I got curious, and looked up what Rasetsu means It's apparently the Japanese word for a Rakshasa, a malevolent creature from Hinduism, known for its ability to take the form of humans, but its true form was a monstrous demon with dark powers... The name is rather apt I must say
It kind of sounds like Buddhist and Hindu chanting, which can sometimes be unsettling depending on the chant. Also kind of sounds like it has some Gregorian chanting influence
Since this got pinned, I'll say more clearly what I'm alluding to in my comment by saying it's rather apt. A rakshasa isn't a person who transforms into a monster, it's a monster that appears as a human, only to reveal its true form when it needs to. In the same vein, Gon is not transforming into a monster in this scene, because Gon is already a monster at this point. He descended into darkness and hate far before this moment. He is no longer the child of light he was at the beginning of this series. His transformation reveals what he truly is at this point, a monster of darkness robbed of his childhood innocence, represented by the adult form. You might say "he's not a monster he's a man" But the chimera ant arc shows us that there is no greater monster than a man consumed by darkness.
@@rice_lovertbf most of that is part of the previous track, Kage, which just means shadow Rasetsu begins at 3:09, which most of the vocals sound more like a choir than chanting, but its still an interesting idea
Both tracks were made for the 2nd movie (released between episodes 110 and 111), where the main antagonist has an ability named Rasetsu that summons a giant demon Nothing to do with Gon unfortunately
Naruto is even darker than this! if you want a happy go lucky Shonen, I would recommend one piece, whose animation is so kiddy that its hard to take seriously even when the story is genuinely vexing!
Killua was never scary, just a bit intimidating in the Heaven's Arena arc. Kurapika definitely was scary, especially when he fought Uvogin. But Gon and Netero still remain the characters that gave me the most goosebumps in the show.
@@gabrielfarkas257 Chrollo was added to that list for me as well once i read Kurapika’s backstory. the things the troupe actually did to the Kurta before killing them are honestly sickening...
@@gabrielfarkas257 I mean. Killua killed 2 people in the hunter exam arc just for the fact that they bumped into him. I thought he would actually become a minor villain later. God was I wrong.

Ging: You should enjoy the little detours :) Gon: *Proceeds to undergo a horrific transformation into a being of power wholly fueled by his rage and sadness while simultaneously being in immeasurable despair for the death of the only father figure he had in his life*
Look at it this way: Killua, a kid who was tortured and trained by his family to be an assassin, and is able to kill people within seconds without even being noticed, seems like an angel compared to Gon in the Chimera Ant arc.
@@Human_traain how? pitou killed his friend, lied to him about his death, and was a monster, so he used all his nen to give him a taste of his own medicine, Gon was no where near a monster
actually he still has the power and mind of a twelve year old but the appearance of a 20 to 30 year old he still has the power of a 12 year old terrifying to think about
Everybody gangsta until the anime protagonist that never killed one person in his life says "i'll kill you" with angry voice while transforming into a jojo character
2:12 This is the moment that this track gave me chills. It happens in the anime as the doors are blown open, candles are blown out, dark aura is filling the room, and a formerly innocent boy becomes so consumed with hatred and rage that he throws away everything to destroy. The atmosphere is palpably harrowing. You can feel that something inhuman has awakened in that room.
The only thing able to suppress your humanity is hatred, revenge, anger, hopelessness, desperation, disgust... all combined together. Or the lack of self-acknowledgement of those traits of your mentality. It's a bumpy road, but it's one that teaches you a lot if you're able to cross.
And Both gained rebirth's after defeating an nearly dying to opponents they completely destroyed. Although one Gain even greater Nen ability and another lost all of his, both only gaining their rebirth's from sacrifices made by those close to them.
It's funny how gon's transformation theme is very ominous compared to other shonen characters who undergo some transformation. Others will have a theme that sounds like it will ensure them victory or inspirational. But look at gons...the complete opposite.
I like that in this arc it was very backwards compared to other anime. Instead of the general "good triumphs over evil" it was more of a "Good becomes evil to triumph". Both Gon and Netero in their last living scenes were depicted with very evil aura and actions being a large contribution to their victories. All the while Meruem is beginning embrace compassion and humanity. Ironically the one trending toward good is the one that dies.
Brian Fuller that was the point, pretty much. Hxh is a response to shonen like dragon ball or naruto, and this reversal of trends and all sorts of formula breaks in hxh are the main reasons why its so fucking amazing.
As someone who just watched this show for the first time, I found this scene to be up there in a list of favorites. It's strange but honestly awesome how we go from Killua lacking any real emotion to having a vibrant spectrum of feeling over the first 70 episodes. And on the opposite end, Gon goes from being a loveable gentle hearted kid to this cold, empty, and malicious husk that only wants the death of an Ant. It sucked so much watching Killua fret and have heartbreak after heartbreak as his friend was hurting more and more. They're both really sweet kids, but they totally reversed their mentalities during this arc.
Gon VS Hanzo- Gon gets a broken arm(right). Gon VS Spinny guy- Gon gets a broken arm(right). Gon VS Genthru- Gon loses right arm. Gon VS Pitou- Gon loses right arm.
Gon is one of the most terrifying characters in anime. And that was before his transformation. He’s so unhinged that it’s scary. If you’re fooled into believing his ‘happy go lucky’ demeanour for too long, you’re clearly watching the wrong show. He’s not a child, he’s a living embodiment of a monster. And this is meant to be our protagonist! This is why HXH is a masterpiece.
He's not a monster and never was, he was just a realistic unprepared 11 year old thrown into the real world. of course he's gonna do what it takes to make sure he and his close friends survive. sure he can be hypocritical, sefish and cruel at times, but thats just how kids are
@@mindlessactor29 He has everything what it takes to be an actual bad villian Nor does he care what he does for his selfishness. Just being 11 is his defence
You are right he doesn’t care what’s wrong or good he literally a monster his reaction to Killua's methods of assassination was strange to a child raised in a good environment. He was fascinated and thought these techniques were great.
@@Cocxy69 And the fact that he watched people and ants die, including watching kite get his arm cut off and then likely sustaining head trauma from being knocked out while tensed up. He also had to travel to kite's body just for pitou to then let him know that he was dead, I'd be unhinged as well. Being 12 isn't his only defense, it's being 12 and gaining all that trauma in a short period of time.
@@djroscurro9859 I think it was more to showcase how strong gon could have been at his peak if he didn't sacrifice his Aura(which was restored by alluka). And i don't think a black and white monster Gon would fit well in the scene with Killua. I know it would have looked much cooler, but i don't think it would fit.
@@obad7633 he didn't really care anymore about his life or anything= he got nothing to lost . The one sliver of hope he was clinging to was that pitou would fix kite , once that was gone he just didn't give a fuck anymore.
The fact that Gon completely lost touch with his human side, and kind of bonded with his evil, dark and monsterous side is horrifying. At this phase, he could annihilate Meruem. No doubt.
Thats wrong bro he was crying because he felt what Kite felt. I dont understand what u mean by Gon lost his humanity. He still was very happy at the end of series
AmateurOtaku Gaming I understand your point. I was specifically referring to the chimera ant arc. As you can probably tell, each episode Meruem became more human. But Gon on the other hand became what Meruem was expected to become, a true monster that doesn‘t have any sympathy for his „opposing side“ what so ever.
Well pre-nuke mereum maybe. But he wouldn't stand a chance against post-nuke mereum where he essentially gets buffed. And we also have to consider the fact that mereum didn't even use his own nen
@@DrKakentraunElPrestoZimbutsu for the post nuke, it will only end in a tie at best for meruem. And Gon here could probably beat meruem if he was his anger source imo
Unfortunately, i doubt he can. Even if he was more powerful than Meruen, Meruem is way smarter too. If they had to fight at that point, Meruem being more emotionally stable and intellegent would win eventually
Hobo Joe Gon is kinda amoral. He always avoided killing regardless of who his opponent was, excluding the two chimera ants he killed, but even then he offered mercy, even though it was a prey fighting predator situation. He doesn't even have issue with the Phantom Troupe outside of their attitude towards the death of their own. But this wasn't self defence. He never gave Pitou a chance to surrender. He fully intended to fight and maybe try to kill Pitou after healing Kite. After he learned she couldn't, he gave in to absolute rage and hate. It's not about whether his actions were "evil". Only antagonists had displayed bloodlust as a physical presence before now, and the fact that the most innocent and carefree character in the show ended up becoming the most bloodthirsty of all is what makes this scene horrifying.
“Demons run when a good man goes to war Night will fall and drown the sun When a good man goes to war Friendship dies and true love lies Night will fall and the dark will rise When a good man goes to war Demons run, but count the cost The battle's won, but the child is lost”
Normally songs of protagonist gaining new powers and abilities sound energetic, upbeat and cheerful. This haunting song sounds more like mourning/funeral of someone. Which makes sense, considering how "anti-super saiyan" Gon's transformation is. Any time character ahieves a new power it's a sign of them gaining something new and becoming better individuals backed by conviction that will drive them even more forward, Gon transformation is anything but that, it's a needless sacrifice that he makes in moment of complete despair and would cost him his life had not Something healed him.
PAAAAWWNNNCH Naruto was also a happy guy with the bright in his face but the rage could turn into a cloak tailed demon. the only diference in both scenes are the colors because the intensity, pain and hatred are there.
a little bit late but when obito transforms into a zetsu after witnessing Rin's death by the hands of kakashi, he just massacred a band of high level ninja horror style. with body parts hanging everywhere making the moon reflect blood.
Maybe not scarier in the normal intimidating sense but their determination to utterly destroy their opponents no matter the cost is scary as hell for sure.
@@JV-pt6ht No no, definitely scarier in some ways. You know, Killua said it himself during Greed Island. He is far worse than the bomber. He killed a lot more in cold blood. Hisoka is one of the only ones who comes close, and his relationship with Gon is special. They are almost more akin to rivals than enemies. Let's look at the main villains of each arc. Exam: Hisoka. Point above. He's insane in some ways, and that's the scariest part about it. He's one of the scariest "villain" of the serie in how chaotic he is, and how obssessed he can get. But we see other sides of him where he can act like a decent person if needed, and seemingly not just in a psychopathic way. He's compared to Gon a lot, and Gon is compared a lot to him. Interesting, right? Saving Killua (and the last anime arc, too): Killua's Family. Unsurprisingly enough, some of the scariest villains we got were Killua relative, who is one of the MCs. Says a lot about our MCs. Silva is creepy, the mom is crazy, and Illumi seemingly inherited both traits. Illumi is either a pure psychopath, or a pure narcissist, and his vision of the world is definitely one in which good is whatever benefits or pleases him, and bad is whatever doesn't. Others are never even an afterthought, and their perspective doesn't exist to him. Almost to the point he seems dumb and not so intimidating. In some ways, he is like Gon if you removed all sorts of empathy/sympathy/protectiveness toward friends from Gon. The Tower: Hisoka & the three clowns. Backstabbing sons of bitches willing to resort to any dirty tactic to permanently cripple newbies in their fighting arena so they can get easy wins and get the top floors, getting the good life. They bet their life on fame and money, it didn't work out well, so now they are playing it safe and dirty, rather than just quitting. Until Killua makes them. Sad in some ways, they are terrible people, but rather than scary or intimidating they come more across as petty than anything. Auction: Spiders Boss. He is calm, collected, and while he is a terrorist and a thief, while he did commit and organize heinous acts, he is ultimately morally consitent, has beliefs, does seem to have the ability to act humanely, was ready to try to explain his ideals to gon rather than outright offing them, and is shown to care about those he feels are his peers, the reason he did the terrorist acts in that act in the first place. Initially they just wanted to steal shit and that's it, Kurapika is the one who went out of his ways to provoke them, even if we can't blame him. Whatever twisted sense of moral, or robinhoodness he may have, he certainly isn't crazy and has seemingly shown that he avoids force unless he deems it necessary for a purpose. He acts almost kind of nerdy in some instances, kind of aloof in some others. It drops him a few steps from the "intimidating" ladder. There's a few members that seem to be worse than him, but not completely hopeless. Feitan and the other blond guy showed some respect toward Gon and Killua at the end. They respected the code they go by, their ways to approach life, and likely their skills for such age aswell. They could have done Pakunoda dirty, but they didn't. Greed Island: Bombers. Assholes? Sure. Murderers? Sure. Willing to do anything to get money, even kill kids? Sure. But that's just greed, not truly evil, not insane evil. Unscrupulous, but not inflicting harm for the sake of it. Even if he wasn't willing to give up, and ready to resort to dirty strategies if he needed to, he still likely would have spared gon if he gave up. He acknowledged Gon as being far more insane than he is, a different kind, presumably refering to how suicidal Gon is. He's shown that he isn't completely selfish when he asks for his partners in crime to get healed, and that he is sane enough to admit defeat when it is wise to. He has this very meek and self reflective attitude at the end. Almost like he could get a change of heart and befriend the MCs. Binolt i started to feel sorry for him by the time he turned himself in. A bit too cliché in some ways. He lost some scariness near the end of that fight. Chimera Ants: Meruem. Do i need to explain anything? It's a being that came into being with god like power, sought a purpose while all of his subjects tried to convince him that he is to dominate the world and human race. He did commit a few horrible things in the search of who he is, what he must do, and what he wants to do. He has been short tempered a few times, and looked down on some humans for reasons that are not excusable, but understandable. Most if not all of his acts were just genuine curiosity, and never malicious intent. He quickly ended coming to term with his ant and human side, and decided that his role was to maintain balance, protect valuable humans and such. After dying, his opinion further progressed into one where he finally respects humanity and admits defeat. He finally understands, and his position is one of the least evil one a character could have by then. Power is to protect the weak. He spends his final moments making a few amends here and there, contemplating a few things, and being by the side of the human he grew fund of, making her happy in the process. The three guards and a few ants were evil, but most of them were too silly crazy, not intimidating, cool, or just a mixed bag. Youpi ends up kinda cool, Flamboyant moth man is too hard to take seriously, and Pitou had the scariest moment... but also seemed kind of pitiful and stoic in the end. Dark Continent: Hard to tell for now, there's a few princes that seem evil, like the fourth, but he's also able to be friendly and almost kind of attached toward those he deems worthy/smart/strong enough. Plus a few other details in his interactions, but we don't know much yet. One thing to really appreciate about this show is that the characters are anything but one dimensional. Most of the non-main villains weren't any worse than the ones above, a lot of them were just ultimately thug wannabes that aren't all that harmful, the few truly evil ones being few and far between.
@@Dice-Z yes that's what I meant for the most part I meant that when people think scary character they usually think scary looking, typical bad person, willing to kill, and powerful. Gon fits the willing the kill bit and powerful but at first he isn't that strong and only with his covenant does he get super strong. Up until that point we are led to believe that Gon is just a normal kid with nen. He ends up showing us that he's willing to go to insane lengths to destroy those he deems worthy of it. He's unstable and maybe evenselfish I'd say. He just does things he thinks are right. He's all of those things and he's just a kid. I think he's like what? 14? When he kills pitou. Hell he was ok until kite died since no one close to him had died. Dude is crazy
This theme alone terrifies me more than any horror movie i've ever seen, that scene is simply a masterpiece, how the most innoccent and kind boy becomes that, when you looked into Gon it was like looking at death itself, really really terrifying, what an amazing scene, and poor Pitou, she sure did some killings but facing Gon in that form.. holy shit, she didn’t deserved that.
This was the saddest moment in this anime for me. Seeing such a pure child change so drastically in such a time span then for it all to come spilling over when and how it did was the hardest thing to watch.
@@Cocxy69 Rewatching it and getting to the appraisal of Zepile helped remind me that people saw his potential as monstrous and that he has no eyes of good or bad just instinct. This is the summation of the animal inside coming out and it is so fucked.
He did something new. Instead of holding back like all the other characters do, slowly building up, Gon didn’t care. Gon didn’t care who died, where, or when. He was putting everything he had into this form simply because of this anger that consumed him slowly. One of the best representations in anime of a complete *SNAP*
I have never seen a face more terrifying and awe-invoking than Gon's face at 3:09. You could say it was his own Malice Aura towards Pitou. I find it extremely difficult to find a scene in any other anime (let alone TV series) where the protagonist makes such a shocking change. The music paces the whole scene perfectly. I have never felt such a feeling in any horror or action movie, either!
The horror as you watch this kind hearted kid turn into a monster....the most intense transformation i have ever witnessed. This wasn't any power of friendship, no "love" here or whatever asspull you wanna bring up. This was pure unadulterated rage spilling over from a kid that completely lost it. Why hunter x hunter is 5x better than other anime. IMO
crazy how this shounen anime with magical powers and mystical beasts and monsters ended up being one of the most realistic animes period. the humanity aspect is absolutely spot on
They all lied to me 1 year ago. Watch hxh they said. It is a light hearted anime they said. *starts watching hxh 1999* *reaches hisoka orgasm scene in hunter exam*
@@JV-pt6ht That's the thing about Gon, he's always been an odd one of the group, his best friend is a master assassin belonging to a family of Elite contract killers, he had treated deaths pretty casually in the past and through his hunter training as well, his morality has always been muddled and grey. He'd choose to do the right thing only until and unless it doesn't effect him or his friends. Also, most hunters he had came across saw him as either a being of limitless potential or a potential monster. This arc truly brought his flaws and madness to the surface, and this scene in particular was RAW and unfiltered, he let his madness reign free. The king and Gon were the two sides of a same coin, one found humanity while the other lost it for revenge. We found out that Gon is not a Hero but an Anti-hero protagonist. Something also I find interesting about Gon, how he doesn't really likes showing weakness, sure he cries to killua about it. but through this arc and this scene when his hand gets cut off he just tells killua that he's okay when we as the audience knows that for Gon it's okay to admit that he's in pain and let killua help him, maybe it's his pride or some deep seeded thing that just doesn't allow him to come across as vulnerable to his own friends. just something I found interesting.
This show throws into a false sense of perception by making you think this is just another happy go lucky anime but when you get to this arc it leaves you speechless By far the best anime I’ve watched (and I’ve watched a LOT of anime)
2:36 to 2:55 This part every time i listen to it give me chills Its like a Hope rises out of the darkness and then you discover that this hope is even darker than darkness itsilf
+Mei Terumi i meant the moment he stabbed himself in the heart and all the texture faded from his face turning his eyes and mouth pitched black and his face resembling a mummified skull i know it doesnt literally turn into a skull and i was just saying thats the moment where i actually shivered been about a year since i saw it so i could be wrong but i think your talking about a different scene
Not saying Gon should've brutalized Pitou here, but first she kills Kite - who is the closest thing to a father that Gon had by then, then turns his body into her personal doll. Uses this body to fight against Gon and co. Tells Gon while in tears that she can heal Kite. Only to tell Gon that she was lying in order to save herself time to heal the King's shogi rival and love interest. And then proceeds to tell Gon that she brought him alone there purposely to kill him. I don't think I'll do what Gon did, but the disgust I will feel at that moment cannot be captured in words. Gon is a 13-14 year old without a well developed moral compass. Sure, what he did there was evil, but Gon himself isn't evil, and I can completely understand him. I don't think Killua is evil either. I actually think he's just a product of his family. As the story develops he reveals himself to be a very kind person.
Umm excuse me, you wouldn't do what Gon did to Pitou? I would have done what he did ten times over dude, what Pitou did was one of the most fucked up things that someone could possibly do to someone else and you're saying his response was evil? Fuck that, Pitou got what she deserved.
Shelby Smith this decision by Gon was suppose to show his imperfection as a character. Young naive kid who's being driven by pure emotion. Amazing writing
+Illuminaughty I am older than Gon was at this point in the story and have experienced a fair bit of life to know enough to hold back. But I guess the real question is if I was Gon's age what would I have done? That I can't tell for sure.
I agree totally this transformation was vastly different from any other anime. You get to see the main protagonist take a different turn in Gon. You just really getting the sense that he is becoming a monster
Tbh, you know that meme where hey say girls aren’t funny? It seems like that’s most of the GUYS on tik tok... Or maybe that’s just a symptom of being in that god awful app
I don't think they mean anything negative by it, yes it's true he lost his humanity but in my opinion, I really liked that side of him. I wanna see more of it. The annoying people are those who dislike Gon because of this, when the anime wouldn't NEARLY be as good if this didn't happen.
This scene should've won some type of anime award if there is one, like god damn the voice acting was incredible, the production of the soundtrack in the background, the atmosphere in the episode, etc. It was put together so well to portray one of the most dramatic changes in a protagonist in any anime.
What many people forget is that gon is just for that one moment so dark but man, this scene shows you that even the most happy people can go crazy scarie
crazy? the most traumatic worst nightmare happeend? he was lied to about being able to be with kite again after the longest journey to save his life, just to find him dead at the end..
Gon's transformation was terrifying, the best out of all the anime I watched and my favourite, if a shounen was able to make me fear the protagonist then it sure is good. (This was a comment written by someone else but I agree with him/her)
