How Video Games are Turning into Movies

The only type of video games non-gamers can start to get into are the ones that have hyper-realistic graphics. And then they realize they aren't playing a movie and the disappointment begins to set in.

Not really. One of the great failings of that game was the dead expressions of the character's faces during dialogue. A purely graphical failure that greatly lessened the realism of the game. Mass Effect 2 looked more realistic by comparison.

@NJ-wb1cz
@NJ-wb1cz 6 лет назад
Brian Cain, what are these "masses" you speak of? There are tonnes of examples of completely failed games with gorgeous graphics, and tonnes of examples of games with shit graphics being very successful. This is even less valid than judging all movies by the amount of CGI. No one does that because that's freaking retarded, though depending on the genre and the movie itself good CGI might contribute to movie's success. Games are actually less dependent on visuals compared to movies, because they can also shine through gameplay, which is completely orthogonal to graphics. And the movies simply don't have that opportunity.

They get A+ for effort, F- for substance. Grim Fandango had 3D forced on it by execs to make a flashy pretty game. The entire art direction was based on a desire to have cool looking game with all the latest technical bells and whistles. Oh, and they completely ruined PC experience inserting awfully awkward and inefficient console-like control scheme, diching old point and click system to please casual non-gamers.

if story and graphics are so important why is tetris still exactly as engaging as it was when i was 6, whereas the only games which have held my attention in the past decade are minecraft, kerbal, and competitive multiplayer - it's because game mechanics are what make video games games. everything else is frosting. a game with great mechanics doesn't need any story at all, and a game with shitty mechanics will not be saved by some visually stunning narrative. games are to be played, not watched

Karl Petrosky Video games are just a medium. Story is important in games that set out to tell a story. You can not compare Minecraft to Uncharted or Tetris to The Last of Us because they are made to achieve completely different things.

Good points, but I dunno, man. People love cuphead because it looks old style. People like it when old things are done in a new way. Besides, you have to be somewhat stylistic and original looking, not just realistic. There's loads of shooters with fantastic graphics but really boring-looking protagonists, so you don't remember them at all. Meanwhile, you recognise Aloy because of her unique design, you recognise Cuphead, you recognise Bendy, even if you don't play any of those games, and it's because of the style and the design.
@vintis88

Yeah, novels certainly would suck if it weren't for their hi-tech graphics. It's also why the Emoji movie is inherently superior to the combined works of Dostojevski, Orwell, Austin, Hemingway, etc. (jk)

vintis4kodos novels ARE a better version of the episodic stories which preceded them. In fact, Don Quixote is the self-aware proto-novel that sits astride that metamorphosis, winking at the audience because it screws with us in how invested we get. Increasing realism is why many people have a visceral attraction to the Renaissance masters' paintings, but not much of postmodern visual art.
@chappiedatass1361
@chappiedatass1361 6 лет назад
vintis4kodos novels are technically a visual medium but only because you're reading it. You could listen to an audio book and get the same experience without visuals. A true visual art requires the use of your eyes to really experience it.
@vipatron
@vipatron 6 лет назад
Drew that makes little sense. To classify both of your examples as literary arts makes more sense. I haven't googled it, but I can bet that if you type that phrase + "program" into the search box, you would get many university programs. A word is not the typography you use to represent it, nor is it the sound that represents it.

Regular people like good graphics because they don't care about actually playing the game. They would just rather have the story given to them in a well-presented package. By actually playing a game you get a much deeper understanding for characters because you took part in the experiences that defined them.

Would argue that in most visual art, realism only holds true to the point where we master it. Once that's accomplished, art certainly doesn't stop, we simply use it to begin exploring more stabilization of the medium. Consider paintings. For much of early painting history the goal was effectively them trying to most accurately depict the subjects they were trying to portray. There were some interesting divergences. (Egyptian hieroglyphic paintings were made with the ideal of depicting the most ideal parts of the body at once for instance.) But once we hit the renaissance and early modern period, artists had figured out perspective, and pretty much anything could be accurately and realistically depicted by an artist who had learned the necessary techniques. From there, artists started to try and figure out how they could paint in a way that could encapsulate more than what they accurately saw, they realized that painting could be used to encapsulate intangible emotions that might not otherwise be apparent if you stuck to a faithful recreation of reality. It's why things like Abstract art exists now. I would argue that most other visual artistic mediums are still working towards perfect recreation of reality, but we're already seeing things that try for more stylized depictions. Animation is nearly as old as film-making, and I would argue that CGI is kind of in the middle of these two categories in the effort to accurately depict what is not actually possible. Video games are on a similar track, but while triple-A titles pursue the photorealism train, many are just following the same path that animation did by going for stylization concurrently with the goal of accuracy. I predict that at a certain point we may simply reach the peak wherein computer graphics may be indistinguishable from reality. At that point, we'll certainly still see photo-realistic games. (After all, portraiture and still life didn't die out once perspective was mastered) but more developers will consider dabbling outside of that aesthetic towards more abstract depictions.)

Actually the first movies were such impressive and exciting tales as "Workers come out from the factory" or "The arrival of the train to the station". In case you wonder: those were just clips of everyday life that people payed to watch. Not a "play turned into film". Also: the masks in the theaters weren't used as a sign that showed how the characters feel... those masks were as big as the actors' face... so the audience wouldn't see them if they could not see the expression by itself. It was "the role" they portrayed. They started to pull it on before the play PUBLICLY, showing that they start to "transform", they played their characters and after the play was over they pulled off the masks thus "coming back to the real world". The more you know.

Graphics aren't the most important in video games because they're games, interactive media. Graphics are more important in movies because the only thing you can do is look at and listen to a movie. With games you're supposed to interact with it. If you just stare at a video game for two hours, nothing's going to happen, and if a game has amazing graphics but awful gameplay it's going to be considered generally a bad game. Graphic novels and the like are different, however, because the only interactive thing is choosing dialogue and making decisions, so the graphics have to look good while you make those decisions and see how they play out.

I'm not arguing that it's bad or has no story, it's just that you can't really use it as an example that visuals don't matter, because this thing was built around visuals. I think a better example would be Braid, since it looked like crap...

It has good visuals yes but it is more artistic and less realistic than what is currently popular and strived for in the majority of games today.

Now that we have more Afterhours, can we have more escort missions? basically two of the three only worthwhile things to watch on Cracked

Based solely on the title of this video, I have to say that I think they should have put this out about thirteen years ago at the absolute latest. Seriously. Metal Gear Solid, StarFox, Ocarina of Time, BattleTanx, Hybrid Heaven...; these games all came out in the 1990s, and they were all basically interactive movies. By the time we entered the New Millennium, it was expected that a video game emulate movies, particularly with its cutscenes.

As someone who prioritizes gameplay, the n00b actually makes a pretty good point here. However, I think that because games involve the player using decisions and reactions graphics are far less important in games than they are in movies.

"Well, I mean, I can argue anything, but it would only be to defy you." My attitude in most arguments.
