In this episode of Flight Chops, we are pushing the new Flight Chops Van’s Aircraft RV-14 through the paces of final Flight Testing while also being mindful of the ongoing break-in of the Lycoming Thunderbolt engine. Around hour 10, we’re preparing to test and document the flight envelope of the RV-14 which consists of a controlled climb at max gross weight and assessing stall characteristics.

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Incredibly emotional to see Baloo at 2:32 and 2:39, never expected him to show up in a @flightchops video. And I am pretty sure that was Baloo on the radio at 2:47 saying "ready to go!" I spoke with Elliot after Baloo passed away (in the plane from this video as a matter of fact) and he was super kind and supportive. Love your channel man, keep up the good work.

Why does Dave speak so fast on the radio, he doesn’t do it talking in the hanger why do it in the aircraft,surely it’s not that busy at that time and place, I couldn’t hear very much from the radio. Speaking that fast makes new pilots feel embarrassed to ask for a repeat and that can cause a very dangerous situation. You talk to any new student and 90% of the time they will say the radio is their most nervous part of learning. Other than that I really enjoyed the whole build process. @FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
For VFR the most critical read back is a hold short instruction. Fort almost all other cases simply replying with the last 3 letters of the tail number is sufficient but I agree that it feels weird, so I usually read back key elements of instructions.

How does a plane's deceleration into a stall matter? I know from physics that force is mass multiplied by acceleration. If a plan decelerates quickly into a stall that would change the forces on the plane, and wouldn't that change how the stall happens? I guess Elliot's point about deceleration raised some questions, and I'm wondering what aircraft stall testing does to address the question of what happens if your aircraft's deceleration into the stall is not nice and smooth?
@deSloleye
@deSloleye 2 года назад
I think it's lag in instrumentation. You're trying to accurately measure stall speed, but if you had towards it too quickly you can be slower than you think
@greket1
@greket1 2 года назад
Wings stall at any speed, not just slow speed. Maybe he was talking about having to test the high-speed stalls.
@SaroopD
@SaroopD 2 года назад
At faster speeds when you have an aggressive increase in alpha the airflow over the wings sticks longer than it would during a slower one which will affect stall speeds and characteristics. Imagine a fighter executing a max performance pitch up vs a smooth pull from an airliner. You can also see This in some videos of jet demo teams where at the start of the maneuver the vape cloud is very tight and expands rapidly.

Love you guys but some constructive criticism here. Use standard phraseology. When cleared for take off, repeat that with the runway. Cleared into Bravo, repeat that not just CGA.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
Feedback is always appreciated. In this case though, we're actually not incorrect. For VFR in Canada, read back of the last 3 letters only is acceptable for acknowledging most clearances, (Hold short instructions being an exception where that is expected to be read back). And for entering Bravo when VFR (FAA regs), you must hear the controller explicitly say you're "cleared into the Bravo", but actually reading that back is not required. I'll admit though that I tend to error on the side of reading back more IFR style. (and you'll see an other comment under this video is suggesting I was over doing it when I redundantly added "...Windsor Traffic, CGA" at the end of my position report calls when the tower was closed.)

@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
Haha yeah - thanks for being engaged, but the average view duration on RU-vid is ~8 mins at best… so I rarely make videos over 20 mins long. There is easily 15 mins that I could spend analysing what it has taken to get my head around managing deceleration and descending in this airplane (especially with engine break-in power settings in mind when we can’t just pull power and dive). So it’s worth an episode to examine that…
