Apple //e + Passport MIDI interface + Ultima V + Roland U-110 = A really, really long-winded video, but hopefully one with some cool music...
For the one or two of you (if that!) that would like to replicate the demonstrated playback, here is my U-110 SysEx configuration, encapsulated in Standard MIDI File format. Mind the READ.ME file for usage and further explanation.

Ultima V changed my entire childhood, and I loved every minute of gameplay. :) I placed a lot of homages to Garriott's work in my own series of books ("Diamond Dragons"). 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

Here's a bonus surprise! Although Ultima V funnels all its MIDI data into one channel during playback, the composer's original track assignments are hidden somewhere inside the event data. In the 90's I captured the MIDI data through a Roland SCC-1, separated the tracks back into their respective MIDI channels, and discovered hidden percussion and sfx in there too! I'll forever be upset that Origin never ported this to the Atari 8-bit. Only to the ST (a PC which cost $1000 at the time, or almost $3000 in current money and we could never afford that.) And now even though I own it on GOG to this day I still haven't played it.

Pretty cool... still, these days I'll take the IBM PC port installed onto a hard drive (no disk swapping) with the General MIDI patch. :-) Cheers.

In the late 90's, sometimes I used to have Ultima 3-5 MIDI music playing at a low volume on my computer at work. One time a co-worker came to my desk and said, "What is that reallllly depressing music you're listening to??"" LOL I was like "Depressing?? HUH?" ATTACK - EAST MIKE HIT! Okay, the last part didn't really happen.

I didn't have full midi but I did have a mockingboard C, and it was an amazing experience.

Well, this is certifiably badass. Have you tried the IBM PC version with the fan upgrade patch with the same MIDI setup? Kinda curious to see how accurate the mod is. I suppose the same question goes for the other two Ultima videos you've done.

Wow :3 This is so cool and I have the collection of ultima games on cd collection. Is there a sound patch for that version as well? I don't have a speaker set or set up like you, but I bet there's something that i could play the game and enhance the experience like you did. :D

Hey Cloud', it's Ari from the old Quest Studios message board. Great video! It still amazes me how good game music could sound back in the 80's and early 90's when the graphics were comparably much worse. :)

Yeah right... I own a U110 and a D110 (U220 as well) now... Lucky me... These two buggers in your rack cost over $2000 when they came out, not to mention the D550 which added up to more than the two 110 together... So the title should have been "How you could have been playing U5 back in 1988 when you already had a Ferrari and nothing else to spend your money on" :)

I now have a Roland JV-1080 and a Passport card as my Ultima V sound setup on my IIe. You are quite correct, these things were totally beyond my reach until 30 years later. But I do think it's amazing that Origin thought to include MIDI functionality for the game. Very forward thinking.

I always thought Ultima 6 was the first with midi support. I only had the C=64 versions. Up until Ultima 6.

Always been a fan of the Amiga 500 tune, in fact the only one I truly appreciate; It sounds like the intro to "One", by Metallica, released about the same time, which I find rather interesting. This, however, sounds amazing and I can but imagine having tried it with this music/setup first, back in the days.
