This was really useful for a beginner drummer. Sometimes I felt a song was in 4/4 but the snare and kick pattern was so weirdly displaced that I thought it must be in a different time signature. This explains it simply. Turkey dinosaurs? Yep.
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock 5 лет назад
Haha! You could notate it as 1/8 5/8 2/8 for example, but that would look silly. I think the main idea behind compounding time signatures is so it's easier to read on a score.

Thank you ! This was Amazing lesson! I’ve always struggled with keeping track of where I am in a measure. I’m never sure how to count it when I come up with ideas. Do you teach on Skype?

Too add a bit of clarity: Meter and time signatures refer to the same concept, but they are used slightly differently. Meter is the property of music that it is based on an underlying, repeating beat rhythm, whereas time signatures are the symbols we use to identify and describe the meter in a piece of music.

It’s crazy how I’ve done these tricks while writing some riffs of mine but never really knew how to explain it. I love having this well explained way to define it in my head for future compositions. Can’t wait to watch more of your vids!

A simple use of illustrations and images makes so much of a difference in these types of videos. So far, this channel is easily the most useful for things like this and chord variations for people like myself who have miniscule theory knowledge. Much appreciated, friend.

great video, just a little tip, for me is a little bit harder to think the eighth notes as 1,2,3,4,5... you have to count too fast. i prefer to think 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 AND, i know the velocity still the same, but i dont know, it is way easier for me
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock 5 лет назад
Hey Pedro. For sure, that's how I usually count but I thought as an introduction it may be easier to count to 8 as some of the changes are on the & of beats. Thanks.

Thanks! You're absolutely right. I just have to keep practicing with metronome. I'm almost up to 60bpm for chord change from C9 to F9. It's crazy how I can do 100bpm from C to G just from years of playing. I feel like i'm learning for the first time again hah.

If you are breaking up 4/4 into eighth notes to play with the rhythm, if i was trying to practice this in 7/8, would it still function the same (would you still use eighth notes as a base, or would you break it up into groupings of sixteenths at that point?). Thank u Steve ur an angel!
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock 5 лет назад
Thanks for the question. It would still be eight notes in 7/8 but of course you can also group in sixteenth notes. What is essential is making it obvious how the grouping are broken up: i.e where the accents are (the strong beats). This is what is meant by meter, a repeating pattern of stress; a mixture of strong and weak beats. For example in the examples I gave I'm emphasizing the stress by playing a chord on those beats and using the count to know where the stresses are. I put an arrow under the stresses in the examples. Hope that helps!

everything makes much more sense now, most youtube videos teaches compound meter and time signature as being the same thing so would it be ok to say that, coumpound meter is when you subdivide a bar in smaller and independent "meters within a meter"?, and each subgroup receiving its own accent? unlike the typical 4/4 where only 2 beats have the accent this is game changing, i was stuck in my theory study and had so much trouble understanding rhythm

those are some clean chord changes. any recommended practice method?
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock
@LetsTalkAboutMathRock 5 лет назад
Nice. Thanks. I'd say just practice them slower at first and build up speed as you feel comfortable. Make sure you warm up first. I'm also plucking all the strings of the chord at the same time which helps make it sound cleaner vs strumming them.

Hi Steve So I heard a song that has an 8 beat meter but it was sub-divvied as 123 123 12 (3/4 + 3/4 + 2/4) Is that considered a compound meter or a compound time signature? thanks
@hellishlycute
@hellishlycute 3 года назад
it might be consindered a compound meter but 123 123 12 is so common that its not something unusal
