How you *COULD* have been playing Ultima III in 1986...

Atari ST + Ultima III + MIDI + Yamaha FB-01 = Possibly the worst video I've ever posted! That, or "pretty cool stuff," as I repeat several times even, for your viewing benefit.
As mentioned in the video, here is the stereo recording of the FB-01 output:
www.symphoniae.com/misc/U3_FB0...
And here is a Standard MIDI File encapsulation of the FB-01 SysEx configuration demonstrated, but optimized for use with a single FB-01 unit: www.symphoniae.com/atari/U3ST0...

I owned Ultima III for the Atari 800XL and it was able to play both the music and sound effects at the same time.

Each of those tracks sound absolutely gorgeous out of the FB-01! Talk about a kick back to the past.

Amazing work. I first played Ultima III on an 800XL, what an amazing jump it was to the ST years later. Had no idea about the MIDI channel, thanks for sharing!

I created a Standard MIDI File encapsulation of the FB-01 SysEx configuration some time ago, but neglected to mention it here. Without further ado: www.symphoniae.com/atari/U3ST01.ZIP This has been optimized for use with just a single FB-01. Usage details are in the 'READ.ME' file.

Cool! I've owned an FB-01 for awhile now, but never had the opportunity to try it out because it's so limited (I just saw it mention having FM-synthesis on the front and knew I *had* to have it!). Lucky I also have a 1040ST and SC1224, and even the same SC-55mkII seen in the video! I've only ever played Ultima III on my Apple II with Phasor card (Mockingboard compatible), but I'll have to check this out on the ST!

Fantastic! I knew Ultima III supported MIDI as I got it playing MIDI using a SAM2195 a year or two back when I fitted the SAM2195 internally, but I didn't know there kit out there where you could assign different instruments for note ranges - very cool! the result you got there is fantastic! Subbed!

I forgot. Did you have a video showing how you installed that SAM2195 internally?

Quite a few games back then used midi, I remember in the 90s opening various games midi files in some windows programs to could change instruments. Was super fun to play around with

Sir, I wholeheartedly approve of your MIDI ventures. Nice arrangement.

Honestly surprised the Atari's version of the track sounds so close to the C64. In 2023 I occasionally play these songs in-game during Space Station 13, which is a game where you take on a job at a doomed space station overrun by traitors, cultists, and blobs, but which was originally released in 2003 and has had open source development for twenty full years. The result is one of the most feature-rich games of all time, including the ability to import MIDIs and play them on an in-game instrument!

WOW!! Really cool!! I had no idea Ultima III outputted MIDI on the Atari ST. What I'd really like to know is how you spent so much time outside and letting it pass that much as you were playing music and you DIDN'T get attacked LOL. No monsters walked up to you. We could've heard the battle music as you tried to fight them with your ONE character hehe :)

Pretty cool, I wish we could tag people in RU-vid comments-- Richard Garriott would probably like to see the second half of this video. Ultima III was my first role-playing game ever... I had the IBM PC version.

Nowadays the best way to Ultima 3 is the Fox Cunning mod for the NES port. Can even use the C64 soundtrack. Might not sound as good but it'll play better!

great video. It sounds really nice. Please could you dump the FB01 and make MID file with SYSEX which is possible to send to the Yamaha before starting the game?

I had a MIDI keyboard attached to my Atari ST mainly to listen to the Ultima music while working in my shop. I also had a MIDI keyboard attached to my PC for the DOS games. So, MIDI is nothing new, in fact, it has long since died.

As someone that doesn't understand music/midi/the hardware can you tell me what hardware I'd need to buy (besides midi cables) to play this with my ST? I'm fascinated!! Thank you :)

A single Roland Sound Canvas module (there is a software version if you have a midi interface on your PC) or he uses two Yamaha FB-01 modules because they were available at the time

My Sound Blaster cards in my Pentium II and my Pentium III PCs have MIDI built in. They have all 128 MIDI instruments on board.

I played the NES one, it is easier in the comparison to this version. It seems ULTIMA took away and incorporated jrpg ideas and systems.

Ultima III was big in Japan and profoundly influenced JRPGs, not the other way around.

The C64 version disappoints with its limited dynamics and complete lack of timbre variation. It could have been a lot better.
