so sad - the divisive indoctrination starts right away.

I don't know how my son addressed this question, or if it even came up. The fact that he was a white kid in an failing city school district probably was an overall plus for him. We stayed in the city school district for a reason. We felt it was more important that he be exposed to a variety of cultures and economic diversity as well. He had an incredibly diverse group of friends, and I know he found ways to write about them, mostly in the clubs he encouraged them to join with him. He got friends to join chess club and win the HS regionals, another friend to who as a sophomore wasn't thinking of college, to join math club and is now a first year away Carnegie Mellon. I also prepped him for the possibility that he might not get into one physics program or another because the school may be working hard to diversify their STEM majors. Things worked out just fine for him in the end getting waitlisted at CM, but getting into his dream school. It's quite a process, and I don't fault any school for bumping a qualified white kid for a qualified minority kid in order to provide opportunities where they've been so lacking. There are plenty of seats at colleges, you will end up in a great situation, so don't worry if you don't get into this school or that school.

Given that even mid tier colleges in US have lot more resources and opportunities than many countries in the world, it def can't go wrong as long as the students work with a good plan (and focusing on networking and building employable skills)
