As far as backgrounds go, I disagree on rare=More Power. At one point I went through all the backgrounds, and the conclusion I came to for rare backgrounds was rare=nonstandard/lore dependent. There were I believe 2 out of ~30 that gave 3 ability boosts and several that gave only 1. In the case of 3 ability boosts, I believe there are 2 backgrounds where you get to choose 2 and the GM chooses the third and that's all you get. Assuming you use an ancestry that allows 3 boosts and a flaw. The best ability arrays you can start with are 18/16/16/12/10/8 or 18/16/14/14/10/8 or 18/14/14/14/12/8. Best case for this is for a MAD character and this will give a +1 to your weakest save. Worst case is that gm chooses the ability with your flaw and you don't start with -1 in your worst stat. If given the option of the 3 ability backgrounds, if I was starting at level 1, I'd probably still choose a normal background as a skill training, skill feat, and a lore skill are usually more useful early on. If we were starting a high level campaign at 11+, I'd prefer the ability boost if the gm was generous and gives the boost to a useful stat, otherwise I'd get more mileage out of a normal background.

Im playing in a 2e kindmaker on foundry and it is good not great but good. My only complaint is how leveling up the kingdom takes forever and while i enjoy the down time we have been level 2 though for roughly 6-8 4 hour session and i think were just halfway to level 3 and im questioning if i should ask my dm if we could change the requirement to level up so it is faster cause it is pretty slow leveling. For example, 1 resource point is 10 exp points per 1 level up you need 100 resource points for each turn my group aquires 4-7 a turn then sometimes 23 if were lucky pn trading goods. This is not including us needing resource points to building for our towns. Tldr Leveling up kindom in kingmaker 2e is much slower and takes a while for a single level up. I could never play kingdom turns in person it would be really hard to do. Possible but wouldn't recommend.

My hot take is that sentient animals is dumb and lacking in imagination. They will never be in a game I run. One reason I left D&D is because of all the animal-headed races they are churning out because they have so little ingenuity. I don't NEED a Battle Cat in my TTRPG's. Hell, even catfolk in my game are basically Thundercats, not Khajiit.
