I literally just saw a TikTok video of an English teacher in Korea. She was playing a video and one of the students making fun of the black character. He called her and alien and kept saying “I’m scared”, also saying that N word pretending he was just singing a song. She was upset and asked to talk to the student after class. The coteacher who was supposed to translate what she was saying but instead told the student “Americans are very sensitive, but you didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t worry.” Like the fact that the coteacher teaching children does not think that it’s wrong!!??? Thankfully she realized what the coteacher translated and explained to the student why it was wrong. She said the coteacher apologized and was embarrassed because he didn’t realize that she understood him undermining her. She said she talked to her coteacher about racism afterwards. The fact that the coteacher would even suggest that it’s because Americans are sensitive instead of a real issue is disturbing!

Kennie's just absolute shredding of the "they didn't know any better" argument, anti-blackness in Asian communities abroad at least, and cultural appropriation in pop culture nowadays was a WORD. As someone who is studying Asia, giving their whole career to study Japanese and Japanese culture but is also a long-time K-Pop fan, I just felt the exasperation from Kennie on this. As a black woman, I will never cease to be amazed by how quickly and blatantly people can steal or make full careers using black culture and style as a blueprint, and then denigrate and insult the very people who helped create the tools they use to get their paycheck. You can certainly enjoy music, fashion, and anything from other cultures, and you can combine and fuse different elements together to make something unique, but to do so and not acknowledge where your “originality” and “style” comes from, to do so and tear down the people who gave it to you, to live in ignorance and merely hype up your own ego, especially when you clearly are just crawling on the shoulders of those more talented than you, is actually vile.

I am seconding and in complete support for ceasing with suggesting anti-black media for reactions. It’s sinister to find entertainment in Black ppl re-triggering themselves and performing akin to attack dogs for the benefit of NB people’s need to feel good about being able to identify instances of anti-Black racism. It doesn’t take into consideration the health of the Black people whose content you enjoy. Show support by taking into consideration that the labour of intentionally giving time and space to anti-Blackness has accumulative harm. I would say it’s also an intraracial issue as well but that requires a different consideration. All in all, just take a beat before the “Hey, did you see xyz...”

So True. And anyway, "He's from Europe" is suuuch a weak excuse and does not stand up to any analysis on a current European perspective or a historical one. Current: I(a European) have only heard one person ever use that word, and she immediately got shot down and shunned by her old friends. Also, why does it not surprise me that the 365 dude is a twat?

So while I absolutely believe that there's definitely an issue with colorism and anti blackness in asia, there's also so so much ignorance. It isn't even the words or slang we use...its our natural tone and cadence they try to use because even when we speak "properly" we have a quality in our voice that just comes naturally. We code switch and other Ppl can still tell what ethnicity we are regardless of our efforts to sound neutral because we got that twang we can't shake. They don't get that our verbal expressions and mannerisms comes from the black struggle and it's just who we are even the ones that run from it still keep it tucked away. Other ethnicities monetize our experiences but we are called ghetto and deemed uneducated for the same shit. I'm sick of the clownery and fuckery of it all.

Every day I would have to escape the gaslighting from non-black fans, the usage of black culture while hating black people, blatant colorism, and anti-blackness. Honestly, I don't keep up with kpop as much as I used to. If I stumble upon a good Korean song on Spotify, I like it, but don't try to get to know the artist. There are only 2 groups I stay kinda up to date on. I still watch shows from all over Asia (Alice in Borderland is good asf), but I kinda distance myself from getting too deep. (Honestly, a lot of Asian drama's I've seen always include slick colorist comments and it makes me disinterested so quickly.)

Then there’s the whole issue with how black people are presented in k-drama & j-dramas. I remember this scene from a drama were the FL was in Hawaii and hella lost and disoriented, and she bumps into this black guy who asks her like "are you okay?" "do we need to call the police or the hospital?", and the character freaks the heck, acting like this dude was trying to attack her. The guy looks hella confused, and stands there like 'what the hell is going on with this person'.

As an asian american who was born and raised in the states, but grew up highly immersed in my asian identity, I’ve always been so conflicted when it comes to the blatant racism and appropriation towards black people in mainly mainland asia. Just honestly, the whole history of tensions between the black and asian community, especially in [anti-minority white] america, is such a heartbreakingly complex and deeply rooted issue. When it comes to the perception of black people in asia, I think I’m starting to realize that the issue isn’t so much about asians being ignorant because they have less accessibility to anti-racism education compared to say people living in more diverse and black western countries, but more that many asians DO NOT make the effort to be anti-racist, learn better, or stop racist actions in the first place. It’s one thing to stumble because you’re unlearning ignorance. It’s another to continuously profit off of or make jokes out of people you know you are hurting. Also, the constant gaslighting that happens with k-stans towards black and brown fans is so disgusting and harmful. For Example, Large Korean media companies have been producing so many shows about Korean hip hop and have been profitting off basically black culture but NEVER address the original foundation of hip hop - which is basically all genres of music since 1900s (I don't know too much about music history, but most of what we know today was founded by someone of color). Hip hop was founded by the black struggle in the U.S. It's time that Asians start becoming more aware and show care towards people outside of their race and color.

This is so WILD. Yesterday I went down the rabbit hole of some Korean Kpop idols deliberately doing blackface/menstral shows and the “Asianfishing” attacks that other black women were getting on Twitter just because they may have been born with Asian like features. The more accusations of blackface and blackfishing and people putting on blackness as a personality trait as a costume....it used to make me angry as fuck but now it just makes me deeply sad because as we have a right to be in spaces we always have to reaffirm that we have this right and instead of it just being a right. It came to a point where I could not enjoy K-pop as I would before because it felt like they were putting on blackness and getting praised money exposure and this always happens. Especially on TicToc where (white)people take from black creators and they get all the glory and the money and the opportunities while the actual creators, the black creators, get nothing if anything crumbs. I love the way I am, blackness and coyly curls and all and it took more time than I am proud of to accept myself but God damn sometimes it is exhausting to be black and witness the constant show of people putting on blackness and getting money. Wow i wish i had the “confidence” to not only write a self insert fanfiction with the male equivalent of a Mary Sue as protag, but also publish it and have to guts to make a movie out of it. Jason Lee may not be successful as a writer, but he could sell his confidence in pills.

@cadeocafeeee
@cadeocafeeee 3 года назад
@@army4chair345 I’m not sure iq has to do much either, since it has do more with logical and mathematical intelligence. Of course one could say the plot holes are logical problems in the story, but the way the editing and the writing portray the protagonist as “the guy” and plainly ignores/defend the flaws in the character of Jason lee and the racism and sexism in his and other characters’ actions (that are so tone deaf they seem to be identified as as positive in the movie) - show a lack of emotional and interpersonal intelligence of not only the fictional characters, but also the writer. I used the “confidence” in “” to be ironic in tone, it was meant to infer that it is actually ignorance about the world around him, which in turn allows him to be so overconfident about his own abilities as a writer, and probably as a person if we can consider this movie a self insert fictional story.

Also on the topic of the anti blackness issue and using black culture for aesthetic reasons, my advice at this point is just don’t give them any attention. The more you bring their stuff to light, the more attention they get. So with kai’s song, I didn’t stream it, i didn’t watch the music video, and I didn’t go out my way to search for it. Just. Don’t. Engage. And either they’ll get the message or they will lose profit. Whichever way is great.

I always say this! Companies KNOW. They know that you're rage-clicking, rage-sharing, rage-commenting, rage-streaming. They KNOW that making a group of people (justifiably) mad or weirded out gets them more engagement and free promo, and thus more revenue. That coin doesn't somehow NOT go into their pocket just because it came from someone who was angry, or coming there solely to critique them. We should still discuss and critique for sure (like in this video), but sometimes after a certain point as an individual all I can do is say "blocked. No free promo from me!"

Kai Rant: .....out of all the exo members he's the one sm always try's to brand as "Exotic" so at this point it's not ignorance. Years ago even the exo members illude to kai always being the "exotic" member in the group because of his darker skin. He's also almost always the member who is branded using parts of black culture (dreads, do-rag ect) and SM and his stylists/ hairdressers keep doing it- and have been for years. Let's not even get started on some of the negative things his members have said regarding his darker skin...... Edit: It's even more strange to me that SM as a company does not try to fix any of these issues considering the amount of Black Songwriters and Producers that make songs/demos for them, then again I should not be not surprised. It's disrespectful.

I stopped being a fan of kpop and other Asian music/shows/movies and here are the reasons: 1. The labels/entertainment companies basically make the idols totally slaves. They have almost no control over their music. 2. As a result of their management being sh*t, their music sounds mass-produced, repetitive, and boring. Some songs might be catchy, but they’re all so bland and boring. In comparison to artists that have freedom to do what they want, kpop idols are hella boring. 3. The overwhelming amount of racism within that industry is totally disgusting. For one, there are overwhelming beauty standards where dark-skinned Asians have to bleach and lighten their skin to conform to them and seem white (which as a white person I find kinda creepy. My skin came from genetics and not going outside lmao. And it’s totally fine if a non-white person wants to have blue contact lenses and blonde hair or something, but it’s another when beauty standards make non-white people look and appear to be white). And two, the glamorization of Korean rappers (and sometimes singers) trying to seem “black” to seem like they’re inclusive. And it’s not because of the rapping (rapping is a universal genre anyone can do), it’s because of the blatant racism against black people. I don’t remember which one, but I saw a Korean rapper wearing the CONFEDERATE FLAG on their sleeve. It’s insane to me how fans of that rapper might have thought it was a black symbol. But in reality, it’s a symbol of racism. There are probably several more reasons why I’m not a kpop fan anymore. I didn’t mean to offend anyone for this in any way. This is just my way of looking at it. But I honestly feel that kpop fans need to take a big look at the industry and acknowledge the racism, sexism, and any other problems within it. I feel like the only way to combat this is to boycott the industry so they change their ways. Then we can start supporting them again.
