It's a long held stereotype that Chinese people drive badly, but is it based on reality or just a trope? It's true! But there's a reason...

I worked in Shanxi province in 1986. I had a drivers license. Cop who gave me the test did not know how to drive. We were warned by our American directors that we would be at fault in any accident no matter the circumstances. Also an article was passed around that EVERY licensed car in an adjacent city had been in an accident of some kind. I was in a remote area with few cars and fatal car accidents were a daily occurrence. I was in a new constructed city with wide streets but few cars. A head on accident between the only two cars on the street killed 8 people. There was a rule that we could not use headlights because it would blind the bicyclists. The horns on most Chinese vehicles are broken from over use. Scary times.

I don't think it's simply a matter of "traffic enforcement". The deeper problem is that Chinese (as a group, in general terms of course) fail to pay much mind to how their actions effect those around them. It can be seen in the shouting, hand gestures, spitting and petty nuisances I have seen Chinese people display inside / outside of China. If you compare a group of Japanese or Korean tourists with Chinese tourists you'll understand my point. The first groups give a lot of care as to how their actions are perceived by others, the latter group cares very little. The driving problems in China are not seen in other developing countries with little traffic enforcement (Thailand and Mongolia have much better drivers and a similar absence of enforcement). The problem is how Chinese people relate to strangers in general.

You could pull all cops off the road in the US and there would be no real change in the number of accidents. Tickets should ONLY be given if a accident is caused anyway. I’m just talking about basic (to us) things like how most of us know you should put other people before yourself, even if many choose not to. I've done a number of trips to China across the past decade. The thing that surprised me the most about the whole place is the seeming lack of a sense of DANGER that the population has. In Australia, we see a dangerous act or situation and (unless you're a bogan or daredevil) assess what we can do to avoid getting mixed up in it. In China: they just go do whatever the f they want, no matter if it hurts themselves or others. Prime example: footpaths and bike paths move in opposite directions to what a normal human would expect. AND many cyclists refuse to switch on their lights at night! "I can see OK, bugger the rest of you!!" So, not only do you have to do mental gymnastics to work out in which particular direction you should be walking in amongst different foot and bike paths; but you also need night vision so you don't get collected by an electric scooter! Walking across city streets is also an exercise in WTF: the little green man does NOT mean that you have right of way as a pedestrian (as it does in all other civilizations). It means that if you're lucky, your injuries sustained from being hit by one of the 8 lanes of traffic will not be too bad.

Sorry but I'm not buying it. At 3:27 the woman on the bicycle enters a traffic lane and never looks to see if a car is coming. When I lived in San Francisco I would see this same behavior every day. I would be on a main road and a Chinese person would turn from a side street with a stop sign and never stop nor even look if a car was coming. I would have to slam on my brakes to keep from hitting them. That type of behavior is not due to lack of enforcement. It is due to lack of intelligence / inability to predict an outcome and learn from your mistakes.
@sephkurai

Yes but enforcement and punishment can build that understanding. San Francisco has so many damn roads how often did you see cops patrolling? In Asian countries many if not most people don't drive. Cars are expensive, taxes and registration is very expensive, and fuel is EXTREMELY expensive. Couple that with no place to park and decent mass transit in the modern, developed cities and car ownership is a needless luxury to most. The upshot is that most don't grow up riding in a car with their parents watching them drive and watching the road through the windshield, then learning to drive themselves in their middle teens as a rite of passage like we do. Now when they emigrate to the US, Canada, etc. car ownership is a necessity. Now they're in the position where they have to learn to drive as adults in their 20s, 30s, or even 40s. It's a completely unnatural experience for them in a way that it isn't for us, and they're learning with a fully-developed sense of mortality to boot. Of course they're timid and frightened. Driving a car hurtling down the street at 35 mph or the freeway at 70+ with hundreds of other cars doing the same is insane. If someone in 1900 proposed the transportation system that we have today, they would have locked him up in an insane asylum for life.

"If you did follow the rules properly in China, you just wouldn't get anywhere" - this sums up it nicely. It's also applicable to almost every aspect of Chinese life. The thing is, there actually are rules, real rules people adhere to, but they're just not written anywhere so that you have to spend hard time figuring them out. On the road it must be: whoever ahead is ahead, both physically and psychologically. Only those who are ahead can have the right of way...

The road rage nearly got him his ass kicked, he just sat there with people beeping then one guy ran up and tired his door and kicked his door in, the student took off. In the UK, they have experimented with the removal of all traffic controls, such as traffic lights, give way signs, etc. in town centres. The result was lower speeds and less accidents as drivers carefully negotiate around each other. A friend from abroad I met on a training course marvelled at a centuries old bridge crossing the river Exe. A very long bridge with no passing places and only wide enough for a single vehicle, originally a cart. He marvelled at how drivers took turns to cross from both sides and said it would never work anywhere else, the result being drivers meeting in the middle and blaring their horns. Often it's the people and the culture they create that makes the difference.

wow this really explains a lot. My first ever work was to stand on a road with a radio holding a red flag and make sure traffic flowed relatively smoothly during road work. We where doing maintenance and a few upgrades on one side of the road at the time. 1 lane in each direction, standard country side road. 2 day course and lots of safety practice + about 40 minutes into my very first shift and i had to jump down a about 80 cm ditch for fear of my life. Radioed my co-worker on the other end that had just let his queue go so he let all the workers know. They had to scoop up that rental car out from the ditch and it was full of a Chinese family. No one was hurt in any bad way and i got a nice story out of it + my co-workers had a bit more respect for me as i just went right back up the road and worked on even tho i was in my right to take a break after that. Before I start, please don’t take my comments offensively. It’s just my opinion based on my observations. This goes without saying that those are in part generalizations. My experience is based on having lived in Asia for over 4 years, helping my girlfriend learn how to drive and mostly observing some Chinese trainee pilots while I was doing my commercial pilot training as well. I think the problem goes way deeper than just a lack of law enforcement. You won’t make people drive better by punishing them. I think the root cause lies in three things: A lack of situational awareness (e.g. recognizing things going on in your environment, realizing you are creating a dangerous situation, an inability to judge the speed of moving objects), failure to adapt to changing situations and an often apparent lack of spatial orientation (e.g. parking a car and being unable to judge distances and required steering angle). Coming back to Situational awareness: In a society were people’s attention is often limited to the area between their nose and smartphone 30cm in front of their face, while blindly walking around and bumping into things, how do you think this is going to translate to driving, let alone flying an aircraft? It’s still astonishing me every time I’m in China how little most people perceive of what’s going on around them while being absorbed by a singular activity. Additionally, while in my experience many Chinese are excellent learners and great at copying behavioral patterns, most fail miserably when challenged with problems requiring a creative solution which constantly arise in dynamic environments such as road or air traffic. What goes along with that is that I’ve seen many cases where said Chinese trainees showed a complete lack of „feeling for the stick“ (or feeling for the wheel when talking about cars). That made me think that most of them never really develop any muscle memory for even the simplest tasks but just always have to consciously think about what they are doing, which leads to them being so absorbed that the loose situational awareness for other things. What is also a mystery to me (not specifically applying to Chinese but most Asian countries I’ve been to) is the lack of common sense concerning the danger of speed and getting hit by a speeding car/bike. In summary it hinkt this goes way deeper than just a lack of education and law enforcement. I guess it must have something to do with behavioral patterns and probably peoples ways of thinking. Again, this is merely my opinion, although it might offend some. I know their are exceptions to what I said and I personally know some. I know from personal experience that it is possible to change such things, but it takes a lot of time and effort. However I feel most of what I said applies to the majority of Chinese.

Very close Daniel. It goes back to developmental ages 1-4 years old. They're not building enough wooden block towers, digging in sand pits and exercising imagination from the world around em. Parent's just carry baby kids everywhere, even in the home and won't let them touch anything anything inedible. Then as soon as they are able, shove them in front of mountains of text books. A recipe for permanent spacial isolation and a catalyst for shit driving. It is going to take more than shouting and traffic fines to fix that. It needs a time machine and a wheelbarrow of good quality toys.

What an amazing difference between Japan, it’s just a couple hours flight away. I’d even say, they drive better than most places in the world, here. Merging? Japanese will thank you by turning on their hazards as courtesy, to say “thanks for letting me in!” An uncontrolled intersection is where there is no traffic signal, an actual stop sign (or may have one), as well an inverted red triangle yield sign. Yes, when you’ll find actual signage, it’s a hexagonal “Stop” or “Arret” in North America, South Africa and a few other countries. As a rule, at an uncontrolled intersection, always give way to the right or left depending on which side of the road, you drive on, to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. “The noun “STOP” in the English language also has a very clear definition. It means “A cessation of movement or operation” which, simply put means coming to a complete STOP. The word is even in capital letters - to remove any doubt, not because “slow down” won’t fit on the sign.”

In the UK, there is a list of countries recognised by our licensing authorities as having equivalent standards to ours, so these licences can be exchanged for UK ones, if the holder becomes a resident. For all other countries, the driver has to go through the driving test process to get a UK licence (overseas licences from outside the EU are only valid for 12 months after entering the UK).

I own my driving license in China for about 10 years and driving in China my own car. From my point of view there are more reasons. One is the incredible and unbelievable aggressive driving that seems only have one rule: to be first. No matter if they can or cannot, squeezing in, cutting traffic and enforcing priority is very common. That comes with the Chinese nature to ignore others. That turning into the wrong direction on a high-speed way might be a good idea when they missed the exit, it puts no only their own life on risk but the life of OTHERS. But taking care of other people, which are not part of their close social cycle, is not part of Chinese nature. Another reason is the lack of education and enforcement (so I agree here). Proper driving education and traffic rules enforcement is just a couple of years in place, so there are lots of people on the road, who are not used to traffic rules or even had a proper driving test before hit the road.

If you ask me I think this all started under the Mao administration. When he became the leader of the ruthless regime, many Chinese died because of starvation. It was then that families only thought about themselves. That was when the I have to be first in line or I don't get anything attitude developed. There was not enough food to go around. So if food became available, everybody rushed to get their share . This was going on for generations is still ingrained into their DNA. This is my opinion.

I actually had no idea such a thing as 4-way-stops exist before watching this vid. Here in Germany, the person coming from the right of you always has right of way, except when you're driving on a specifically designated priority road, and if you make a left turn EVERYONE else has right of way over you (again with the exception of priority roads). STOP signs only exist in places where you can't see (or can only hardly see) traffic coming from the right lane while approaching the intersection. So, I learned something about the US today. Huh!

I always thought the lack of 4 way stops was due to roundabouts being more common in Europe? Roundabouts are fairly uncommon here in the states, and they kind of do the same job as 4 way stops or intersections. I live in a city of several million people and I only know of 2 roundabouts in the entire city. There are 4 way stops everywhere here though. The 'person to the right of you' thing is the same with 4 way stops also: if two or more people arrive at a 4 way stop at the same time, the person farthest to the right has priority.

We also have a lot of driving schools use the neighbourhood for road instruction, MLC students with MLC instructors and I have video of one instructor supervising the student who is circling the block and while I’m standing on the corner recording makes three circuits without a stop at any of the corners two of which I can clearly see. That one was reported to the supervisor of driving instructors who thanked me for the video. The driving instruction licensing system uses a white L on red rectangle for learners, a white H on green rectangle for new drivers during the first 24 months. Funnily enough the local borne 2nd and 3rd generation Chinese Canadians have made an identical spoof white C on yellow to stick on MLC driver’s cars.

When my Chinese mother in law came to the US for a visit, she got to the 4-way stop sign and was totally lost. People started honking at her... and then going around her while honking at her. She froze in place, utterly confused at how you know when it's your turn to go... I had never experienced that before... I was confused at what just happened... Some time later, my Chinese came up to a t-intersection. She had the stop sign... the two other lanes did not. Actually... the other lane had 50 mph speed limit. A pickup truck slammed into her car... a total loss. Another thing I've noticed is that they are not big on car seats... I actually installed the car seat in her car, before the boy was born. On that day, he was seated in the car seat, with no belts on. I remember telling her "It's okay, accidents happen. You don't have to cry...." And she goes... "Michael wasn't buckled." To acquire these skills requires much more time and practice than learning how to control vehicle motion. Another few points regarding stop sign etiquette are 1) the car on your right gets the right of way if it was a tie to a complete stop. Thanks, I finally understand something. There is a famous international tourist area in my city, De Zaanse Schans that I have to travel through by bicycle regularly, and all the Chinese tourists always wander from the pedestrian area into the bicycle area in spite of very clear signs denoting each. Very annoying, luckily I only actually ever hit one of them, but I had many near misses.

@A J old, adult people or people who were thought that all foreigners are spies so they're instantly suspicious of you if you go around with a camera. that is at least the explanation given although there was a young man there in his 30ies, and there were "evil aunts" that laughed and posed for the camera without being marked in any form so I kind of suspect it might be A LITTLE prejudge on both sides of the camera here...

There are no 4-way stops in Britain either, probably in the whole of Europe. We use roundabouts instead, which keep the traffic flowing better, and where you only have to stop to give way to someone else. If there's no-one to give way to, there's no need to stop. Americans driving in Britain don't understand this concept, and get confused on roundabouts. In one case I know of, a foreign driver confused a roundabout for a traffic circle (which Britain doesn't use anywhere) and believed they had right of way entering the roundabout. They t-boned a car already on the roundabout, with a good friend of mine as a passenger. Equally if you drive in Germany, you need to adapt your driving style to allow for unrestricted speeds on most autobahns. Yes, high speeds can be dangerous, but German drivers know that. They drive much more conscientiously than anyone else, with much more discipline, empathy, and consideration than anywhere else I've driven. If you were to drive there like you do in America (including Canada, where I live now), tailgating and weaving from lane to lane, you would cause an accident very quickly. So it's not that American 4-way stops are so good and China should use them too (which you imply right from the start), it's more that we all need to understand that road rules vary around the world and we need to adapt to comply with them. And if Chinese driving habits are so bad, maybe USA should consider not recognising a Chinese licence as valid? There's an element of "America is best" which comes across here. It isn't. Other countries often do things better.

What really blew my mind was watching she was actually turning into that direction and even when she had a choice to still go in right direction, still went oposite ...
