Humpback whales charge group of transient orcas

Two humpback whales charge into a group of transient orcas that are hunting a young sea lion in British Columbia.
We're not sure if they are trying to save the sea lion, a known companion of humpbacks or if they are just curious of the activity.
An extremely unique situation, as there are times when a humpback is the prey of the transients.

humbacks are known to defend other animals not of their species against predators, theres a great video of a humpback defending and shielding a freediver against a huge tiger shark..humpbacks have a kindness to their spirit for sure... orcas are more like humans when it comes to being the best at killing, improvisation, adapting, and protecting family members, love them both! very cool to see this interaction.

Orcas even work together with humans somethimes to hunt whale's. They only want the tongue Wich is useless for humans and some humans have learned they only want the tongue so they just give it. Kind of like the deep sea maffia

I agree 100, I feel like because they have seen so many killer whale attacks on their own kind they remember it and don't want the same to happen to other mammals.

The whales were trumpet blowing as well. That’s a distress signal and warning to all other creatures who can understand it in the nearby area. Humpbacks do not like orcas that kill other mammals. Even though humpback calves are preyed upon by orcas, the majority of instances where humpbacks actively disrupt orca activity is when orcas are hunting other mammals.

Sea lions and humpback often hang out for some reason ? It been documented for quite awhile now ! So its prolly a more personal or maybe even territorial thing for the humpy's . Maybe they feel like driving the orca out of this area .and defending other sealife is how they do it ! as this is where the whales pass thru and they want a safe place to be ! If you eliminate the orcas food source even for a short time they will move on . They have to ! The big whales prolly know this . As in whales everything in thier life is about timing . They need to be in certain places at certain times . So if the humpy's can make an area safe , the killers will go hunting else where . They got to eat on a regular basis too . And stealth is a part of thier game . So once every body knows your in town and have big friends ,it makes it hard for the killers and they just move on ! Peace be safe !

the mistery is easier to explain i think, the whales harassed the orcas because they dont like orcas because they are killing their calves, same behavior in africa where elephants, hippos and buffalos sometimes attack the big predators and safe other animals by doing that

Or............. humpbacks and sperm whales have a much larger frontal cortex than we do. And I mean MUCH larger. A vast amount of their brain is taken up with it. This part of the brain that is enlarged in whales is the part that controls higher emotions such as compassion, empathy, altruism etc. So, therefore they are extremely capable of higher emotions I.e. compassion, empathy and altruism. It's a brain geared towards selfLESSness rather than selfISHness. It flies in the face of evolution with all it's "selfish gene" rot. Why would evolution, which is concerned only with selfishness, self preservation and self put so much effort into evolving an inherently selfless brain? Sorry mate, there is a simple and very obvious explanation... it's called ALTRUISM.
@lmatt88
@lmatt88 4 года назад
@@scalperjack1 Yes there is, this is a specific example of it. Whales have even taken sea lions on their bodies to ice blocks while pushing away orcas. Why would they do that? ALTRUISM. Grow up yourself.
@alexanderplatypus3664
@alexanderplatypus3664 2 года назад
@@milanka882 "Selfish Gene" is not rot... pretty sure you don't understand what that's about Altruism or apparent altruism and cooperation are indeed aspects of passing on genetic material as well as competition. I think you make a huge assumption about whale brains here, remember whales bodies are much much larger than humans are as well, it's more about brain:body ratio overall.... and I don't think we 100% understand all the functions of brains just yet either.

Humpbacks are the strongest and most agile truly big whale ton per ton haha, those guys have been observed breaching the water with the whole body 20-25 times per day in the breeding grounds{seasons}, we are talking about 25-30 tons heavy animals!

Is it true that Orcas prey upon Humpback calves when the bull is not around? I know that a large pod of Orcas can be dispersed by a single bull Sperm Whale. The Sperm Bull is the genuine king of our oceans, not the Orcas and definitely not the evil sharks.
@jonbw12
@jonbw12 5 лет назад
Honestly after watching some videos, I am not liking orcas, as they are what their names says, they are whale killers and I know they do this to survive, but at times after marine biologists investigate they sometimes do this as sport to kill others. Sharks are known to kill, but this is most common of the 'Tiger' shark and not the great white as they are more aggressive and are known for eating anything. Sharks look evil but they wouldn't attack a whale compared to orcas. Orcas have packs, while sharks are solitary and it would be daft them trying it on a mammal twice their size that could potentially harm it. Orcas even kill great whites

vince Foss First off your question is a good one if funny too. I am no expert other than a human doctor who sadly saw a right whale victim beached with my family after human ships or more human technology had led to that. There is a term for resident orcas who return every year to their homes away from antarctic feeding over decades, centuries, millennia; they are not necessarily always the only orcas as there are often transient or non-resident orcas but they are more often not with the more social and matriarchal groups and more often are adult males grouping for hunting and safety. Maybe another cetaceanist could comment on difference in transient versus non-resident.

@shaunapinnock7303
@shaunapinnock7303 6 лет назад
Eggsdayz , The reason is that, Humpbacks are VERY compassionate beings, quite like us; now, these Transient Orcas prey on the calves of Humpback and all other young whales, as well as sick/weak larger whales and even those in good health, that they think are of a manageable enough size for them to outmaneuver. The Humpbacks STRONGLY DESPISE Transients and ANYWHERE they see them attacking of feasting on other mammals, they rush in try to break it up, most times successfully! It’s an ongoing war, that will never end, due to the nature of the Humpies; they are the protectors/defenders of the ocean, very sensitive, altruistic, empathetic, caring, nurturing beings. They even protect divers from sharks. It’s as if, the fact that they’ve taken SO MANY losses to Transient Killer Whales, they’ve made a vow to spend their time, as long as they’re alive and able bodied, to protect ANYTHING AND ANYONE from them. Even when they’ve ALREADY KILLED the prey, the Humpbacks rush in and break it up, as if they’re saying “NOT OVER MY DEAD BODY, YOU’RE NOT EATING THIS WHILE I’M AROUND! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!!!” Do you hear how they are kind of screaming why they ram them with their huge bodies, making distress calls, so that others can hear from close and far away that the Killers are around????? To me, it sounds like they’re charging into them and saying “MOTHERFUCKERRRRRRRR!!!!! GTFOH!!!!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love Humpies! ❤️🐋💘🐳

Why refer to them as "transient"? Are they not just a pod on the move? A pod would be a family led by the matriarch. Were they a small group of males? Females are not evicted from the pod upon adulthood as males are.
@leonrhodes8700
@leonrhodes8700 3 года назад
Because they do move ! They are not known to a specific area ,could go any where possibly in the world . Other orca are only know to certain areas . And this is why they starve . When the area is over fished the fishermen leave . But the orca stay and there is no way for them to adapt since they dont eat seal and such things ! Some believe the transient orca are actually a different species !
