FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

GARMIN is the best. Still remember when the G1000 came out and it was absolutely revolutionary. Still flying G1000 and newer avionics. Absolutely love them. Really nice to see who is behind all this and seeing that it's a bunch of pilots and enthusiasts.

Great video...I laughed at his tip at 11 minute mark about putting the green flight path marker on the end of the runway and you will never get a CDI deviation. I just learned that from my nephew who was flying with me. It was a game changing tip that has made my hand flown approaches close to perfect every time. If I put the flight path marker in between the numbers and the 1000 foot marker it will perfectly center the CDI and VDI.

Garmin are without doubt the industry leader covering everything from very low cost apps and portable hardware up to fully certified installations by OEMS. The Touch screen User Interface is common across all their latest products, so learn one learn them all. I love the amazing functionality of my Aera 660 & GDL50 when coupled to an Internet connection - the situational awareness it provides is amazing including Weather and the Traffic Awareness has helped save me from near misses with other aircraft not fitted with Traffic Awareness where I could see them but not vice versa in poor visibility conditions.

Incredibly exciting technology, now I just need to fly the pattern to final and hit auto land! 😃
@FlightChops

What's crazy is that autoload works from way before final. If the pilot is incapable, it will take over and decide where to go for a safe emergency landing, looking at all the available info, and select the route, approach, change the transponder code, etc.

Agreed that may sims (redbird specifically) can be harder to fly than the real thing in certain contexts. (specifically trimming for hand flying IFR in cruise, and attempting hand flown visual landings)

Hey Steve, Great video as usual. Its amazing to see what goes into the civilian side of things, these videos are a great insight. Hopefully in the not so distant future I will be building my own aircraft (kit, plans or somebody else's abandoned project) and "what goes into the panel" is one of the things I have been thinking about what goes into the panel and I like the "Earn its way onto the panel" mentality. Food for thought. Thanks, Mel.

Cool stuff. Great contents again as usual. Thanks! Will the autoland eliminate the need to pass physicals?....Just kidding....maybe. The one thing I was thinking negative about that feature, and I'm sure it's not something that's too likely, but I'm like most other pilots, I imagine, who occasionally has a hijack scenario go through his head. One bargaining chip we tend to think of is "if you shoot me who's going to land the plane?". The autoland could potentially take that away.

I know someone deathly afraid of flying. He said if he were to fly he would want to sit in the cockpit and push every button. Maybe Garmin should use phobic passengers for testing? For software testing we would always try to employ subjects with zero experience with user interfaces. They are increasingly hard to find.

I´m not too sure about this ¨saving pilots from themselves¨. This is the type of ¨safety¨ that screwed up Airbus in the first place by not letting pilots have direct control. Now Boeing is following into this too. I´m old school.

@peteranderson037
@peteranderson037 3 года назад
I can see mounting a HUD being prohibitively expensive on anything except a business jet, but synthetic vision glasses might not have to go through the same certification process because you're not modifying the aircraft. I could see it being like ADSB-In where it is simply classified as a navigation aid.

this is kinda hilarious, from a usability and readability point of view Garmin's stuff is complete garbage, it's just random stuff all over the screen, no logic, no design, just plastering information over every tiny little space, any respectable UX designer would flee in horror from this company's nonsense. G1000 is a $22000 piece of kit.
