How Ventile Cotton Really Works

Important: read this to understand the video! There is tree anoraks on the video, two of them (Sasta Peski and Sasta Taiga) made of Ventile 100% cotton fabric and one (Fjällräven Numbers Anorak Nr.8) made of waxed polyester cotton blend fabric.
Ventile is relatively waterproof fabric and this video should clarify why: Ventile is so tightly woven cotton that it swells when it gets wet and becomes like a hard shell. The anorak in the video which is made of polycotton gets wet - even it has wax blended in its cotton fibres - but it doesn't become waterproof.
This video is not here to show which brand is better but to demonstrate how tightly woven cotton fabrics work. There is other similar alternatives for ventile, for example Etaproof and they works as well.

Ventile fabric works that way. When it gets wet, it goes slightly stiff because the fibers expand locking the fabric so that more water doesn't pass through. This means that single layer ventile will feel slightly moist on the inside in heavy rain but will not really let the water through. Combine that with a suitable layer (merino wool for example) underneath and you'll be very cozy in the rain. Double layer ventile will be completely waterproof. Yet both of them breath superbly. Fjallraven stuff doesn't come anywhere close regarding overall performance. The only thing where they top ventile garments is price :-D Ventile garments aren't cheap either, no question about that, but for example Fjallraven Smock number one is ridiculously overpriced for what it is.

And the Greenland fabric isnt durable. Maybe once it was. I had the Skogsö which has the lite fabric. It has strong wear on the inner side of the sleeves where the arms rub against the torso. After just one year even little holes appear. It wasnt easy but FR took it back. Then I tried the "thicker" fabric with the Greenland jacket. After a while I realized slight surface damage on one spot. I couldnt imagine how this does happen, then I saw some green and brown scratches next to it. So I know it must be from a branch of a tree. Unbelievable. FR is not durable at all. Any cheap M65 army parker is thougher than their jackets.

@@Temporalplace The british invented the Ventile fabric during WW2, definitely not the soviets. In fact, soviets didn't invent all that much of anything. They copied German and other Western designs in a lot of cases: optics from WW2 Germany (spoils of war), the British Merlin engine for their jets during early Cold War. And so on...

cool vid thanks! So basically does that mean cotton is more absorbent than poly cotton fabric? looks like it would get quite heavy and stiff. Thanks again for sharing,

Woah, amazing immersive video. Worth mentioning that Ventile, especially double, when sodden will take a very very long time to dry out without heat, I mean days. So, you're on a long trek in rain and camping out, the Ventile wets out and you store it out of the rain in the tent vestibule or somewhere, next day it's still sodden and wet and heavy. Poly-cotton like Fjallraven's G1000 dries much more quickly. G1000 isn't intended to be waterproof, so actually it has a different function to Ventile. Personally, I prefer non-waterproof but windproof and tough cotton or poly-cotton and if it rains heavily, I put over or under it a Columbia Outdry jacket. Wool layering always, which is still the best. Cheers.
@Gieszkanne
@Gieszkanne Год назад
Yes G1000 dry very fast but also it isnt water proof at all so you also get wet underneath. Also its quite thin. It gets damaged easily. I had bad experience with it especially the lite version but the regular G1000 isnt much better.
@NJ-zi9lr
@NJ-zi9lr Год назад
@@Gieszkanne G1000 isn't suppose to be a waterproof fabric. It's a polycotton shell for conditions too cold for rain. But it's far tougher than other outdoor fabrics. Easy to repair and is quite fire resistant.

@@NJ-zi9lr "But it's far tougher than other outdoor fabrics." Thats the general claim. Not in my experience with two different jackets of FR. Its a flimsy fabric.

@Gieszkanne Год назад
@@NJ-zi9lr Just for the wind you can take other tight woven cotton or polycotton. It dont have to be Ventile and for sure not G1000. If FR would be just overpriced I could live with it. Not certain I understand your point of the "limp" Fjällräven waxed polyester cotton anorak. Fact that it was not frozen/hardened by the water treatment indicates it had absorbed no water unlike the Ventile products? Is this not good??

CactusBaboon Fjällräven g1000 got much more water in it than the tightly woven Ventile fabric, it was really heavy. Bought a Ventile Anorak made by Snugpack round 2005/06, went to Norway that summer, had hours of rain in Rondane. At that time I also wore a Ventile shirt underneath, so a double layer of Ventile. Man was I cold and soaked after a couple of hours, I was very unimpressed and very glad we stayed in a warm hut that night. And the stifness of the material after it got wet, very uncomfortable. Later I tried about everything to improve the waterrepellency to no avail. But it is very windproof, it does breath much better then any Gore or other material, it makes noise but not as much as most synthetics and it's still there and I still use it regularly, it almost seems indistructable. As with G1000 which it also very good but lighter and less waterresistant (hence the waxblock) you better treat it as a non waterproof but very windproof outerlayer (G1000 is not as windproof as Ventile is, read Ranulph Fiennes book Mind over matter). As long as you do not forget a simple waterproof for the worst rainy conditions it's a good reliable product, but don't mistake weatherproof for waterproof, you'll be dissapointed. But one more thing, last winter right after work when I wanted to jump on my bicycle, a thunderstorm went loose. I work in a shop and we sell these spray-on sillicon cannisters by the brand Atsco(?name right?). So I bought a bottle and immediately sprayed it on my old Ventile (I forgot my rainjacket this day, bad timing), put the anorak on at ones, it being wet from the sillicon stuff and I steppen outside into the storm. 50 minutes of hard wind and heavy rain and came home completely dry????? And even now month later it seems quite waterresistant but I stil bring the rainjacket...

Nice comment with good real content. I agree, Ventile is a good piece of weatherproof fabric which is extremely comfortable and even beautiful when used in right conditions. I do also have bad memories from Ventile clothing. I use often my Ventile gear but I carry also real waterproof synthetic outer layer in my backpack. I don’t like silicon but your experience of that spay is exciting!

You can't wear cotton directly to your body, only suitable as outer layer! A huge no go, which can be dangerous under harsh weather conditions, potentially leading to hypothermia. Woolen underwear, perhaps WoolNet is highly recommended!

Over 30 years of mostly Winter climbing in Scotland (wet cold, wet snow, wet air, wet ground, wet everything, except on the occasional wonderful cold, dry day) I have found Gore Tex XCR (Patagonia Ice 9 jacket) the best at keeping me as dry as one can be when sweating in the rain / snow. I have also used Buffalo salopettes (Pertex covered fibrepile, not waterproof but quick drying and very warm) - good but not for sitting on belays so ultimately not suitable as the outer layer. I also used Patagonia's own H2No (smock) for years and found it not very breathable but very durable. Have used Mountain Equipment climbing salopettes (waterproof and breathable, looks like Gore Tex on the inside but don't think it is) and found them excellent. I used them and the Ice 9 in Norway and the Alps in winter (lovely dry cold) and the alps in Summer well above the snowline and found them excellent. I just don't recognise what people are talking about when they say Gore Tex doesn't work in humid conditions. That said, I like the feel and drape of 'natural' fabrics and so have bought a Fjallraven anorak in G1000 for woodland walks in nothing worse than showery weather. Not had the chance to try it in the rain but wore it sledging on a cold, dry crisp day in the Eifel recently and loved it. However, no way would I go into the Scottish hills in winter in it - you need to stay dry or the cold will do for you. Horses for courses. PS: that Paramo stuff has it's fans - never tried it. PPS: the British Army, the German Army, the Belgian army and probably others issue 'Gore Tex' waterproofs (called MVP by the UK military) - I think that says something.

This video says it’s not judging jackets/materials but it’s rather misleading. Every fabric has advantages and disadvantages. Double ventile has better breathability than just about all waxed/membrane fabrics something like 98% transmission so it is more comfortable to wear and is perfect for most walking conditions. Waxed and membrane fabrics get hot and sweaty very quickly unlike ventile. Ventile is also completely wind proof. When new the fabric does OK in most rain conditions and in light rain and showers it performs very well as it actually drys out but remains breathable during a walk. It’s not good in conditions of heavy rain in this situation it’s best to immediacy cover with a lightweight water proof. As I spend the vast majority of my time not walking in heavy rain it’s the perfect material for me.

Sasta peski anorak is the worst jacket I've ever tried. I have done 3 mountain hikes with the jacket at altitudes above 1000m, mostly in rainy weather. All it takes is a light rain and after ten minutes your shoulders are soaked under the backpack straps, then your whole back is soaked, and if it rains for more than three hours you will be soaked completely. My only luck was that my destination was a mountain hut where I could dry everything overnight. If I had planned on bivouacking, it probably would have been life threatening. The funny thing is, my friend with a jacket at a third of the price got much better results. The Peski anorak is suitable at most as a windbreaker, but certainly not for rainy weather. It will provide more function perhaps if you are hiking with a shopping bag in hand. Don't spend €550 on this crap!
