He's not kidding about the safety issue. I got tagged by an airless with the tip flipped to jet while clearing a clog. Thank goodness it was latex paint because during the half second or so my finger was in the stream it forced paint through the skin, muscle and tendons and painted the bones. My finger literally filled up with paint internally. I ended up requiring surgery and spending a week in the hospital. Then it was rehab and all that. I've never gotten the mobility, strength or accuracy in my hand back to where it was before the accident and I lost almost 2 months of work too. I'm never going to have the feeling, strength or dexterity that I did previously but it's OK because it could have been even worse Had the paint been oil based my finger would have required amputation. As it was they had to cut all the meat off the bone to wash it out clean paint off the tendons and out of the joints. I now use a tough leather glove on my support hand whenever I adjust the tip, fiddle with the gun itself or I'm cleaning it. Turning the machine off does nothing to protect you since they can hold FULL pressure (thousands of PSI potentially) at the gun indefinitely and you have no way to look at a sprayer and know that it's safe. Treat it like an actual firearm. The injuries are treated as such by doctors due to the damage being so similar to gunshots. It's called a High-Pressure Injection injury AKA "The Liquid Bullet". In addition to the trauma cause by the pressure the type of chemical being sprayed plays a major role in the damage. Oil based product injuries will require amputation almost every time while water based amputation is still 2/3rds of the time it's better than always.

definitely wasn't aware pressure was so high... air pressure over 100psi can supposedly push air thru skin and into the blood stream and kill you... so several thousand psi equals bad...

From what I've seen with HVLP guns , the fact that you have to make twice as many passes means you aren't really saving that much more material plus you increase the chances of tiger striping on metallics .

1) Do you trigger the gun on and off at the beginning and end of each stroke? 2) Do you keep the gun the same distance from the part while spraying or do you 'fan' the gun? For spraying a cabinet door as an example. Thanks.
@eytrix
@eytrix 4 года назад
1) Technically, you keep the gun active, and moving the entire time. If you keep throttling it on and off, you risk wasting paint, and also hitting your project with splatter. 2) you absolutely keep the gun equal distance (to the best of your ability) from the entirety of your project...

Excellent video? Does an HVLP with more stages, (2 stage vs. 4 stage), offer better transfer efficiency with less overspray? Located near Philly!
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo 6 лет назад
Thomas Kalinoski thanks for the question hvlp turbines with more stages will offer a bit better performance especially with thicker coatings ect because it will provide more air volume which keeps the unit working less hard or in the case of thick coatings better ability to break up the coating stages will not improve transfer efficiency

I have never used any of these 3 types of paint sprayers before. I only used the one in spray cans. Which one should I buy if I want to paint a cabinet and would want to achieve similar smoothness of a car paint? Should I buy the one with air compressor, or the one without air compressor? What do you call the one with air compressor? (HVLP, or conventional?) Thanks in advance for any help.

If you don't have a compressor that delivers 15 cfm I would recommend a 4 or 5 stage turbine it will allow you to spray smooth finishes

Maybe someone will help me with this scenario. I have a wagner 350m (airless system) but I am a little disappointed with the power of this device, I have to dilute the paint a lot (more than 15%) to get something out. I have to paint my house (150m2) and maybe "mopping wall" and I was wondering if I could not use my 150 liters compressor with a pressure pot and HVLP gun? Is it a good idea? Is it a valid solution? Thank you for your answers
@Quickdrawmcgraw357
@Quickdrawmcgraw357 4 месяца назад
I would get something like a graco 390 PC it’ll be cheaper than a pressure pot setup and atomize thicker paints easily without needing to thin. HVLP is great for fine finish work, but besides a large compressor you’ll also need a dryer to deal with the moisture put off by the compressor. With the proper airless spray tip you can achieve quite a good finish IMO. Airless is also much quicker but waste a bit more paint. There’s caveats to both but for your application I think airless would suit you perfectly 👍. Happy painting!
@dtrrtd774
@dtrrtd774 6 лет назад
I have a simpler turbine HVLP sprayer that apparently has no adjustment for air pressure; is that normally a critical adjustment to tailor it to the specific painting situation? The air volume is pretty high all the time so it's not much like an airbrush where you could control both the air pressure and the paint delivery volume
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo 6 лет назад
Hi controlling air pressure with HVLP is not as critical but you will be limited to thin to medium paint usually if your trying to spray anything thicker you typically need to be able to use higher air pressure than a hvlp turbine can provide which is where a conventional spray gun and compressor or airless would make sense
@eytrix
@eytrix 4 года назад
an hvlp without air pressure adjustment is virtually worthless imo.

With regards to a system like the apollo pro spray 1500 hvlp, could you increase the tip size in order to spray the likes of upol raptor bed liner? For example do you think a 2.8mm tip could work?
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo 6 лет назад
Hi generally bed liner is too thick for a hvlp spray gun but that material states it can be applied hvlp so it may work with the Apollo unit if its a 5 stage, less it may be limited. A 2.8 would probably be the most likely to work or atleast a 1.8.

I'm going to be restoring an old smoker pit with rustoleum high heat paint. The paint is very thin, almost watery, so I don't think any thinning will be required. Which type of gun would you recommend for this project?
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo 6 лет назад
Hi Sean if you have a compressor I would suggest a Binks 2100 spray gun it will spray about anything well with a 1.4 tip that would be a pressure feed gun the other option you could consider is the Devilbiss FLG 4

around 3:00 you said you cant use a fine finish with an airless? You sure can! I use 210, 310 and 410 fine finish tips with my Titan to spray primers and latex lto do trim, cabinets and casings all the time. looking at trying the HVLP machines just to reduce lacquer over spray as it stinks a house out so bad. what I use now though is just an Impact airless with a 2-413 tip for precat.
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo
@PittsburghSprayEquipmentCo 7 лет назад
Surfopia what was meant is that you typically get a bit of a coarser finish with an airless. Even if you use a fine finish tip you will have a slightly less fine finish than achieved with an air spray gun. That is why air spray guns are used for automotive painting. That being said fine finish airless can be perfect for a lot of applications especially for wood finishes as you don't necessarily need a "class a" (automotive finish) to have a good result in the end.

I always thought HVLP was a whole system of hardware, like the gun and the turbine - but you seem to be implying that it is just a gun type that can be hooked up to any old air compressor (albeit with the caveat that it needs to be able to maintain a minimum CFM for an extended time). Have I been thinking wrongly this whole time?

if your walls are textured, you will never notice a roller nap texture compared to a sprayer on interior walls; it matters most on raw wood materials. Also, hvlp is specifically for raw wood scenarios (i.e. cabinets, doors, trim, moulding). Typically, we only airless walls in unfurnished/giant interior housing projects.

How many homeowners have compressors that put out 20 cfm,,,it would have to be 2 stage,,,so the hvlp guns would be not a good choice,,but would give you the best finish,,,great!! Because my new compressor is 13 cfm at 40 psi,,,,and was 800 dollars,,,would have to pay 1200 for a 2 stage compressor..

I don’t recommend airless for anything that needs a fine finish. Automotive, millwork and cabinetry do not use an airless, stick with hvlp. You will waste gallons of paint as overspray if you take on large projects with an airless and it will cost you and the customer. Airless is only good for walls and ceilings and even then hvlp with a large pressure pot setup would still do it better.
