HUMUNGOUS 2 STROKE V 4 STROKE DEBATE! Cross Training Enduro

The latest in our monster enduro vlog series from www.crosstraini... - would a two stroke or four stroke enduro bike suit you better? We did a light-hearted look at the old four stroke vs two stroke debate, but the question gets asked so much I figured it was time for a slightly more serious vid.
First up, I'm all for four stroke and two stroke riders taking the piss out of each other and having a laugh. But it's ridiculous how many clowns take this seriously, and honestly think one sucks and the other rules, and if they can just yell loud enough and hurl abuse on forums then people will agree with them.

No one likes a one-eyed bigoted fundamentalist when it comes to religion, it gets boring even faster when you come up against these dirt bike fundamentalists. Personally, I almost got a four stroke Sherco 300 last year, but opted for the RR300 instead so I take the piss out of four stroke riders at the moment. However, I still look with lust upon the French maiden, the Sherco SEF-R300 and if I buy one I'll then be taking the piss out of two stroke riders. But if you want to seriously argue about this stuff please give me a stiff coffee to stop me falling asleep.
Talking of falling asleep, everyone finds a graph boring. I reckon this is a very broad summary. But keep in mind rider skill will trump your choice of engine every time. For example, Toni Bou is the world's top trials rider on a four stroke - he is so good that any power or weight disadvantage is neglible. And if you put Graham Jarvis on a thumper I'm sure he would still flog the vast majority of the world's best extreme enduro riders.
Here is an overview of the potential advantages and disadvantages of going four stroke or two stroke.
TWO STROKE BENEFITS
More powerful per cc
Lighter
Less likely to stall at low revs
Less likely to overheat at low speed
Quieter over a distance
Cheap top end overhaul & do-it-yourself
Cheaper to buy when new
TWO STROKE DRAWBACKS
Less economical and more pollution
You need to premix oil
Snappy response can make traction hard
Front end can be twitchy & easily deflected
Much less engine brake
More engine noise for the rider
Top end rebuilds are more frequent
FOUR STROKE BENEFITS
Smooth power delivery good for traction
Better fuel economy & less pollution
Engine braking is good for beginners
Less snappy response good for beginners
Engine noise is quieter for the rider
Less frequent top end rebuilds
Extra weight gives a 'planted' feel
FOUR STROKE DOWNSIDE
Expensive & time-consuming top end rebuilds
Heavier
Easier to overheat at low speed
Much more likely to stall at low revs
Exhaust noise travels much further
There are many things that can complicate the choice between a two stroke and four stroke.
In some countries, pollution laws will restrict which bikes can be registered for road use, and even which can be raced or not. For others, it can be very subjective and one will appeal much more even if on face value it wouldn't be the logical choice.
One thing does stand out to me, and that is the two stroke does benefit the skilled rider more. The instant engine response at low revs that can break traction so easily becomes an asset to the skilled rider, who can constantly blip the throttle in tough terrain to get traction in certain spots, then deweight the bike over slippery bits.
And while modern two strokes have much less of a powerband than their ancestors, the way the power kicks in at higher revs can still be intimidating for the less experienced rider.
In the end, you really just need to get a good test ride on both a two stroke and four stroke to see which you would prefer, and remember your riding skill will always be way more important in the long run.
And in the long run, eventually the debate will be over because it will all be electric bikes once the technology is good enough... you'll probably be able to just dial in whether you want a two stroke or four stroke engine characteristics.

Two strokes have a more aggressive power delivery, they make you tired faster, they have a strong smell and a very loud sound when the power valve opens.. But they also have some drawbacks.

But 2 strokes arent as loud as 4 strokes. And even if they are, 4 strokes are solely responsible for tracks shutting down due to sound. 4 strokes' sound carries much much farther than that of 2 strokes. When up close, 2 strokes are loud, but the sound just doesn't carry like a 4 strokes sound will

Received my BETA RR 300 today...the bike on a stand was pissing fuel = > went for disassembling the carb and while doing so I discovered I am missing 1 screw (the one I unscrewed in the process - holding the oil hose on the carb), which was nowhere to be found around the bike. I started to get really nervous, when I looked at the open engine intake hole. I stopped doing everything, took a small mirror and discovered the screw deep inside the intake (just at the edge of the cylinder). These was one of the worst moments in my life so far. Took a screwdriver with magnet and managed to take it out. Hell, that was close...Guys and girls - when tinkering with the bike, always cover the engine openings!

+michail1963 nice save, michail! be sure to tell the dealer about the float level, they need to get this info back to head office so they start to set it correctly. it's an easy fix to a small problem and they've had a few years now to get it sorted. :( hope you like the bike, still haven't heard a single case of someone who didn't fall in love with their italian princess after the first ride.

The four stroke flatters the standard rider with average or below average clutch skills. In other words, the two stroke is effective in the expert hands, which is not most of us. In slippery conditions, you'll really appreciate a four stroke. I have a particular model you will love... KTM 350 XCF-W It flatters everyone who rides it. 6 speed, light hydraulic clutch, electric start, fuel injected, weighs the same as a 250 with a lithium battery. There is a reason that the 350 is KTM's biggest selling engine in Australia. Put your ego aside and ride one of these at a KTM ride orange event.

Put it this way, I'd sooner buy a two stroke with a sketchy service history than a four stroke. "Never raced or thrashed. Used only fully synthetic oil changed every 5 hours..." Says the add on Bike Sales.. Funny how most have around 99.9 hours on them to. Every time you buy a used 450 four banger, a parts counter employee gets his wings..

9fifty5 I put over 2000 hours of hard desert and dunes riding on my modded wr250f (cams, full exhaust, intake modes, and jetted). Valves never went out of spec besides when I added the cams that changed the clearances. Sold it for $4500, bought it new otd for $5000 as a left over model. Nothing but gas tires and oil. Bought a ktm 450 excr, put over 10,000 miles on that bike is the same conditions (don't remember the hours), and it didn't need any valve adjustments either. Only bikes I've seen that needed valve adjustments were crappy titanium valve unicam Hondas. I've never seen a bike for sale with 99 hours on it. They would just reset it and claim 20 hours selling for baby crib. There is a video out after ktm tore down a race bike at 150 hours. Looked brand new in spec sans some carbon buildup. Look at your 2 stroke head after 150 hours and it will leak down more fluid than a teen on her prom night, and it'll have more pits than her dates pimple scarred face. And then you have to pray that the mist gods allowed oil into your crank bearings, all while 4 strokes glide on oil from an oil pump and dedicated forced circuit. With 2 strokes, you have to worry about the oil mixture, how the guy rode it (engine braking, rung out), and when you'll need to rebuild the thing after you just rebuilt it. With 4 strokes, you need to worry if the chassis has Honda stamped on it... *mic drop

Done over 100 hours on my '13 SEF300-R since I bought it and love it. Wasn't trying anything else except old 2T Honda CRM250 but not missing anything in my 4T Sherco. I think electric bikes should make great trials bikes as they can be made light, travel distance is not big and having a good quick battery change system with charger you could have a really nice solution. Electric for Enduro and Motorcross?... I reckon not realistic for at least another 5 years. Need a breakthrough in batteries' capacity and pricing for that. I've done my electric car conversion project few years ago and I think I have developed some feeling about practicality and limitations of these things.

One thing I really appreciate about my 2-stroke: it's really easy to kick-start. Combine that with it hardly ever stalling, even on a tricky hill-climb in too low a gear...and right there you're free of two major hassles of trail riding. Took a while to learn how to ride it smoothly and confidently but I'm glad I stuck with it and I am now totally sold on my 2-stroke. Next question is what my upgrade's going to be... can't wait :)

Interesting point on traction. Big bang 4-cylinders with their uneven "rough" firing order give more controllable traction than their regular counterparts with evenly spaced working strokes. That happens because the tire has more time to "recover" after being pushed to the limit by the working stroke. So it makes sense that a two stroke single is harder to control tractionwise than a four stroke. In fact a four stroke single should be about as easy as it can get with engine layout.

@gasdive

+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I think that's going to be one of the issues with electrics. The torque is very very even. A real steady push. Great until you break traction, but from then on, there's almost no flywheel and the rear end spins up like crazy. Unless they put in something that cuts the power for a tiny moment every few milliseconds, it's going to be a big problem.

I have a KTM 500exc all set up for single track with all the goodies (flex bars,Rekluse clutch,scotts steering damper,rear handlebar brake,tubliss,suspension setup for nasty off road rocks,roots act. and other trail hardware) I recently bought a Beta 300RR Racing and set it up the same way. I feel that riding the tight technical trails its hard to beat the lighter weight of the 2 stroke, the motor has such smooth bottom end power and will not stall no matter how hard I try. My KTM 500 feels very stable at speed and can gooble up trail trash at speed. IT also hill climbs like a boss, but slower speed technical stuff, it tends to run hot and it pop stalls in the worst spots that leaves me looking like a fool and cursing. I find my KTM 500 setting in the garage while the BETA is roosting. I never thought I would prefer the 2-stroke, I've been a 4-stroke guy since the WR 426F Yamaha came out, but these New 300's are so good I think I went back to smoking for good again!!
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
+Simply tori and Baby Renee i'm a thumper guy deep down, but they just can't match the smokers for the sort of riding we do now. i'd be stalling everywhere on a four stroke.
@mikerobinson5990
@mikerobinson5990 8 лет назад
+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I thought when the 4 strokes came out with fuel injection all the stalling issues would be gone! But after riding with the 500 and my brother in law has a 350 exc, we both had the same issues with stalling. We worked with our best servicing dealer with no real answer to how to fix the problem. We ride the Tennessee Knockout extreme enduro, and after talking to the pro riders (Kaliub Russell,Taylor Roberts and Jonny Walker) they all said they stall at least 2-3 times in a event on the four stroke. I figure if Factory KTM can't resolve the issue than there is no way us "Gumby Riders" have a chance at solving the problem. So Thats what made me make the switch to a 2-stroke. By the way your videos made me choose the Beta, I have a Beta 300 Trial bike. I found the 14' racing edition slightly used and grabbed it up. So happing I did. The rest of the group try to make fun of the bike but it always seems to make it through the tougher sections while they struggle through them. Thanks for the Videos Barry!!

I find the point of e-bikes taking over off-roading very interesting. But of course you are absolutely right. The fact that you have all the torque and power from the get go and you can't stall it make an e-motor basically perfect for dirt riding. Now to go ahead and make battery and e-motors lighter and batterys last longer.

+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES they do exist down under its just very very few dealers are about and there in the major city's. Here is a link to the dealer locator link: www.zeromotorcycles.com/au/locator you may not be able to do some cross training stuff on them since it deosnt have a clutch (its all about that throttle) but who knows you probably would haft to adjust the power setting with the app but i would so love to see a zero fx bike do some cross training stuff.

+MARK5MAN7170 thanks for the link, it shouldn't need the clutch actually, they try to make a kind of 'clutch' for old school guys on the electric trials bikes but the torque is instant so it's just a case of adapting usually.

+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES ah ok atleast with an electric bike it would teach good throttle control i would love to get the zero fx but the price is way to high. the difference between the 3.3 and the 6.5 is battery size but the only application i can think of where these bikes would shine is hunting dew to the motor being near silent.

I don't have an ATk Just a lowly 300 2t and a 501 thumper. I remember the cannondale though. Carb in the front pioneer right? For the riding I like to do(tight teck to smooth fourth and fifth trails) I use the 300 to smash in a trail then The thumper for the gravy. Clearly four strokes are the best for track riding(easier to ride and less gear changes) but if you want to make a new trail through gnarly woods or up a creek or a hill a 2 stroke just saws it's way through. The ability to steer with the throttle (rear tire) is a lot more present with a two stroke too. Incidentally I just saw a new Jarvis training vid where he's riding a thumper as well as he rides a 2 stroke. Wonder if it's a sponser/marketing thing that keeps him in a two stroke? Who knows.

Great video man! i switched from an old xr250 to a 250 2 stroke Husky and man the difference is unreal. I cant tell you how much more benefits the 2 stroke has from the xr250. But your right, in wide open sections the 2 is annoying cause your constantly ringing the piss out of it. That gets old (fire roads, gravel roads) and i find the 2 stroke is a little scary to jump at the track because of the power glitched (my jetting sucks lol).
@KTMcaptain
@KTMcaptain 7 лет назад
Jacobl Hammonds awesome, compare old 80s tech 4 stroke to a world leader in 2 stroke manufacturing. If you put cams in a 250f, and index them for 12,500 rpm peak power, then that 250f will make more power; and have a rung out powerband(though I did this on a yz250f and the loss of bottom end and mid range torque wasn't that bad to me). The 350f ktm xc (not exc) makes more power than the ktm 250 2 stroke stock for stock (by 1whp). The 350f also has double the rpm where peak torque maintains 90% (3000rpm vs 1500). 2 strokes are great for backflips (oiling from venturi not pump & pickup) and having to drag your bike up a mountain at hare scrambles. Leave a 2 stroke wide open for too long and you'll seize the top end (4 stroke dedicated forced oiling is far superior to misting oil and fuel onto some bearings). Engine braking with a 2 stroke prevents oil from entering the crank and ports and will KO your motor quickly. Too much oil and too little rpm will foul spark plugs with oil residue. Lastly, 4 stroke engines develope power in a smoother more tractful fashion. 2 strokes seem to spin more than a cycling class. Now I love 2 strokes, they're fun as heck, but the riding I love is wide open desert and dunes and 2 strokes die way too quickly in these environments.

I ended up buying a KTM 150XC. Coming off a 450, I was dead set against having a bike with massive power. The 450 was a handful, and I had to exercise careful throttle control at all times, it also makes you lazy cause you can just bog around at any RPM. I feel like the 300's massive torque would also have been excessive in this way. As a C rider with about a year of solid experience I shouldn't have been on a 450, so I'm going back to basics and learning technique on a light nimble small bore.

+nicksonrobert i will say this. We ride two hour hare scrambles here. Fitness is a major benefit and not so much the whole shot. Hare scrambles are more enduring than any long distance run except possibly a marathon. i cannot say as I have never done that but a 5k a harescramble is way worse. physical fitness is a power play when it comes to these races. I would prefer to let the hole shot go but then I get stuck behind slower riders and spend the next 20 minutes weeding around them until I can catch up. Hoping the race this Sunday is different. I chang classes to get in front of the 50+ guys as I know they cannot hear you and one of our riders is 70. Hats off to that guy but i do not want to be the cause of wrecking him.

Why does nobody talk about 4 stroke crank being more reliable with forced oil lubrication versus oil misting of the 2 stroke? My buddy had an rd350 Yamaha that was always being rebuilt. Two strokes love to detonate and ping and the cylinder heads reflect that. To me it is simple. If, more than anything by far, you need to best power at the lowest weight, then get a 2 stroke. Having to lug 20lbs extra (though ktm claims the 300 tpi is only 13lbs lighter than the 500exc) around for 2 hours at erzberg would be a dramatic strain. Otherwise, 4 strokes nearly erase the benefits of a 2 stroke in most other racing disciplines. Ktm gets 45whp out of their 250f, and 48whp out of their 250, so power really isn't even dramatically in the 2 strokes field. Ktm 350f makes 52whp while the 300 makes 51. Though 2 strokes of the same displacement will have higher torque numbers, though it won't be double due to the inefficiency. Torque is a great indicator of efficiency, so if the 250f gets 20 ft lbs them the 250 2 stroke would get 40 ft lbs at the same efficiency. In reality we only see 30 to 40% more torque for their 100% greater theoretical intake volume (250cc every other rotation vs every revolution). This means that a 4 stroke would only need to reach 30 to 40% higher rpm (peak torque) to make the same power as the 2 stroke does (without losing efficiency). 2 strokes are very inefficient. Don't evacuate their exhaust completely, power stroke interrupted by the port opening, oil lowers octane rating, air and fuel on intake go out the exhaust, heavy piston with much more surface area for friction, crank and rod do not get a nice hydraulic film of oil from a forced circuit to glide on, require long strokes to clean out the exhaust for better torque which drastically limits torque multiplication, etc... 2 strokes also have very poor lubrication properties and need total overhauls much quicker, but this is negated for racers that do frequent rebuilds to maintain optimal performance; thus making the 2 stroke better for easier overhauls.
@thrasher2094
@thrasher2094 5 лет назад
250 2 strokes do have dramatically more power than 250fs do. I dont believe for a second that KTMs 250f is making 45hp to the rear wheel. Also their 2 stroke makes about 50 to the read wheel, not 48. But the buggest difference between 250 2 strokes and 4 strokes is that 2 strokes make 10 or more foot pounds of torque more than 250fs. Which can easily be felt when riding. Also 500s only make like 5-10hp more than 450s do but they make about 13 more ft. pounds of torque more. The larger amounts of torque is the reason why 2 strokes feel and are a lot more powerful than 4 strokes of equal CCs

Hehe...i spent one month deciding between rr 300 2016 or waiting for 350 exc 2017. I went for a 2 stroke as I want to get serious with cross training and also found 350 husqvarna, which I tested, too weak (switching from 500 exc with "two brothers" muffler, which made the response instant). 500 is too much bike to handle for all those trials techniques (I cant progress despite trying as the bike is too heavy for stuff like pivot turns etc.) Also noise for the forest tourists was one of the key decision factors - simply 4strokes are either choked and weak or too loud, once they get a good flowy muffler (btw my ears hurt after whole day ride). And in Czech Republic riding in the forests is illegal, while forests are quite full of tourists. They also say 2 stroke does not forgive mistakes and thus is good for learning riding technique, i hope... Will report on the experience - I hope I wont regret :S...

Hi. Keep this to yourself but I bought an old XR200 with (pro-link on each side) and bolted the top end to the bottom end of a maico 490 thus creating a 3 stroke to stop this argument once and for all. It runs on diesel as well so you can get about 300 to the gallon. Let me know if you want one PS its air cooled to save weight and the tank is made of a leather rugby ball so it collapses as fuel level drops. This way you can move your weight way forward. Smart eh?

everyone always says two strokes have more power per cc and they state this as fact but I don't know if thats really true. If you took an average of power made across all RPMS on a four stroke and the average power across the tach on a two stroke which one makes more power? This would be an interesting comparison. I would like to see this but i am too lazy to do it. This is also why I ride a four stroke.

+EnduroRider NW Basically, power = torque x rotational speed. At a given RPM, a 2-stroke, with twice the number of combustion cycles, should have more torque. However, a 4-stroke can generally run at higher RPM.
@RuggedADV
@RuggedADV 8 лет назад
+Braden Riley No it doesn't. Once again it cites power at one spot in the RPM range. Yes the 2 stroke is quicker at that one point in the RPM but what about all the other points in the range. Which one truly has more overall power? The four stroke is making more power through probably 70 percent of the powerband.

+EnduroRider NW not saying either is better just want to see a real overall comparison not just peak HP and Torque. HOw often in the woods are we riding at peak HP?

My problem with 4-strokes isn't so much the technology per se, but all the shady crap that put them back into racing. The whole double-displacement thing was just horseshit, driven by the manufacturers who wanted to push the bikes that make them more money. Sometimes you'll go to a vintage race, and you'll see someone on a built-up TT500 thumper, absolutely laying into all the guys with their lighter and more powerful 500 2-strokes, and I find myself cheering for that guy, because he has the stones to take on the smokers directly. If a 250F is faster than a 125, I'm not impressed by that at all. Fortunately the off-road community, being largely free of displacement classes, is also largely free of the political deck-stacking, so we really do get to see people choose the style of engine that they actually like better. That makes it so much more healthy.

The only 4 stroke I would get is a wr450 and I would only use it as a super moto and I would have a two stroke for the trails

+CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES I have a ktm 200 exc and I love the power of it but I would never take it on the road because it's to much hassle filling it up and I don't wanna get the cops on me because of the loud exhaust and I have heard lots of good things about the wr450 or the ktm 500 and I'm a huge ktm fan and I know how to work on them so I'm sitting on the fence

im a 2 stroke fan all the way, but im an adrenaline junkie "Just hook it to my veins" love that power hit so much but each to thier own, it good to have heaps of choices of bikes out there and who knows when i turn 90, i might have to get a 4t, hehehe

Matthew Albury KTM 500exc-f makes 5 more whp than a cr500... thumper racing 610 kit exhaust and cam makes it a 70whp bike (55whp stock). Ducati makes a 205hp motorcycle, Kawasaki makes a 300hp motorcycle, and ktm makes a 160hp dirt bike. Guess you like the easier grandma bikes. Real men rally liter+ bikes. But hey, when you're 90 those old 15hp xr400s will still be around to calm your nerves. KTM 500excf (62crank hp) and 350xc (58 crank hp) are both more powerful than their 250 & 300, and their 300 makes the same power stock as a cr500 (though not as broad). 2 strokes are great for "feeling" fast at 65mph, while 4 stroke (especially big bore) will cruise at 95mph. Worst thing about 2 strokes, their owners think their bikes are gods gift to humanity... more like gods gift to stunters and hare scramblers... Nough said.

Just a general question for whoever has experience with this but, how do the 2T bikes do on the street? Not looking to ride on the street every day, just here an there sub 10 mile trips on roads that are 50 mph and under.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 8 лет назад
+Sruikyl most of us find them terrible. they don't like sitting on the one cruising speed, they sound as if they are revving so high... it's doable but not much fun. :(

If you are riding from trail to trail you'll be fine. If. You intend to commute or go to the store on one don't bother...

I've got a question. I've been on my cry 230 for a while but am looking to upgrade. I do a lot of bush riding and was thinking the Sherco 250ser. The only problem is the last two stroke I rode was a 65. I'm willing to practice a lot but do you think the sef-r would be a better choice. I want a bike that goes fast but handles relatively well. What do u think?
