US President Joe Biden has said Hurricane Ian could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history following devastation across the state.
The hurricane made landfall on Wednesday near the city of Fort Myers and brought severe flooding, high winds and storm surges.
More than 2.6 million Florida homes and businesses have no electricity and some areas have been left submerged.

I know the Amish go down to help out - After the hurricane in 2008 I was driving across the state and got a flat tire on my van from the road debris - immediately a truck pulled up and 5 Amish guys got out and helped me change my tire then led me to a place I could buy a new tire - the man driving them said yes, the Amish had been in Florida helping to put new roofs on homes, they were from Lancaster , Pa

@@marilynwade7136 We had a 3 year old, a newborn, & 2 big dogs in 08 when Ike hit. After our disastrous attempt to evacuate Rita...when people were dying on Houston freeways...we stayed. In Ike we sheltered 6 family members (1 on home dialysis), 4 extra dogs & 12 of my aunts cats (don't ask). We lost half of our roof and water poured in the house. It was a NIGHTMARE!! No power for 16 DAYS!! I took the kids to Dallas on day 3. My husband stayed to protect all of our property. We were out of our home from September to January getting repairs. I have so much sympathy for people living through natural disasters. It is traumatizing. Poor, elderly & disabled suffer greatly. People don't understand that if you don't pull cash out you're in a bad position. NO POWER. BANKS CLOSED. You can't use the ATM or debit cards at stores that happen to be open. It's a mess. People were dying in standstill traffic. During the unprecedented flooding of Harvey, officials didn't even evacuate because the area affected was so massive. There was no way to evacuate that huge population of people. We were all trapped. It is expensive to evacuate. Low income families can't afford it. Nowadays, NO ONE can truly afford it. @alicehaslonghair
@alicehaslonghair Год назад
Alligators won't be too bad once the water levels go back down. If you leave them alone, they usually leave you alone. The main thing that will be worrisome is getting enough volunteers out there to help get everything gutted and debris cleaned up as quickly as possible in this first month after the storm. With all that water coming into homes, it's not safe after the first month for volunteers to help with clean up (the mold sets in at dangerous levels after that point and you habe to hire someone to do it). Insurance is going to put them all through the ringer too. Two years after Hurricanes Laura and Delta here in Southwest Louisiana, and we still have people and businesses who aren't getting money owed by their insurance, let alone the money the government is supposedly sending for those lower income families that insurance stiffed. Honestly, just getting as many people there with their own chainsaws, food, gloves, tents, etc. (there won't be power or useable running water too probably here for a month or more) as possible to help them will go a long way towards recovery.

Please make a correction to your report. NOAA personnel are NOT storm hunters. They are with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and their job is to gather real time data in order to save lives. These are not "storm hunter" cowboys endangering lives for thrills.
@ABC1701A
@ABC1701A Год назад
So do they ''hunt'' for storms in order to gather this data as it happens or do they sit at a distance and use satellite imagery and other information. If it's the former then they are ''storm hunters'' (who DO NOT have to be cowboys and are often from universities) gathering information as it happens in order to use to hopefully save lives in the future.

And there are always a few deaths from the power outage too with some people not setting up their generators improperly. Always an unfortunate side effect with these storms. Truly a beast of a storm y'all were pounded with.

The next time the State you live in calls for an evacuation one week ahead of time then evacuate. The Feds should provide FEMA monies proactively so that people can secure their homes and move to higher ground. It is horrible to have a person who survived the storm to end up drowned in post storm flood waters. Deaths could be avoided.
@macklong239
@macklong239 Год назад
In Cape Coral we were only told to evacuate once the Hurricane was already on us. I have never heard a weather man say “The hurricane is here, it’s bad, to ensure your survival you must leave now.” The winds were already 60-70 mph. At that point it was either risk your life fleeing or risk your life staying. If they were to evacuate an entire week ahead of a hurricane, where would we all go? They were talking about it going anywhere from Alabama to Key West. That’s a lot of evacuees Aeri.

Relocate where? To Tornado Alley? Earthquake country? The increasing number of wildfire ridden areas? Drought stricken areas? Blizzard prone places once winter arrives? The entire east coast of the U.S. is in some hurricane's crosshairs. A huge portion of the center of the country gets devastating tornadoes. The west is full of drought stricken forests succumbing to wildfires, potential earthquakes, even the occasional volcano. Winters are getting colder and summers are getting hotter in places where they've never had to prepare for such extremes. Where do you suggest that everyone in a flood zone or any of the other dangerous places go?

This is the 2nd time a major hurricane was heading straight for Tampa, home of U.S. Central Command and Special Ops and the nation's largest fleet of KC-135 stratotankers, when suddenly it makes an uncharacteristic change in direction and misses the base by just enough distance to insure there is no major damage. Im beginning to think living near this base provides a certain amount of protection from natural disasters.
