Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei is known for her tactical and smart approach to tennis. She compensates her lack of physical power with her angled and unconventional shots to drive her opponents to frustration. Thus, she is touted as tennis' resident magician.
This is a compilation of Hsieh Su-Wei most impressive shots.

She is unreal to watch up close live. The timing on her shots has to be seen to be believed. Deceptively explosive power and she takes it so early. My favourite player to watch

Yeah, made sure to watch her at Roland Garros. She is so emotionless during the match, almost seems angry. Does she have to be friendly? No. But I found myself liking the players who smiled, joked around, showed positive energy more, men and women. Even with Asian fans singing songs for her and chanting, she was just completely stone faced and kind of got aggro towards ball kids. Still, game wise, probably still my fave WTA player. In person, her shots have a surprising amount of weight, and get to their spots pretty fast.

She doesn't hit a single shot early. Not one! She tries to hit it off the bounce. Her focus is timing because she doesn't have any mechanics to generate spin or pace. I think you are confused. Her admirable trait would be anticipation the next shot and deception in what she is going to do. Works on the WTA because they aren't dealing with heavy hit balls.

Every time I watch her play, I can't seem to comprehend how is it she hits the ball so effectively when it seems as if she is barely touching the ball - amazing to watch!! In badminton the correct term for 'lob' is lift and 'spike' is smash. But yes, drop shots are probably roughly 25% of all shots played, at least in singles, every inch of the court is used including net shots 2/3 inches from the net.

To be able to hit an unorthodox shot, a player must be able to conceive it. Most modern players are developed to be baseline power players, and are constrained as such. Su wei's unconventional training and development helped fulfill her talent on the tennis court.
@pv4981
@pv4981 5 лет назад
Her training is strokes are pretty conventional for an "Asian style" game. Asagoe, Peng, Tian Tian all have similar strokes and shot set up. Su Wei has skill but let's not act like she is the only player who does that. Bartoli does the double handed thing too...

Amazing that everyone hits the ball directly to her. Seems to happen a lot in both men's and women's tennis in general...it seems that a lot of players have zero interest in dictating the points and their strategy is to just return it to the opponent hoping they will miss. Or, refusing to hit a winning shot until they are 100% certain...usually happens after they grind it out foreveeeerrrrrr. She makes the shots and her opponents return them until they can't.

She is a special player. Doesn't worry about power but gets angles. It's all about angles and spin (and determined retrieving). she may hit cross court to ad when you are in deuce but she's not looking for the winner there--she's waiting until you are seriously out of position (and maybe a bit winded) then she's going to do a pin-point drop shot or lob or cross court and you're just going to watch it. If a player isn't thinking about hitting through their opponent but is just thinking hit it where they aren't ... their accuracy is going to be better. First thing she wants to do is get power players off their baseline perch and running. What's really interesting though is she is effective against excellent defensive players like Kerber and Wozniacki.

Her Ping-Pong slice is deadly, leaving many opponents just flat footed.

Well done, Su-Wei. For the title though, if "magical" means making your opponent move while your opponent has so-so returns (that does not force you to move equally), then all pro badminton matches are "magical." Once the mind game is won, the execution is secondary.

I wonder if she was a table tennis player before she switched to tennis. Those strong backspin shots are quite amazing, the way the ball just stops when it lands. She and Roger Federer would make a good doubles team.

Play them, where they're not. Play them, how they can't. Play them, wondering what. Play them, like none before. "Carving up space, in fun and unexpected ways - is how the game, beckons me." ~ Paul Jung (/Hsieh Su-wei!)

That's how a lot of people used to play 30 years ago. She reminds me of John McEnroe. And even Boris Becker a little. If you ever play with old men ~60 years+, that's how they play: constant backspin, drop shots, lobs, angles, side-spin, trying to confuse you. Partly because they can't out-run/out-power younger players, but mostly because that's how people used to play the game. It was a lot more entertaining to watch.
