This time we talk about Lil Cal, recap his timeline, and consider his unsetting impact on all of Homestuck. I'll always maintain Lord English is a fantastic villain in his fulfillment of the Sauron-type felt-but-never-seen role, with Lil Cal serving as his One Ring. He's this looming, haunting oppressive presence that plays farce with people's lives. As an adult he never meets the children whose lives he's uprooted because he never needs nor wants to, and he feels very real and very frightening viewed through that context. The narrative trick of contextualizing the inscrutable motivations of adults by introducing their younger selves in a more personal, ground-level way continues to work beautifully with Caliborn, hilarious in his unabashed, brazen awfulness, while declaring the root of evil to be an ambitious child without friends, upbringing defined by rivalry and hate.

@@dewaunwarren1 I'm not sure there's any RU-vid videos of it since those mostly play blind and it's *extremely* obscure. If you play Charun Krojib's route (in Act 15) and turn off the user interface (H key) at some point when Charun is standing to the side of the screen, you can see L'il Cal in the background.

Yeah, I saw it! I'm wondering if it'll factor into Charun's arc at all, the fact that it exists there is so puzzling. Especially since Charun's title is "The Paradox", if I remember right?

It's something we have to deduce since it's never explicitly stated, but is almost definitely the case, as every item caught in Jack English's head-splosion (Gamzee, the crowbar, the Golden Cuestaff, and Yaldabaoth) all serruptitiously appear in Caliborn's session.

One of my favorite reads of the Cal twins is that they represent a dichotomy of authorship - They both literally write chapters of Homestuck. they both derive a lot of joy from their interactions with the main cast (ie the "characters"). Calliope idealizes them, wishes they were in her life, uses their adventures to imagine a better world for herself, and outside that only wants them to be prosperous and happy. Caliborn, on the other hand derives a perverse satisfaction from causing the most possible suffering by seeding every challenge and hardship they ever face. Caliborn wants to see his "characters" suffer, and in some cases (like with Jake English) does so to make them grow as people, even if only to cultivate greater conflict. Calliope writes for the joy of imagination and to imagine a better world. Caliborn writes to disparage his enemies, elevate his own beliefs, and obtain immortality. Through this metatextual reading I find neither approach to be "evil" or "good" but rather explorations of the realities of writing stories. Caliborn is evil for other reasons though, of course.

Not really. Caliborn was only making sure he himself became Lord English. The only reason Homestuck's timeline needs him to exist is because he went around making himself the cause of everything that ever happens. The Dancestors' story makes it pretty clear that the Alpha Timeline isn't there to guarantee universe reproduction or good outcomes, but only to make Caliborn's ascension to power inevitable. Doomed timelines are doomed solely because they don't lead to lord English. Lord English is only necessary because of Lord English.

He kinda does what wriska did but in reverse, vriska made back noir so she could have a villain to fight and be the hero of the story. Caliborn "made" honestuck, so he can be the villain of the story, he made all his opponents strong and great heroes so his victory over them would be even more impressive. Caliborn did everything in his power to make sure he is the greatest villain, and that was his downfall, he did too good of a job making his opponents strong

It's been awhile since I've been hugely into Homestuck, but I started rewatching the Let's Read recently, and one thing that really stuck out to me was Cal's demeanor in the doomed timeline where John skips to the 7th gate and dies. In the doomed timeline, Dave prototypes his sprite with Cal, and you see him being tormented as Cal laughs manically for painstaking minutes. This blew me away once I viewed it with knowledge of the rest of HS, and seemed to me to represent Caliborn/LE literally laughing in Dave(his favored adversary)'s face, as they have failed to propagate a timeline where LE comes to exist, and thus failed to kill him.

i think lil cal's timeline is best understood at the start of its existence in the alpha universe, not its "creation" in dave's dream tower via gamzee. Baby Dirk holds onto the lil cal with caliborn's soul inside of it. The scratch creates "two" versions of cal, and alpha Dirk's version was the empty one. We follow this one and it's empty at the moment. Dirk drops it at the bottom of the ocean and stays there until millions of years later, when Caliborn finds it and keeps it with him to eventually become a vessel for himself, half of gamzee, AR and Equius. The doll is thrown into the furthest ring by Roxy, and (this next part is my own theorization) Gamzee's chucklevoodoos dont create dream lil cal but rather teleport him into dave's dream tower. From this point, lil cal goes to the veil and meets up with dirk again. this time, the version of lil cal that has LE's soul inside is sent to Beta Earth as a continuation of the timeline. He grows up with it and is influenced by lil cal until his death. Jack Noir takes cal as a trophy, attacks an Aradiabot with it, and goes through a series of events that lead to Gamzee having the doll on the meteor. Gamzee then hands it to Jack in the Alpha kids session, and he gets possessed by LE's soul. This is the point where the timeline got fuzzy for me. If it were a stable time loop, where did the physical lil cal go? or is lil cal only a juju if it is being possessed by LE? did Jack English break lil cal with the crowbar while we weren't looking? is that why Gamzee sent him the crowbar along with lil cal? In that case, lil cal has no beginning but does have an end. which in a way, reflects caliborn himself.

There is one bit of this I would disagree with. AR and Equius do have an influence on the actions of lord English. When Dr. Scratch is first contacted by Terezi he is confused for a moment. He tells her about dark pockets in his perception. I would attribute this to the passive nature of Equius as the heir of void. I would say that by combining himself with Calsborn he put himself into a position to hide important things from Lord English. If any soul could linger in the background avoiding the threat of Calborn's soul it would be a void player's.

Also, Dr scratches personality is way more similar to dirks than caliborns, mixed with a bit of equius. Caliborn is very vulgar, brash, direct, doesn't think things through... Dr scratch is way more calculated, calm and a bit of a smart-ass, like ar, and he is also a snob, classy and carries him self with grace, and equius is obsessed with class, nobility and aristocracy. As for gamzee... Well gamzee likes to confuse ppl, play pranks and be annoying, and that's exactly what the doc does to the players, everyone who talks with him gets annoyed, something a rage player would do

First guardians cannot teleport into or out of separate time references, which is to say into or from universes. If that was the case, Jack Noir wouldn't be using the frog temple to escape the scratch. Doc wouldn't be able to do teleport cal into session A2 because besides his connections to cueballs and omniscience, he does not possess any powers that other FGs don't.

True, but it's entirely possible he might've teleported Lil Cal into Gamzee's vicinity before he entered, or something like that. It's hard to say exactly when or how the transfer took place, all I meant to point out was that Scratch is the only person with the motivation to give Gamzee access to Lil Cal, and the knowledge necessary to somehow put him there.

Random Data, the class of the chosing for Lord English are all royal member. A heir and a price. And if the bard is the counterpart of the prince, then the chosing of Gamzee makes sence. Also Dave shares aspect with Caliborn, probably the reason he chose him.

So... Here is the part I don't get about Lil'Cal : At which point is it empty ? Because if it already has LE's soul during the pre-scratch event and following Dirk on the meteor, why would there suddenly be one version without a soul in the post-scratch universe and one with one in the pre-scratch universe ? Also, I've found this channel not long ago after recently sstarting and finishing Homestuck (and Hiveswap) and trying to find more. You do really great and interesting stuff ! :D

@@justanotherbrickinthemachi6598 but if Post-scratch/Universe C Lil Cal has a soul too, that would mean three souls would be added every cycle it does which doesn't sound really great and would create different LEs with different amounts of souls inside them.

@@shadesofnier1 I don't know why B2 Cal is soulless (probably has something to do with the Scratch?, but I am pretty sure that B1 Cal is always the one that becomes LE since it is always the one given to Caliborn (while B2 Cal is lost at sea), and that one loses it's eyes (and by pRoxy, the souls contained within) when they are removed by B2 Jack Noir. So I don't think we need to be worried about an LE with infinite souls or anything like that. What we MIGHT have to worry about is Calsprite, because we know that Lil Cal is capable of surviving the Void, and logically, Calsprite would also be capable of doing this after getting caught in a doomed timeline, possibly even better since as a Sprite they would be more combat ready. They might even be able to fully harness Equius's void powers to escape the furthest ring if given enough time, of which Caliborn has a lot, or more likely, just escape with Gamzee's chucklevoodoo's again. Best case scenario: they got caught in *Lord English's Dastardly Double-Death Destruction Attack©;* worst case scenario: *THEY ARE ALREADY HERE.*

@@thisdraco4794 B2 Cal is soulless because when a juju is copied something *HAS* to be missing it's part of the nature of it being juju The B2 cal is dropped into the ocean taken by Caliborn Then has his soul, Arquiusprite, and half of Gamzees soul then it's banished to the void for Gamzee to take out and put into Daves room The B1 cal is the one that's given to *Lord Jack* since it's the one that Bec Noir took from Bro after killing him taken to the trolls universe and taken be Gamzee who gives it to *Lord Jack*

B2 Cal is empty because there can only ever be one of each Juju at a "time". What does that mean in regards to parallel timelines? Its relative - and in true Homestuck fashion I think the rules for Jujus are metafictional. When hussie says there can only be one juju at a time, he means there can only be one active juju at a time *from the reader's perspective*. As a reader, you naturally think of parallel timelines as being 'at the same time'. So one of the lil cals must be empty. Going by code logic, B1 resolves first from our perspective, so B1 gets the real lil cal.

Makes me wonder what about the Friendsim one. [SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED IT] Charun is shown having Lil Cal in his hive. Some say it could be an Easter Egg or just a fake, as it is not likely two Cals exist in Alternia as one currently on Earth. However, here is something to notice. Charun is a Derse Dreamer and a Rage Player. Derse Dreamers that made Lil Cal/LE are Equius and AR(since he is like Dirk and Dirk himself is a Derse Dreamer). While Rage player, he is in the same class as Gamzee. Charun and Calibon have an interest in art as well.

It's probably the same cal Jack Noir throws at aradiabot. Aradia finds the doll at the crash site in an escavation, so it may have been there for some time. Doc Scratch could arrange to have the doll returned to the crash site before Aradia discovers it.

I theorize it may have been a mental projection, similar how the real cal got created through Dave's dream consciousness materializing it. Dirk had a physical Lil Cal puppet too, so it's possible that his dream self subconsciously manifested it, or his dream self physically made one like a real puppet. Either way, I would imagine this version of Lil Cal isn't a JuJu one as I don't remember anything happening to Dirk's Dream Cal and Derse got destroyed in that universe, so that may have been the end of that Lil Cal.

i still dont understand how the souls inside lil'cal supposedly enter Doc Scratch on his end as he becomes LE. Does the ectocloning really copy the soul(s) of a subject? What happened to the souls when Dave cut off Union Jack's head after it exploded into another black hole(????)? I'm routinely drawn back to the Very end of MSPAReader: mental breakdown where Drunk Rose makes a startling realization concerning "uncles" aka "brothers" aka "siblings" aka "clones".

@@rumorcontrol7873 Ectocloning copies the data of the subject in lil cals case it was the amalgamation of souls, this is why things like the white cue ball can be ectocloned even though it does not contain genetic code, the white cue ball is referenced as a seed. that data is then overlayed with the base First Guardian genetic code and then doc scratch was made. The souls in Union Jack are destroyed because they are now apart of the juju and there can only be one of the same kind of juju, either one is destroyed or it becomes the other version.

I'm still uncertain whether or not the Earth that became Caliborn's planet was Alpha Earth or Earth C. If it was Alpha Earth, then why were there trolls (including the Canon Fantrolls) on that planet that Cherubdad destroyed? Shitty statues of liberty existed on both Earths, put there by different versions of Dave. If both the bunny and Lil' Cal making it to Caliborn's hands hinged on them being left on Alpha Earth, and that Calliope and Caliborn's home is at the top of the Troll's Meteor, then how was it that on Earth C the kids and trolls were able to find Rose's shoe on that meteor lab in the Credits, confirming it to be the Troll's Meteor? To me, it make more sense that Gamzee retrieved both dolls from Alpha Earth somehow before presenting them to Caliborn. It would also mean that some time before Earth C's sun turned into a red giant and the end of life on Earth C, its inhabitants were able to leave via space travel and form civilizations on other planets. Thus ensuring that aside from him being born there, the Earth C universe remained largely free of Lord English.

to my understanding, jade took alpha earth before the end, kept it and then placed it in the new universe as earth c. So it's literally the same planet. And I thought the earth c was the universe Caliborn and Calliope originated from, so it's doomed eventually. ???

a) I'm pretty sure you lose items you were physically holding but not captchalogued items. b) depends upon who counts as fulfilling their quests. I don't remember Dave's Caledfwlch shenanigans involving music, or Jade's frog/universe stuff. I also don't think Tavros's quest involved music (I think he happens to be the troll whose "quest" we see the most of). really, I think Rose having to "play the rain" thing and John's piano piece are a coincidence and in the minority. however, all the Beta kids are associated with music (John/piano, Rose/violin, Dave/rap, Jade/flute and eclectic bass), and I think this was wholly intentional on Hussie's part (and probably Paradox Space's, too).

where does lil cal's cycle end/start over again? if dirks cal is empty and takes lord english's soul, shouldn't it eventually end up being bro's cal? or is that part of the whole "only one lil cal" part of his paradox? the last we see of lil cal is when given to caliborns jack noir and the soul is transfered, meaning it is empty again and can return to the cycle of being hollow and being filled with the soul again in the part. at least i think? i just cant find the complete circle of the lil cal timeline, or why dirks cal would be empty while daves is not, cause the only different is the scratch and that wouldnt affect the babys on the meteors, would it?

Lil cal has no beggining and no end. It is a self-fulfilling paradox. Gamzee pulls a lil cal with LE's soul into Dave's dream. The empty one from the B2 timeline is filled with LE's soul during Caliborn's masterpiece (a future event never shown in-comic outside Caliborn's own shitty animation). This Lil Cal is the same one Gamzee pulls from the void into Dave's dream. The thing Caliborn does to Jack Noir to mind control him isn't exactly clear, but it involves Caliborn using the empty Lol Cal to commune with Jack, who has the full one. Though the empty one does not have the full one's power, it does seem to be connected to it.

Gameover Gamzee was sawed. Alpha Gamzee was teleported to Earth c through the wormhole (that is the reason why it was needed at all).

The black hole during collide consumes gamzee, the crowbar, the Golden Cuestaff, and the core of Dirk's planet (where Yaldabaoth lives) - all things that mysteriously appear in Caliborn's session. So it can be surmised that Jack English's goal all along was to act as a portal to bring these items to Caliborn who, you'll recall, is the one who hijacked him in the first place.

When Slick breaks Scratch's clock Scratch beats the daylight (or should I say midnight hehe) out of him possibly showing some Gamzee rage. Scratch also does a lot of things to the story during his takeover to annoy the reader which aligns with some peoples ideas of a bard of rage messing with the story in meta ways to make the reader mad.

You know, the relationship between Caliborn and Davekat is one I'm still puzzling out, myself. I will say I don't think the timeline bears this particular interpretation out, though: While Lil Cal is actively influencing Dave, he's at his most homophobic/invested in presenting himself as a cool guy/ladies man type of guy. He initially doesn't think of Karkat that way at all, and if Lil Cal were the root of his feelings, you'd expect those feelings to come through strongest earlier in Dave's arc when Lil Cal has more influence. Dave and Karkat get close much later, when Dave is coming to understand his feelings about his home life/Lil Cal, who he regards as evil. On top of that, Caliborn is specifically into Dave and Karkat through the lens of manga/yaoi, which he regards as including an element of magic/illusion/trickery that lets you depict guys in more girly ways--so it's not entirely clear Caliborn would actually like Dave and Karkat together in canon/physical reality. Then again, to me Caliborn reads as pretty into Dirk and maybe even Jake, black romance ways, and heavily repressed about it. So maybe the sense of self-shame/self-repression about his interest in boys IS something Dave got from Lil Cal, partly? Hard to say with this stuff.
