Part of this parish is off limits to the public. It’s a farm, known as Huntwick Grange Farm, named after the farmhouse that accompanies it which you can see in today’s Picture Bit. Even so, it is a Grade II listed farmhouse from the 17th century and was the home of Sir Richard Saltonstall, a member of Massachusetts Bay Company, who emigrated to New England in 1630.
However this doesn’t mean coming here is all for nought. You may like to walk Mill Pond Meadow Commemorative Wood which is right next door, with it’s distinctive “War Horse” sculpture. Regardless, it is the massive Nostell Priory that dominates this episode.
Originally it was owned by The Winns who made their money from the London textile trade during the Tudor period. During the following century the family used their wealth to invest in property and land. This included the Nostell estate, which was bought in 1654. Nostell Priory occupies 121 hectares of parkland. Within the grounds and gardens are lakeside walks. The main facade of the house faces east towards a grass vista.
Foulby is famed for one thing more than anything else, a man who is mentioned a couple of times in this epsiode - John “Longitude” Harrison. A carpenter and clock designer, it was the latter of these which would earn him the nickname. There’s a house here which explains why by way of a blue plaque.
This is a small one in comparison to others in Wakefield but it’s definitely one of the most historic for loads of reasons. This is HUNTWICK WITH FOULBY AND NOSTELL.

HUNTWICK WITH FOULBY AND NOSTELL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - In Mill Pond Meadow there is an abandoned house, right behind the gate

Much of the grounds of Nostell are free to walk round (pay for parking) but some of the grounds are only open if you pay. Coincidentally I used to live near Leeds Bradford airport and would see the air ambulance regularly. I now live not far from Nostell and see it regularly again.

I parked near the Independent School/Village Hall and walked it. No brainer really. With all the walking I do, it was small fry. £5 I believe to use the car park

Interesting that John Harrison was born in Foulby. I didn’t know this before.

Wragby Church is certainly not redundant. It's in the Ecclesiastical CofE Parish of Wragby which includes the Church of the Resurrection at Kinsley to the South. The special thing about that church at Wragby is the stained glass windows. They came from Switzerland. I believe it was the Winn family that brought them over. There is information about this in the church. The church functioned as the private chapel of the Winns for a time and Wragby was where most of the Estate's workforce lived at that time. I believe the village remains largely in the hands of the Estate even now. The company is called Nostell Estates Limited and also owns most of not only Nostell and Wragby but Hessle and Hill Top and West Hardwick as well.

As I said in the video, I only thought it was beforehand...pleasant surprise as a result!

Also in next weeks Hemsworth video, the Church of the Resurrection does feature in the Picture Bit. Now - my information told me that it's Fitzwilliam as opposed to Kinsley. Personally I think its between the two looking at the map. Hence why the caption will say "Between Fitzwilliam and Kinsley". Also earlier in the video, I say in commentary that Kinsley has no church, "as far as I can tell on the map" to cover that both ways! Although I am aware of the old church near Hemsworth Water Park 😁

@@TheVillageIdiot yes you did. Hope the other information is useful. You did say you thought there was something special about the church but couldn't put your finger on it. Follow your gut instinct. It's rarely wrong 😊😊

@@TheVillageIdiot it is in Fitzwilliam just. However most people consider it to be in Kinsley probably because of the housing estate behind it to the west which links into the Tonbridge estate and forms a big part of the residential area of Kinsley. I think the way you have handled it sounds balanced. Good stuff.
