This is a detailed video of how to replace the battery in an HTC 10 phone. It is notoriously difficult to perform successfully, so you can follow this video. I detail most of the issues encountered along the way and outline some of the mistakes that can be made. Good luck!

I have a tip for anyone that has the same problem I had. This guide is perfect and addresses many of the pitfalls before you make them. However, the camera has an attachment point that came undone when I followed this guide. I didn't realize it until I had the phone completely back together. Reattaching it involved an even more intricate teardown and reassemble than this guide. Save yourself some headache and don't detach the camera like I did. My phone currently works perfectly. This guide is wonderful.

Thank you for the detailed complete tutorial. Excellent video. Caution to anyone attempting this, be careful with those tiny wires. I broke the connector on the blue wire. I had to buy a parts phone to get the wire I broke. Pry from the wire side of the connector, it seemed to be more robust.

Thanks loads for sharing your skills. I used your video as instruction and I actually changed the battery of my HTC 10. It took me about 2 hours to get the screen off and in the end I worked 4 or 5 hours on the whole thing but I made it! Now I've got a couple of small black dots along the left edge of the screen, so I might have damaged it a little bit. But it doesn't disturbs so it's the price I gladly pay :D Now my phone doesn't turn off by itself anymore. Again, thank you so much!
@blackstone4823
@blackstone4823 4 года назад
That's great, we'll done, it's a tricky procedure. If you're really keen (but I wouldn't advise it) you can split the screen into its various layers from the back, they just peel apart. It's unlikely that you actually damaged the lcd part, the black spots are normally marks on the back light dispersion layer from prying when getting the screen off. It's normally tape or glue or dust. I use a cotton wool bud to clean it or compressed air to blow it out. If you're happy, don't bother though. Thanks.

Thank you very much for this step by step tutorial! This was my first phone repair and these directions covered everything I needed to replace my HTC 10 battery. When unclipping the main boards from the back case of the phone, I did pop the proximity sensor off accidentally when working the top edge and could not push it back into place. The sensor is connected like a little lego block and is sandwiched directly left of the front facing camera, so be careful when popping out the case housing around there. If I would have taken all the boards apart I think I could have popped it back in, but I didn't feel like extending this intricate surgery. Other than that, 100% success and my phone charge now lasts 3 days again. Thanks again!

Thanks. It's not so bad after the screen is off. Getting the screen off without damaging it is tricky. Some just stop working for no apparent reason because the ribbon cable can't cope with bending, and fractures inside. The older the phone gets, the harder it seems to be. Have fun!

The screen can stick to the backing and when you attempt to lift it, those bits of tape pull apart, sometimes leaving you with lots of layers of LCD screen to put back together. The main problem is keeping them clean! Glad it went well for you, it's not the easiest of repairs.

Thank you so much for this guide! It's the best guide on RU-vid regarding the HTC 10. Today I changed the battery in my dad's HTC10 using this guide and it all worked out well. It took me three hours but in the end I was very happy. I also changed the display as the old one was broken. I have a Zhalinda B6000 glue flask and I was wondering how to glue the screen back. Do I really need a template or can I apply the glue directly in the corners? Also the Power button came off and I was wondering if it needs any glue to stay in place or when I push the board back in it will press upon it and fix it in place? Thank you very much once again for all the work you've put in this video and be sure you saved a lot of people!
@blackstone4823
@blackstone4823 4 года назад
No you don't need a template, and I don't use one anymore because it is not good enough. I carefully clean off any lumps of old glue and then put a small bead of glue all around the edge, including where the ribbon cable is (can be tricky, do it there first with the screen in the closed position). I also put one bead just above the LCD panel being careful not to obstruct the speaker, camera and sensors, and one bead just below the LCD panel to prevent light bleed from the haptic keys. Position the screen carefully and press in to place. I then place the phone screen down on a flat surface with some heavy books in top for a few hours. I would carefully glue the power button on to hold it in place, but it might work with no glue. The case does hold it well when assembled, but the phone needs to be screwed down well for the power button to work properly. Glad the video helped, good luck with the final stages. Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for the video. My HTC10 battery or something (software bug) had been failing, same problem you read about. It had been doing the thing where it prematurely powered down (even at very high charge levels) and required a hard boot for weeks before it failed. The power board had failed, too, we thought, at the end. The phone would try to boot but then cut off. A couple of the connector types were difficult; had to develop techniques for those along the way. Your instructions were excellent! We successfully (imo) replaced the HTC 10 battery (and went ahead with a new screen and power board since we were at it). So the phone booted at 57% battery and operated all properly until drained. But something else is wrong -- the new power board won't charge and gets hot. I would like to find a way to charge the new battery that's installed while it's OUT of or disconnected from the phone, via that ribbon cable. (We haven't closed the phone up again so I can take it out easily. ) Can you help, please? One battery charge would at least allow me to recover some data.
@blackstone4823
@blackstone4823 4 года назад
Hi, sounds like you've had your fair share of HTC 10 fun! The power board getting hot is bad news and is normally caused by a short in the ribbon cable connector where it connects to the main board. When installing the power board, did you connect the ribbon cable with the battery connected? The battery must be disconnected at all times. Anyway, there's nothing you can do about it now except look to see if it's straight and pushed in properly. Unfortunately you can't charge the battery when it is disconnected via the cable, its a very complicated and electronically controlled process. If the data is important, all I can suggest is sending me the phone (if you're in the UK) and I'll do my best to get the data off. I have one here half in bits to help! All the best.
@rwind656

@@blackstone4823 Thanks very much for the reply. And offer of help! Unfortunately, I'm in the States. Maybe our discussion will help someone else who reads in future. The battery was never connected while we were replacing anything. And a correction -- the phone back was getting hot while I was draining that new battery, but the power board actually never responded; it was as though it wasn't connected. Not sure it was getting hot or not. My partner is an electronics engineer. I understand that you need a circuit to control charging a Lithium Ion battery. Along with the battery, power board, and screen, my partner had bought some little charging boards (intending to charge up that battery before installing). But the connections are extremely difficult so we didn't try that out while attempting rebuild of the phone. (Thus it came up at 57%; we were lucky we got any appreciable power.) Now that our rebuild did not work, there was nothing to lose, we thought. Last night after sending this question to you in comments, we were trying to connect one of the little charger boards to the new battery (all unplugged, of course). But upon touching with light force to make the connection, the black plastic part of the connector on the new battery's ribbon cable actually disintegrated. ( Same thing had happened to the connector on the first power board we tried before -- that black plastic must be getting old?! Never seen anything like it. Are all surface mounted connectors fragile near to one-time connectors? A moot point, I guess.) So... now I have a new battery with broken connector, and the original bad battery [ using a meter to test] with a good connector. Without getting into the silver packaging or chemistry of the old battery, we managed to remove the "end cap" circuit with ribbon cable of that old battery. It was taped on fairly strongly. It's just got two conductive tapes about 8mm (?) on the battery end for +/- that actually are accessible. We're assuming the little linear circuit board (teensy tiny parts!) is the temperature sensing part. So there we stopped for now.
@blackstone4823
@blackstone4823 4 года назад
@@rwind656 I think that most phones are one-time phones, never mind the connectors. They are never supposed to be opened, the phones lasts the contract period and that's it. It's a shame as I'm still using an HTC10 that is nearly 5 years old and it's great, I don't need anything else. I think more stuff should be repaired and re-used rather than thrown away. All of the internals are pretty fragile, it's difficult to dis-assemble and re-assemble without breaking something on your first attempt. You're lucky to have an electronics engineer on hand. I think that the linear circuit board is also the under and over charge protection circuitry. How much did the new battery cost you in the States? If the data is valuable, I can send a charged battery over so you can get the data off. It'll probably take about a week.
@rwind656
@rwind656 4 года назад
@@@blackstone4823, thanks very much. You did well to keep your phone in operation! Kudo's. I think I got most of my data off but I was having trouble with the USB-C cables transferring data to my desktop for a long time -- without realizing that some cables will only charge, not pass data. Duh. So I had not pulled everything off routinely. And had not kept up with backing up in other ways. Silly of me. We'll see later if I have salvaged my contacts list; I really think I might have saved everything else, and I might have the contacts as well, though the last time I migrated to this phone, it was garbled data. Fields missing and misplaced. Thanks for the offer to help; let's see how far we get. The new battery was ... something under $20? The screen was pricey-- pricier, and sure enough we separated the original on the first opening. I will ask how much it all cost, as I lost track and did not do the ordering -- I might miss a detail so I let my partner do the ordering. Today, as I was writing you, my partner ordered another power supply and we are going to attempt charging in some fashion (though I was pretty sure we already had an adjustable supply -- there must be a reason -- perhaps something more controllable). I know you don't want to overcharge and as well as +/- on the outside edges of the battery connector's ribbon cable, there were two other labels on the narrow little middle conductor. "ID" is perhaps an identifier for USB-C to say which way the plug is inserted by the user. [ I think from a search Look down below the drawings of plugs, a paragraph... batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_from_a_usb_port.] And "TH" has to do with the temperature sensing. Interesting. My partner suggested that just supply pos/neg might not be enough -- if the temp data is not supplied, or reads wrong, perhaps the phone will not operate. I guess it's become as much an electronics mystery project at this point.
@2slofouru
@2slofouru 4 года назад
The worst part of the ENTIRE job (besides unsticking the battery without shorting it and causing an explosion)...is putting the main body back into the outer case without kinking the buttons. It's amazing the original assemblers were able to do this by hand. In no way will it just slide back in, the top and bottom edges catch on the main body, which makes it difficult to focus on keeping the buttons out. Pure madness, lol.

Bottom ribbon was glued to the screen. You skipped a few frames then. There's absolutely no way to unglue that from the screen or prise it from the centre without wrecking it. Funny how all the HTC phone how-to videos on youtube from phone fixers never seem to have phones with major glue issues. Don't make it 100% clear or you'd dud yourself of money lol.

The bottom ribbon is always glued to the screen around the buttons, the heat you apply normally makes it peel away quite easily, without heat you'll probably break it. I'm not a phone fixer, just sharing my personal experience. In fact all the HTC10s I have fixed have been for free. I made it as clear as I could to help anyone out there keep their HTC10 in service.

@@blackstone4823 OK so why didn't you mention that it was ALWAYS glued in your video. You said sometimes both sides (maybe) The button on the other side no problem to unglue on mine even tho' you never had any. The other side didn't show you prising apart the ribbon from screen via the centre button...the video skipped a few frames. Everything else was manageable and you leave out the most difficult part!
