Wow...you nailed! I like to watch your reactions to Hwasa bcs you're always so meticulous with your sharp observations! Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the first Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.

I remember wanting to cry when I listened to Maria back then. It just hurts so much that she has to write such a song, and all the imagery in the MV doesn't help. You need to listen to LMM too. That one will make you cry.

I'm like 98% sure that the opening scene is indeed based on what you said it reminded you of. I love this song a lot and the music video is very sad when you watch it in depth because it showcases Hwasa's struggles with being an idol and dealing with internet hate and trolls. Okay, so I just need to resign myself to the fact that I'm gonna have to watch everything you ever upload. This is brilliant! I absolutely adore Hwasa...I don't go that way but she makes me sweat and seriously question everything about my life. would love to see you react to LMM by Hwasa it is a stunning masterpiece and one of my favourite Hwasa songs, i get goose bumps EVERY time i hear it like every single time!

Because hwasa is the stage hyejin and maria is hyejin in her own self. So the strong hwasa (the stage one) just telling maria (which is the real hyejin) that she doesn’t need to struggle with the insecurities because she is already beautiful. This song still is my favorite hwasa song. The deep meaning itself is impeccable but with the catchy beat as well makes it perfect.

One thing that I hope you keep in mind with these alternate lyrics is that the ones on the screen are done by the company, and they have access to the artist/songwriter to determine the most exact translation. That doesn't mean that they're always right, but I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt. The "starry night" I think is a reference to Van Gogh's most famous painting "Starry Night". He was a tortured soul who was not recognized in his time and eventually committed suicide because he felt he was not understood. The video seems to state that she feels the same but has found a way to deal with it. I've noticed that, over the past few years, that more and more Idols/groups are coming out with VERY pointed songs addressing the hate. There have been a number of Idols/trainees who have committed suicide, and the rest have to deal with this as well. I'd hope that Hwa Sa and the rest of those being hated on for their looks or body type realized that there are literally MILLIONS of people who would give anything to be with someone like them. They have success and fans, and the haters have nothing but hate. A fantastic video, and a great reaction. It's just sad that this type of song even has to be written.

The scene where she is holding the knife represents some moments in her life when she is alone she did feels so depress to that extend. But you can see at the same setting, at the end Mamamoo shows up which has save her life and it indicates a happy ending for this Maria. You've noticed the same dress in I'm a B because that MV represent the bad ending of this Maria. Where Mamamoo didn't show up and she choose to end her life and I'm a B is the world/universe she is in.

Just think, there are AT LEAST THREE versions of this person. Ahn Hye-jin is her Birth name (of course the family name is Ahn so her personal name is Hye-jin). Then there is her Baptismal name, Maria. Then there is her Stage name, Hwasa. And who knows how many other names she could think up for herself if she felt like it? These are just the three versions that we know of but then there is also the HIP Music Video where there are four different universes (in one of them, she was President and STILL caught shit for what she was wearing at the airport!). Life is complicated. I have nothing but the utmost respect for her. :)

Nice commentary, very good interpretation and you're the only person I know of who nailed the Malena reference without being told about it. Yes, the dress she wears at the end of Maria is the one she is wearing at the beginning of I'm a B when the Maria who committed suicide is reborn in a groaner of a visual pun where she's ejected from a "box" along with gallons of amniotic fluid. My opinion anyway. If you want to learn more about the Korean word play in Maria watch the explanation video by David Kim of DKDK-TV. Highly recommended. You MUST watch the MV for LMM next. It's the bookend song to Maria and the final song on the digital version of the Maria album (Twit is included as a bonus track on the cd). LMM = Lost My Mind. It's a different look at her mental struggle while dealing with all the hate. Imo Maria was the most impactful song of 2020, LMM was my pick for song of the year, and the Maria album was album of the year. The MV for LMM is just as gorgeous, epic and cinematic as the song.

Hwasa's solos are so good!! Her solo debut was "Twit" which is a bit more fun/catchy. "LMM" is a ballad that was released on the same album as Maria. One of my personal favorites of hers though is "Be Calm" which is a song she wrote after her uncle died.

Throughout the black hair vs red hair is intended to represent two sides of her. The black hair more hard edged defenses up against the world the red hair a more emotional vulnerable side. The opening death scene you'll note the move marque velvet ropes all the photographers struggling to see the drama of her death. Then at the funeral no one is there and the chairs are turned away no one actually cares about her as a person. Then the morgue scene the paparazzi pawing through various ephemera but no one interested in her offering her heart. Later the hoods symbolyzing the anonymous internet commenters. When she picks up the crown of nails her fingers are stained with ink. In order to create her art there is both the pain and the glory. I believe that her back did not go out until after the MV shooting. She had to go through the promotions and do the live stages with the back injury. You can occasionally catch a glimpse of the pain patch on her back there but it did not stop her from giving her all. For me the most powerful line is the "You want to see me cry? Here you go, tears".

I love your viewpoints and interpretations of videos and lyrics, it makes me happy to see people pay attention to lyrics and give them the appreciation and attention they deserve My personal interpretation of the crown is that in the public eye as an idol, she is seen as royalty and of high power. She has even gained the nickname "Queen Hwasa" and has talked about it in the past. The crown being made of nails represents that power comes with lots of pain, and that although she is incredibly successful, her life is not going to be easy as now she is in the public eye for thousands to see and harass. Her status directly brings her pain, showing how hard idols have it since the whole world is watching and criticizing every move they make. That's what I took away from that scene

i already talk a lot on patreon about MAMAMOO and HWASA and how i love them but the hate about HWASA as to reason in my opinion one is a bullshit 1 she's beautiful and we don't care about her fit if she's a little bit chubby etc... it's bullshit and in korea we have to make serious progress about that typê of comment . another one reason than i can agree with is 2 her outfit . we are a very conservative people we think than idol don't need to be provocative or half naked to be pretty or sexy it's only a question of personality . yes she got lot of harsh comment for her outfit because in MAMa for exemple she doesn't feel confortable with her outfit she constently try to fix it . and even if i understand than western people rise by very provocative artist like lady gaga , rihana , cardi b , megan thee stallion etcc think than it's not a big deal for us it's a big deal . Starry Night is a song by Mamamoo, but also Hwasa loves to look at the stars. She sometimes goes on late night drives, out of the city, to view the stars. Not sure which she meant, but I also think it could be referring to that.
