We continue fixing up the mega rare Diplomat we bought last month, fitting cruise control, assessing the air con and lots more! It goes on a trip to Milton Keynes on its first long run.
The Diplomat is becoming a real mile muncher, I’m looking forward to seeing your restoration of this car as it progresses, I enjoyed the road trip, and seeing the trucks, thank you for taking us along for the ride Dougie😊.
Cruise control..the next must have for our cav now😅 air con ..dont think I've ever been in a cav with one thats work ! A worth while upgrade Keep up the good work pal
Great watch nice solid hour of jobs on the Cav. I hope you can get her fully resprayed. Love the dark dash. Better than the lighter ones. Look forward to seeing how she goes with the SRi cam fitted.
For an element of safety 😅 you should power the cruise control from the brake switch ignition supply. That way the brake pedal will always shut off cruise, regardless of whether the brake light fuse has blown.
Another interesting video, enjoyed it as usual! P.s. the little bit of cat action at the end of every upload just polishes off the entertainment nicely!
34:31..... Ah the Green Scirocco must be a paid-up member of the MLCC..... Middle Lane Cruising Club. Probably also sits there doing 65- 69.5 mph as well!!!!
Great vid as always. The cause of speakers deteriorating like that is just the type of foam that was used for the speaker surround. Lots of speakers used a similar foam and they all suffer from 'foam rot' like that. Sometimes you can find re foaming kits for them but in the case of the Cav speakers, you're probably best off putting aftermarket ones in. The ones from FAB will eventually do the same too.
it's entirely possible that the FAB ones have foam-rubber mixture surrounds that stay intact unlike the "fully foam" ones like the Diplomat ones. they would've sourced the speakers from multiple OEMs at the same time, hence the differences.
I had a mk2 1990 1.8 astra sri once from the mid 90's until 2004 and and when i took off the rocker cover to see baked on black carbon, i put some mobil 1 fully synthetic in, and it totally cleaned up the engine, and since the 1990's i always put mobil 1 fs in my car. Mobil 1 will do just as good job as the sea foam for your engine.
Great to see Cavalier [+Calibra] type jobs being done [expect it takes 3x longer to do jobs when recording for us]. speaker foam? bit like headlining foam layer---it disintegrates with heat & age.
Used seafoam on my mig when I stuck straw in the intake you put the pipe back on and it stopped the straw from spraying but it smoked like hell which is good as its breaking that carbon up
Every longish motorway journey I seem to overtake people multiple times because they seem to get bored and just slow right down - often in the middle lane. On a regular journey between the M5 and Abergavenny, I can overtake the same car ten times because I use cruise control on the M50 and A40 dual carriageway and use the outside lane on the roundabouts to overtake lorries etc and they don’t!
Another great video Scottie, you don't half cover some miles in you Vauxhall's. I think many people wouldn't consider doing those journeys in a 10 year old car never mind a 30 year old one. I can remember the the MK1 Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Ascona being released always loved those cars as a kid.
I know its a bit off point, but I have used "Revive Turbo Cleaner" on my Mum's 08 Golf 1.9tdi, when it developed the famous blocked turbo vanes. It fixed it and I have used it every year since and had no more problems. Worked well on an old Freelander td4 too. They do a petrol version but not tried that.
Great vid! I am glad to see it was nice and reliable and I hope things continue that way. I used to drive past the scania building on my way to work, I don't anymore because I find driving through mk pretty taxing, probably because I drive an allegro lol (need to get my vectra gsi back on the road) Some of the country roads round mk are wonderful though!
The number of Cavaliers I've seen scrapped through rust around the back suspension back in the day. The old 8 valve engine was great, I saw many 200k petrol still going strong and they were so cheap to run. The front brakes were weak but cheap to replace the clutch a doddle and the SRI were quite nifty for the time. If I could find a good rot free one I'd buy it in a heartbeat today, but they're pretty rare now
In ‘91 my dad had a choice of company cars. I remember going down to Walshes in Days Road Bristol to look at the 1.8 LS while I sat in a Diplomat and played with the pop up cassette storage. He went for a Renault 21 GTS 5 dr hatch in the end but I thought the Cav was the better choice.
51:00 It's interesting that the speakers have deteriorated like that. The passenger speaker on my 2015 Corsa had a hole in it when I took the door card off. I thought this was the cause of vibration noises when the radios blasting, but I'm convinced it must be the plastic trim. It's also interesting that the speaker in your Cavalier look the same as mine. I wonder if Vauxhall just used the speakers for decades
I think it's a case of them using multiple OEMs at the same time for the speakers, and some being made with *_surrounds_* (outer suspension rings) entirely made from foam which rot away from moisture, and others being made with *_surrounds_* made from a foam-rubber mixture which stay intact. and yes, factory car speakers are made very cheaply and haven't changed that much over the years.
They were repairing potholes in the middle lane just past tebay truckstop on tues/wed/thurs…. Absolute pain in the hoop, that should have been done during the night
Wow it's so much easier fitting cruise control to my 1999-2006 Corsa C haha Just plug a laptop into the OBD port with one of those 20 quid opcom usb things, and then setting cruise control to "enabled" in the ecu All that was left after that was fitting the actual stalk with the cruise button on it haha
50:55 speaker _surrounds_ (outer suspension rings) that are made entirely from foam are prone to rotting away from moisture. the speakers from FAB were probably made differently, with foam/rubber mixture _surrounds_ and therefore haven't rotted. in case you ever need to, it's possible to _refoam_ speakers, using refoaming kits (for the right speaker size such as 5.25", 6" or 6.5") which consist of new _surrounds_ (rings), glue and a brush.
Looks like a good un Dougie, all set for a run with cruise control on board. Interesting that mob do headlinings, might call upon them to get mine done, be interesting to see the job they do on yours. By the way is your wiper mechanism goosed seen it hitting the open bonnet as you operated it, mines had a similar problem, spindles were worn out. Can't beat the 2 litre 8 valve, bulletproof engines those!
Great vid Dougie as always! I'd stick to what someone else said : make the Diplomat great then pay the old man a visit. I am still in touch with the lady I bought the Omega from. Her father passed away so the Omega was sat for a year and something. She went into tears when I sent her photos from the first classic car meetup I took the Omega to. P.S. Don't bother repairing old roof lining. The upolsterer showed me why - the adhesive used back in the day turns into a half-sticky orange dirt, you can't clean it properly without tearing the material so it will never get stuck back properly.
Long legged limo. Does the Seafoam dissolve all the sludge Or is it just floating about in the oil now or Lying in the sump ? Should you drop that oil ?
The mighty derek from Vice grip garage. goes through bottles of sea foam. for those big old thirsty v8 dodges. the guy goes through gallons of the stuff to open those piston rings 😂😂😂😂
The old cars were the best in my opinion as they were not so refined that the driving experience is dead , like in most new cars , the electric cars for example fast but boring to drive , no entertainment at all unless you have £100 grand for a model S Tesla
I don't find any Teslas interesting. There's not really many new cars that I find interesting at all. More and more are SUVs now, which are pointless, and they are only getting uglier.
@@ryanwilliams6526 Yeah I wouldn’t swap my 2007 Mitsubishi Colt for anything modern as it smokes most modern cars will do 85mph in 3rd gear , my friend who drives a Corsa 1.4 turbo from 2017 couldn’t keep up on the motorway around town he had me but I’ve got the legs 🦵 on a motorway lol and yeah electric cars are just not good and all are automatic so very boring , I like to have a stick shift so I am in control of my pony 🦄 lol
What I find hilarious about the fast Tesla’s is yes they are stupidly fast but the owners spend most their time at 69MPH in the middle lane squeezing every last mile out of their reserve.
@@exgtt2061 Yeah there was a challenge on gears and gasoline between a model S and a tuned evo 8 to drive across the USA 🇺🇸 the Evo won as it didn’t have to waste 1 hour a time stopping to charge and the hilarious thing was the Evo beat the model S in a drag race lol 😂
I wouldn’t bother with tescos 99 momentum , I tried it in my vectra c 1.8 vvt exclusive , she hated it, she’s running a pipercross panel filter and stage 2 , 160 bhp and 144 ibft, the car ran with no enthusiasm at all, im always running shell vpower now, which is true 99 not like tescos which is only 95 with boosters in it..
Have tae laugh at you calling it "the diplomat". It reminded me of my mate used to hae a Escort he referred tae as "the ghia" as if that had some sort eh cache that wid hae burds dropping there skants 🤣
