Mike Copeland of Arrington Performance has been around the auto industry a long time. 25 years at General Motors doing special projects Mike has gathered the connections to create the worlds first functional Hydrogen powered Chevrolet LS Swap that has passed the EPA testing! This truck sounds and drives exactly like a conventional gasoline powered hot rod but with zero C02 emissions! Many naysayers have given Hydrogen bad press but that did not deter Mike and his friends at Bosch from doing the R&D to figure out this package. Someday in the near future you will be able to convert your existing vehicle to renewable Hydrogen power! Mike explains to us how that will be possible in this video!

As a GM technician and ASE certified master technician that was also my favorite part in this video and thats saying something. The ingenuity and calculations it must have taken to build this is insane. We have a saying as techs that "technicians are the people who fix the problems engineers create". So seeing what this man has accomplished is kind of like witnessing a "piece de resistance" in our lifetime right in front of us. This is a original and amazing truck/fuel system but sadly not groundbreaking. I hope he remembers the fiero that ran on water and the outcome of that technician/engineer, the car, and all the papers that showed how to vaporize the water to separate the oxygen from the hydrogen fuel source. When he couldn't be bought out by the big petroleum corporations he simply vanished along with every bit of his research and development on the fiero. Be careful with this technology! There are a lot of people that stand to lose very large fortunes and have shown that they can get away with silencing creative ideas that threaten their way of life already.

@@hornpub6937 That's funny !!!! Do some research !!!!! It IS the oil companies that are investing into it - especially since the most viable source for hydrogen is methane. Shell did huge investments in hydrogen in Europe, and have since pulled out, since, as Neojhun said, the cost and resources to distribute and store that much hydrogen is economically unfeasible, not to mention the energy input required to "produce" the hydrogen in the first place makes it a "not so clean" fuel. As well, like biodeisel, hydrogen engines don't function well at all anywhere that gets close to or below freezing temps. Look at Germany. They invested billions of dollars into hydrogen tech, and have shut it all down due to the many problems with it.

I’ve had a personal belief that hydrogen is the future for the past 20 years and still fervently believe it is, but always thought you would have to dilute it to make it work with existing technology - or “dirty it”, as I say. However, after seeing so much experimentation and testing on the subject with small engines, I started to realize we didn’t need to beef up engines to make it work. Pure hydrogen can run on any engine, provided enough supply and metered correctly for the application. This video makes me firmly believe we are on the way. It is going to happen someday. I just hope I am around to see it become the norm.

I cannot believe how easy it is to manipulate Americans, and how poorly informed the American people are. This engine is a nice hobby project, kudo's for the craftsmanship and all that, but that is as far as it will go for all the obvious reasons. Internal combustion engines are going to be illegal by law to sell after 2035 in Europe and the rest of the continents, regardless what fuel it burns. Those laws have already been passed. And nobody is going to reverse that. The reason is simple. An internal combustion engine wastes at least 70% of its fuel to heat regardless what fuel it burns. And that is simply too much waste. It takes a lot of energy and money to produce that hydrogen. And producing all that hydrogen is only cost effective if it is used more efficiently. And for car manufacturers it is not cost effective to keep developing two different technologies at the same time. And since ICE technology is going to be banned completely in Europe and the other continents it makes no sense to keep developing new ICE technology. So that is the reason why ALL the major car manufacturers in the world, including the Americans, have already announced that they completely stopped investing in new ICE technology and they are only investing in new electric cars and trucks. And you can check this for yourself really easy.

@@horsefly1020 You choose not to be willing to see the change, it is simple as that. But your choice has nothing to do with reality. There is plenty enough verifiable and credible information out there about this subject, but strangely enough people like you seem to think that if you just refuse to inform yourself that nothing is going to change. But the change is already happening all around you buddy, regardless if you are aware of it, or if you are willing to accept it. Look, it is not my personal opinion, and it is most certainly not a contest, I am just notifying you about the facts. What I say are the verifiable facts from the car manufacturers themselves, the laws that have already been passed, investments that have already been made in electric car technology and infrastructure, and so forth. Those are very long term investments with very long term planning, and investment groups have already put far too much money into it, and we are talking about billions if not trillions of collars. And a couple of American displacement replacement deniers on social media are not going to flip all those investors and let them take their losses for their investments to which they are already committed. Here in Europe we are way ahead of the US when it comes to infrastructure and renewable energy sources. But if what you are saying is true then it should be easy for you to show me a single announcement or publication from a credible source about a major car manufacturer who is going to produce cars for the mass of the people powered with ICE technology and with the objective to sell it after 2035. I dare you !!! And I am not interested in your emotions or any other sort of misplaced bluff, because that is not going to change reality either. @insAneTunA
@insAneTunA 10 месяцев назад
@@Stapleton42 Here we go again. You are only reading half of their announcement. 🤣😂Allow me to school You. Despite its goal of an all battery electric vehicle portfolio by 2035, General Motors Co. announced Friday almost a billion dollars in new manufacturing investments-most of which is related to production of new internal combustion engines. (it is a manufacturing investment in their latest existing engines, not a new development investment for a new model engine, those are two completely different things) For GM, the additional investments to bolster internal combustion engines are aimed at supporting its new line of pickup trucks and SUVs. Those are the automaker's main profitmakers, providing cash and capital the company can use to develop the company's future battery-electric cars and trucks. So let me explain this. This is not a long term investment in new ICE development, but it is an investment in the production of existing old technology. Those are their latest engines with no new developments. Do you understand that? And the profit that they are going to make with those last ICE cars and trucks is going to be used to develop and produce and sell electric cars and trucks after 2035. Like I said, they still have some existing projects running, and that will slowly fase out. After all they still have 12 years to go. And as soon as the kalender says that it is 2035 even GM will only sell electric cars and trucks. The engines that they are going to produce will be their last internal combustion engine. And the pickup trucks and SUV's are mainly sold in the US. It is not even meant for export. You should not be doing this, I mean you should not try to fool or mislead other people or yourself by telling only half the story or by ignoring the full truth and most important facts of the story. Because stories like this can be verified in mere milliseconds. And now it looks as if you are making a fool out of yourself. And you can only blame yourself for that. Because it is most certainly not my intention. I just want to make sure that people are aware of the facts. I like your history videos, stick with that. Talking about the future is not your strength.

@@insAneTunA until there are cleaner solutions for electricity, it's a big step sideways. If this push for electric was about the environment, they would ask people to keep their current car as long as possible, or provide government programs to assist people in fixing a current car, instead of pushing the idea of buying something else entirely out of most people's budget. Would cut down on manufacturing emissions, toxic batteries being built, VOC from everything in the manufacturing process. History being rehashed is more accurate. The H2H was an experiment in exactly this 20 years ago...and it failed for the reasons I've posted elsewhere - energy in to energy out just won't cut it. It takes 50kWh of electricity to generate 8.4kWh at the wheels (not quite 14hp for an hour or 55hp for 15 minutes). If we could produce hydrogen closer to the 33kWh of energy it can hold per kg *and* have some sort of combustion engine which is more than double what the theoretical "perfect" piston engine could ever be and it would start getting close to EV efficiency. It's just not a viable option for most use cases. Old hotrods and maybe some racing? Potentially...but for short sprints like drag racing I forsee electric motors and lightweight capacitor banks.

@online247365
@online247365 10 месяцев назад
You can't smell those buses because they are EVs! The big difference between that bus (and many like it across the country, particularly here in CA) and Mike's truck is like night & day though; hydrogen-powered public transportation buses are actually electric motor powered (think Tesla EVs) buses that use hydrogen fuel fed into a very expensive fuel cell stack (usually P.E.M. or Proton Exchange Membrane) converts it into electricity to power the electric motor(s). By contrast, Mike is directly fueling a “standard" (though high performance built) internal combustion engine in place of gasoline. Mike's method is not only much simpler but can also be employed much more affordably if that is the goal. Clearly, in Mike's case, performance was the goal and low emissions are a happy byproduct of his fuel choice. It's a win-win but VERY different from the buses that are essentially extremely expensive EVs that have highly complex systems (regenerative brakes), expensive components (electric motors & batteries), require a LOT of maintenance, and the fuel cells use costly rare metals (ie. Platinum) that also wear out and the stack has to be rebuilt fairly often, and of course you have to mine the earth for a LOT of the things that go on to making the components. They are an excellent way to waste taxpayer money while acting/feeling like they're “helping the planet". Meanwhile, Mike's super sweet hotrod actually DOES benefit the planet by not only being able to use a clean fuel source but also by actively cleaning the air that it pulls into the motor and outputting even cleaner air out the tailpipe! 👍🏻

Since I've been called out, I should at least respond! I never said hydrogen doesn't work. In fact, I explained *how* it does work, from a combustion standpoint. I have many videos explaining this. I also explained why I don't think hydrogen combustion will be adopted in the practical world (it's the tank size problem for gaseous hydrogen; for example, the tank in this video 116L at 5,000 PSI, will hold roughly 2.5-3 kg of hydrogen, or the equivalent energy of about 3 gallons of gas - not enough for long distances). It's fine to say I'm wrong, but, in the spirit of trying to find a genuine technology leap, you have to be honest. What, specifically, have I said in my videos that wasn't correct? I'm all for objectivity and putting out accurate information - if I'm wrong, I'll happily provide a corrected video. This truck build is awesome, full stop. At the same time, there are many reasons why we don't see it in production cars. I'd be happy to collaborate on the subject, and it'd be awesome to chat with you and Mike Copeland. (FYI - completely unrelated and coincidental, I'll have another video this Friday, 8/11, discussing liquid hydrogen combustion engines, since Toyota recently developed theirs).

It is not only the size of the tanks it is also the problem with sealing the tanks. Hydrogen will essentially "seep" out of a steel or aluminum tank because the hydrogen atoms can actually migrate through the metal and it will change the properties of the metal as it does so. The tanks need to be made of spun carbon fiber and then need a specialized liner inside the tanks. Cell companies found this out when they tried to replace generators at cell sites with fuel cells. Hydrogen tanks are not something a do-it-your-self garage mechanic should mess with.

Everyone has been working on hydrogen-powered vehicles since the 1980s. The two reasons we have battery-powered EVs is harvesting hydrogen is very expensive & it costs more energy to harvest hydrogen than the hydrogen itself produces. Think of it like this: Option A: You can go into a bank and ask them to sell you a $5 note for $10, then you can take your new $5 to a store to buy stuff. Option B: you skip the bank. You go straight to the store with your $10 and buy twice as much stuff while creating twice as much litter. Which option are you going to pick?

Stapleton42 - Awesome stuff - Great to see Lake Speed again. Enjoyed your time in New Zealand. So good to see this progress. I recently watched in Australia ammonia being transferred to hydrogen on the fly! This is the next stage. Pressure then is around 150psi (think propane). Then you can use our flat conformable GM Holden approved propane alumimium fuel cell tank! Remember the Foose Mothers Propane Chevelle that had our tank installed. Now you have filling time of gasoline, including the range, packaging and low pressure. The future is very bright indeed for us hot rodders.

I'm glad you asked this question about filling stations at home 24:17 This will be a game changer when this happens. If I can refill 3 kilograms of H2 overnight, is that even doable from home? How much power would that draw? Could you "plug in" your garden hose or would you have to use natural gas? This is the future. I hope more people like Mike Copeland keep tinkering with this technology! Eventually we'll have a Mr. Fusion strapped to our DeLorean. Keep this content coming! ⚛

It is not getting coverage because it will fail, not technically, but economically. Fossil fuel hydrogen is $15 a gallon. Green hydrogen, even more expensive. BM W did it already and didn't continue for good reason.

@@LawrenceRhodesIt's because the industry has a massive conflict of interest adopting something so much better. Not because it will fail. You're proclaiming failure of something completely out of context of the development cycle.
@LawrenceRhodes
@LawrenceRhodes 9 месяцев назад
@mdemers767 Not in this case. Due to hydrogen inefficiency and high cost, which only a few gearheads want to pay, it will never be accepted by the public. It costs pennies per mile in a Tesla. Do the math yourself. There's a reason you can get an off lease FCV for $15k with a $15k fuel card. Burning it in ICE at 10 mpg. Financial suicide. It seems you haven't done the math. The only way it even half assidly will work is if you have abundant hydrogen at low cost. Not in the cards. I would look to ethanol for fun race days.
@squirts1

It's not an "old school v8" by any stretch of the imagination.... and that future will never exist... because a carbureted v8 (old school) cannot run on hydrogen. Guy basically said as much in the video when he mentioned someone asking him if he could introduce hydrogen into the intake on one... it doesn't work that way.

Bravo. This tech can be a splinter of mainstream in its whole new mindset platform. As a rolling platform, the Lung and bung has to be focus one.

Unfortunately for this technology the following numbers are set in stone ; 1kg of hydrogen = 1g of gas as for as energy content The ICE hydrogen engine is pretty close to the ICE gas engine as far as efficiency. So if he went 300 miles on his 3kg tank it wasn’t in this universe.

Great video. Read about Mike over the years and he is respected as legendary. I have long been a fan of hydrogen, it's abundant and as near a perfect fuel as any. The naysayers always seem to refer to hydrogen electrolosis production as if it were some kind of "perpetual motion" scheme but I see it as similar to drilling for petroleum; you expend energy to drill the well, you expend energy to pump it out of the ground, you expend energy to transport it and pipe it, and you expend energy to frack it, process it and deliver it. In hydogen electrolosis you expend energy to extract it from water. The conundrum is getting the right catalyst and process to cost effective ratios. Too many naysayers. I say we need more "can doers"!
