Prepper Tip: If you are interested, look into buying a dehumidifier, connect its drain to a 55 gallon container (connected to larger containers if you wish), and then using solar power you can pull water right out of the air for free thereafter. Throw a filter inline somewhere and you'll have some pure drinking water as well.

Investigate just how much area "that little creek" is draining. They can become a raging river in just a few minutes in the right set of thunderstorms. Big sand bars and hollowed out holes in the turns in the creek are good evidence of that. One of those things that mountain people have to contend with.

We had a small creek behind our house, it was so tranquil UNTIL a Tropical storm rained down in upstate NY!! The raging waters eroded 20 ft wide by 400 ft long along the back of our yard. And when it comes time to repair the damage, BEWARE of the Dept. Of Evironmental Protection.....They wiIl come and tell you you cannot bring any equipment near the widened stream because you may disturb the "endangered snails", or the like.

Next time you go shopping, pick up a jar of "Organic unrefined virgin Coconut Oil" in the baking section. I use Walmart brand. Use it to repeal mosquitoes by spreading it all over your bodies. You will smell nice, and the bugs keep away. Just don't store this in your kitchen cupboards...grin. Keep it in the bathroom. Also, if you find a farmers market, you might be able to buy big clippings of Mint. Chop it up and sprinkle around your door, and other places where you sit, hang out. It helps keep the mosquitoes. If you can find a local garden center, or a road side stand, you might be able to buy the whole plant. Plant it everywhere around the front of the trailer.

I've seen a couple of people who are doing what you're doing and they're using the wood that they're clearing out to make wood chips and then putting that on the road. It has to be improved later with sand and gravel and various things, but that's at least a start. People are also using the wood chips just for little paths around the area. It's certainly a resource that you're going to have a ton of. I think you might find Tyler and Todd as a good resource to see how they built roads.

I'm thinking this will be your "forever" home site. So, all, and anything you spend on this place, be it equipment, drilling a Well, whatever will all be an investment in your future. Remember as someone has already suggested, be sure the cabin is well elevated, just in case you have rising water from that creek. You're both young and have a lifetime, to do it right. You don't punch a time clock every day, so take your time and enjoy your time building a life and a home.

I recommend you cut the trees and vegetation at least 3 feet in all directions to open up the road and allow it to dry out quicker. Then with most of the logs you can cut them into 7 foot lengths and stack them to dry for fire wood. As log as you manage your forest correctly you’ll have damn near an unlimited supply of fire wood

I did something similar with trash can water catchments. Myn has a removable lid so I flipped it upside down, drilled holes in the middle where standing water would catch, I glued pantie hose over the holes on both sides of the lid (inside and outside), and I placed a brick in the middle over the holes and pantie hose to hold the lid down on windier days. I haven’t had one problem with my lids moving or debris or bugs getting in to my water 👍🏽 You guys are pros so I’m sure you’ve got it all sorted 😁 Keep up the amazing work! A small 12v pump like what is on a garden tank spray would work great on that IBC tote. And, you could connect it through the valve at the bottom of the IBC tote. There's nothing wrong with drinking reason water. You mentioned using a filter, so that should remove all the trash. If you have a creek close enough, run a pump and water line from the creek with a filter. Mountain creek water is the best tasting water!

A spicket can be installed at the bottom of the water tank. The gravity and water weight provide a good deal of pressure until it gets low. (just an informational comment)

Exactly, as long as the opening of the water fill in the camper is lower than the water tote then that's the way to go. You just have to get the water up and over the edge of the tote and gravity will take over.

I love seeing the kids grow and it is such a blessing for them to get into nature the way they are. I am sure they are making memories that will last a lifetime. For the water situation, have you considered a ram pump in the creek and the tote further up the hill? Gravity could do all the work!

Hey guys, if you watch what the vanwives did for "power" at their place, it's a great idea for your place after you clear up the place, etc. If you do what they did, you guys won't have to pay for utilities. Nothing wrong with that and they grow their own food too.

I use a 12V RV pump but I don't fill my camper tank with it. I put a hose from the pump inlet into my tote and run the outlet to my city water connection. I just run a cable from the pump into my service access where I installed a power outlet. It also makes winterizing that much easier. I have plans to pipe the pump into the bottom outlet of the container but it works OK as-is.

The creek offers the potential of creating a hydropower source. If you are able to damn up an area you can then build a simple water mill that will spin and create electricity. A basic washer machine only needs 110. I connected a pump to an IBC tote to draw water into a pressure tank. That tank fed the water into a micron filter and a UV filter. The clean water is stored in 55-gallon barrels. They also make a countertop filter called Burkee that you dump water into and it comes out potable. The pressurized water is easily diverted into use by a porch-mounted washing machine. The water drains out into the garden. The soap used is designed for this purpose. Who needs a dryer when you can line dry for free and a lot faster. They also do make a washer and dryer combo that is all one unit.

Yes, I do hope the dogs are treated with anti tick medicine and Lymes disease. The kids also need to be sprayed down and checked very carefully. This is another reason to have a large break from the wooded areas when you build your permanent home.

As for the trash can I recently seen where someone took one of the trash cans that has a rounded lid cut a hole in it and turn it upside down. They taped a piece of fine mesh wire to the underside and when it rained the lid would catch water all the time as well as keeping out leaves and bugs that way. Those babies are so sweet and are growing like water weeds. I don't thing I remember you saying where you are geographical, but it is beautiful. What an opportunity to teach your children about all the nature surrounding you. Hope you are where there is some pawpaw trees. The fruit from them remind you of a banana.
