I've used canister filters for over 30 years. I settled on the fluvals, but those new sicce filters in this video look really nice and easy also. Canisters get a bad rap as hard to clean but that is just not true. Technically they are a form of sump filtration, self contained and extremely efficient. And the newer ones are virtually silent. Great video, thank you John and Lisa for sharing with us as always.

I agree. I run a fluval 407 on one of my tanks and it’s maybe 15 minutes of maintenance once a month

I’ve only used basic small aquarium filters (undergravel, sponge, and a cartridge) and had stayed away from large tanks because these canister filters seemed completely intimidating. Thanks to the both of you for showing me they’re not as ‘scary’ as I thought!

Amanda, I have been in the Aquarium Hobby for a very long time. None of my tanks are over 20 gallons. The filters I have had the best success with are HOB filters, like the Marineland Emperor 400, (though, I do not go that high on a 20 gallon tank). These filters have an advantage in that one does not have to worry about build-up of debris after a few years under an undergravel filter, (though the water is very clear w these). I currently have a 20 gallon w a API 180 GPH, and a Penguin 75, (these use a “Bio-Filter” like that Emperor 400, and a Sponge Filter connected to a double output Whisper 60. The other 20 Gallon I am using an older Marineland Eclipse 2 Hood, (has a Bio-Filter, a septic-like system, modified light, 200 GPH), w the other sponge filter. I have a lot of filtration in these aquariums, for a higher fish load.

Canister filters are the best for keeping tanks cleaner and I used them for a long time most are easy to clean. They where my favorite. Love the discus tank!!!!

Lmao and John, take it easy on her, you guys fight like a married couple haha. That's ok me and my husband squabble like that. The leaves in the tank are beautiful I love the scape in the discus tank. I'm loving the videos. I have 5 aquariums and 3 have canisters. I haven't used the sicce but I'll check them out. I'm currently using 3 fluval canisters and the sicce ones look like they have simpler guts than the fluval. That means the sicce are easier to take apart and put together on the inside. I cut my hoses down the middle and adjust accordingly. My biggest canister is an fx6 on the 125 gallon I have. I clean all my canisters myself but I get my husband to lift them for me due to health issues and injury to my wrists. No matter the state of my health I'll always have aquariums. Keep up the good work guys I'll always be watching your videos for years to come. ❤️

Team kg tropicals loved the video guys so funny but remember it's all about teamwork helping each other out I used to run on my 55 a canister filter but I found it to be too much work pulling it out all the time to clean it when you start it back up makes the tank all hazy you to a couple of hang on The backs much easier replacing the cartridges every couple weeks when they get dirty anyway guys keep up the great work I guess to each his own it's all the learning experience see you on the next one

My ocd went nuts when she spilled that water on the floor and didn't stop to clean it up.. My wife is very messy when it comes to cleaning the tanks and I can't stand it.. I have to wipe the glass every time water splashes on during cleaning. Lol. I do agree on the fact all the baskets come out as 1 unit with the filter the wife put together.. Big fan of canister filters and HOB filters. Word of advice get rid of the "Scrubber pad". Just go with media and a sponge. My maintenance on a 75 with a canister is maybe once a year, maybe.

The comments about what cats do🤣I have no idea how it happened but last week mine disconnected a hose from my canister filter which emptied my 30 gal onto the floor, through the ceiling and onto the basement floor. I only realized hours later. Found my fish in about 4" of water😫 everyone survived!! 😼

Once they develope a Tidal 9000, all other filters will be obsolete. LOL If there is room under the aquarium cabinet, I prefer to place the canister into a 20 gallon high tank. That's how much I trust them not to leak. At least I get a warning b4 the cabinet gets soaked.

johns commentary and edits made me laugh. but this video kinda explains why I don't like canister filters, you can have problems and struggle to set them up unlike a sponge filter, you just attach the airline and throw it in the tank.

Lisa the discus tank looks great!! Are you worried about any detritus getting caught under the leaves and the leaves degrading to make more detritus? I haven’t used much leaf litter because I’ve been worried about those things, but I like the look of it! Will watch for updates! So nice you can collect the leaf litter yourself.

Bleh…. Bought a botanical pack from Aquatic Arts & one type of leaf is deteriorating so badly, but I tossed THAT packaging too & don’t know what leaf NOT to buy next! Otherwise, I love the look & the crayfish do too.

I boiled them for about an hour but then soaked them in a bucket of water for 3 days before adding to the tank.
