How useful are Video Game Box Protectors?

This video discusses the chemistry of video game box protectors and plastic game cases. Usually video games are covered by PVC aka as shrink wrap. Although it is weak, the plastic can still protect video games from most damage. PET game protectors are great for maintaining the structural integrity of your game collection but not too much ease and they produce a lot of waste.

Did you get a case for Panzer Dragoon Saga to protect it from being damaged? I ask because I suppose the standard thin plastic protectors wouldn't mitigate fall damage.

A good bit of information here! I think one aspect that is missed here is protecting games from scuffs/scrapes. I pretty much put things that get used (like expensive cartridge games) in a plastic protector when I'm not using them. This makes them nice to display, and people can browse through my shelf without me worrying about the labels getting any unneeded wear and tear. But I pretty much only do this for stuff that's either very rare, or cost me more money than I'd want to spend to replace it.

the nice thing about plastic cases is they protect jewel cases (PC Engine Super CD, Mega CD, Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast) from scratches, and you can open them and play the game, and put them back and still protect the game case from scratches

I have nagging game collection issue that I'd love to ask someone with a background in chemistry. Over time, if found that a lot of the artwork for my games which were initially a bright white, have turned a dingy, dull, almost yellowish hue. This especially impacts for example, Nintendo Wii game artwork, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS5 and just anything with a white template. The issue seems to be actually getting worse, as PS5 games which I've purchased only months ago are starting to present with this. This also impacts the LCD screens of my handheld consoles, turning them yellow from the corners (the adhesive in them begins to break down and change over time). There is no smoking, no direct sunlight, and no uncomfortable temperatures that my stuff is being exposed to. I've suspected humidity issues, but not sure if it's too much humidity, too little, or a combination of both over the changing seasons. In the winter I run a gas fireplace that blows hot air through the house, in the summer the climate outside is quite humid. I'd like to find a solution for keeping my stuff from turning yellow, but first is identifying exactly what the wrong conditions are that are causing this to happen. It's really frustrating. I bought another 3DS last fall, and it was perfect condition, now the screens are turning super yellow.
@Shnickerman

I think that the humidity could be an issue definitely or smoke particles, basically carbon from the fireplace

@vensakarakorwien5768
@vensakarakorwien5768 4 месяца назад
those light case protectors are used for specific cases: 1. to keep a rare case of the game in good condition. (for those standard plastic game cases or jewel cases, it it possible to find a suitable replacement, but if a game got a unique case, this is not possible). 2. to protect carton / paper parts of the packaging (this is of course just a mechanical protection). Some games have paper sleeves, that they are way more sensitive to the small friction damage than compared to your standard plastic cases. 3. to protect your steelbooks from mechanical damage. These can be really sensitive to any type of scratches and are of course unique for the specific game. Even if they are not water proof, they are also a decent dust protection (and that may be important again especially for the more sensitive parts. If you want to protect plastic cases or jewel cases, that already have a decent structure from small mechanical damage, something simple like sandwich bags will be more than ok.

@@Shnickerman ok i know this is not the best example, but you might have for example special hologram sticker on the original plastic case (sports games), which you cannot remove that easily. You might have a plastic case of a specific color that is different of the original color and is otherwise rare. Or the inside of the case is for 2 discs, which is maybe rare for that type of console. And of course, you might have a combination of 2 or 3 above. So all that will make a standard plastic case unique and hard to find a replacement case. So of course, then you want to preserve such case.

This video was really interesting especially when you mentioned about PET plastic being potentially toxic? I'd like to know more about this. Is it the more you have of these the more of a problem it is? Also, would laser cut acrylic be a better choice in terms of toxicity to the body? Thanks!!!
@Shnickerman
@Shnickerman 2 года назад
From my understanding it really depends on where it's manufactured because of impurities. I just wanted to mention it because I found it in my research. Acrylic would probably less toxic. The best way is to do your own research and draw your own conclusions! Thanks for watching

One pro for box protectors I think you overlook is that removing dust from a viewable library is much easier when using these uniform protectors which have smooth surfaces. Your evaluation in this video is meant for sealed games. The seams of sealed games are anything but uniform and smooth. Cleaning dust from their surface can be difficult even with soft tools like a toothbrush that can get in the nooks and crannies. If the bristles are too hard or too much pressure is applied, damage to the seal can result. For unsealed games with creases or frayed edges, damage can be incurred as well. Using these protectors makes games or whatever is being displayed a lot easier to keep clean and manipulate.
@Shnickerman
@Shnickerman 2 года назад
That's a good point although I feel like if dust is the main issue using a Swiffer or other electrostatic cleaner doesn't a much better job than a toothbrush

@@Shnickerman I love those things; however, I'm never sure when I'm supposed to throw them away. They seem to collect dust even after several shelf wipes. I assumed these were mainly used to protect from "shelf wear", no? Like the way you have your games stacked in the background will cause scratches every time you pull one out to play or look at it. You'll see this to a varying degree on every old game that isn't sealed still.

I get protectors for all my games, both standards and Special Edition/ Collector's Edition (if there're available protectors that fit certain CE I have), because they help prevent scratch/ external damage that can occur on the case over time everytime I move my games around. They are also very helpful in protecting blurays and DVDs that come with slipcover.

Most of these cases are advertised as 0.3mm thick. I have seen one seller (kollectorprotector) advertise theirs being 0.5mm thick as well as offering some UV protection. They don't explain that. I'm left to assume it's just the added thickness which makes the surface more opaque and possibly more UV resistant. As a chemist does that interpretation make sense and do you think the added 0.2mm, nearly doubling the original thickness actually adds to UV resistance?
@Shnickerman
@Shnickerman 2 года назад
I'm not an expert on UV but I would say no the extra thickness would not help too much. If the cases had polymer coatings on the surface then that's a different story

Personally i only use them for.... factory sealed games. Just to protect the seal itself actually. The seal is kinda thin, and rips easily when a little bit sharp object touches it. The boxprotector makes it just more secure. Other valuable items like boxed SNES games for instance i have in acrylic display cases... those are quite expensive but will keep te box in the best shape possible.

@@Shnickerman True, but it happend to me before i used them. Bumped it against the corner of a shelf and ripped the factory seal into pieces. Therefor i started to use them later on... i collect videogames, but only sealed. The boxprotectors cost me about 25 cents each, so not a lot of money to keep it all nicely factory sealed. :) Wouldn't call myself paranoid... just became wiser thru experienced. ;) And the SNES sealed games i keep in acrylic cases, are way more better protected. Since they are made from carton every little bump damages the package.

Insurance can't replace games, especially rare titles. Still have insurance to help cover the monetary loss. With that said, my game collection is a 3DO long Box collection and these damage and acquire shelfware very easily. They are made of cardboard and certainly need box protectors. Furthermore, you don't want to damage the shrink wrap either if the new and sealed game is worth more than the dollar you spend on a box protector, especially when damaged wrap will decrease the value of that game by far more than the dollar you would spend to protect it.
@Shnickerman
@Shnickerman 2 года назад
Yea that's why I said this video was more aimed at games with plastic cases. Certainly shrink wrap can get damaged but you need to ask the question if you're 100 % concerned with monetary value. I get your point about insurance not bringing your games back but the cases won't either
@TheJackelantern
@TheJackelantern 2 года назад
@@Shnickerman That depends..., it can save them from a drop or fall. It can save them getting crushed... Obviously within the limits of the case. Flooding? Well, I seal my most expensive and rare games, those would literally float. Not so much from fire however. Basically they do provide protection, but with obvious limitations. As for my comments on the shrink wrap, I am referring to sealed plastic games or any sealed game for that matter. You want to protect that to protect the value of your game, or whatever it is you are collecting. To protect my 3DO NIB consol it is wraped in a thin acid free plastic wrap film for which I sprayed with water repellent.. I have even tested rust-oleum 2X Ultra Cover on some game boxes. I sprayed the inside and outside and it has made them very water resistant. So if you spill your coffee, coke, or water on them they will probably survive unscathed.

@TheJackelantern
@TheJackelantern 2 года назад
@@Shnickerman LOL, I take protecting my collection very seriously :) You can protect a lot of game boxes with 1 can of that spray, so for me it is worth it. People have to becareful because you can't just use any old water protectant as some will actually cause damage or even make the artwork cloudy and lacking luster etc.. I did my testing on torn or very damaged boxes I got for dirt cheap. I am no chemist but I understand that anything you spray on these may potentially damage them. So far the best one I have tested has been the Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra spray. Though I strongly recommend people carefully clean their boxes before spraying them. This will make them very risistant in more humid climates :) So if you live in Florida, I highly recommend this treatment.
