I have the exact printer and have now tried 2 different off brands with no success despite positive reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. I just might buy a Color Laser by Brother. Had one before and had no problems ever while this one jams paper, scans poorly and now forces people to buy only their overpriced toner. Replacing all 4 toners is more than twice what I paid for the HP Pro MFP479fdw anyway. I'll just get another Brother and sell this not so old HP Color Laser to offset the toner I'll need to buy to sell it.

You can’t just set Cartridge Policy to OFF in the set up menu, or is that something else?

I couldn't get mine to work. Have had other laser all-in-ones by Brother and never had this problem. If I knew how expensive the mandatory HP toner was I'd never have bought the printer. HP obviously cares more about toner profits than helping the small business or personal customer afford to USE this.
