Three years in and my Hyperlite Mountain Gear Porter 5400 Pack is going strong! In this video I give a rundown on what I like and don't like about the pack as well as how I pack it, what accessories I use with it and if I think it's up to the task of tackling the very rough Tasmanian scrub.

I really enjoy your channel because I'm also ~195cm tall- always tough to learn about gear that works for a tall guy. Thank you!

Hello from NZ - great review, Mr Mowser. I've heard Tasmania has some outstanding wilderness. Cheers.

It sure does, it’s pretty special here. But having travelled through NZ it’s hard to say much I would prefer. Need to get back to NZ and do some trekking there!

Good comments. I got the 4400 10 years ago for longer trips (5400 was not out). It has been good for various AT sections including Maine, White Mountain 4000Footers, and JMT (fine with 46 pounds for 12 days and bear canister required )., and a variety of winter trips in Canada (bulky gear). Be basic simple, put minimal on outside when bushwhacking. Main thing is it is tough compared to some of the cuter fancier a bit lighter packs used by many though hikers.

Absolutely love my Hyperlite Porter! Surprisingly comfy for the weight savings achieved! Can fit enough gear and food for a 9-10 day trip! (Btw, my front mesh pack seems to have held up a little better than Mowser’s but agree with the comments about its durability)

Very helpful review. I feel like I need to earn my stripes / dial in my gear before I can justify one of these but your take on it provides some useful insights which make it more likely it's the way I'll go eventually.

Hey Mowser, like you were, I'm a Macpac Cascade man. Particularly for SW Tassie. I'm taking your word for it so I'm going to buy a Porter. Great review.

🙏 thanks so much for the feedback! have two mates that have made the switch also and haven’t regretted. It works well. I also know of a couple of guys that just walked the west coast from Bathurst harbour to Strahan and atleast two of them had Hyperlite packs!

Thanks for the review- good info. I bit the bullet & ordered a SW4400 a few weeks ago. Was tossing up between the 70& 50lt for general tramps in NZ.

Hi Mowser, I had a Hyperlite Southwest 3400 I took on the Western Arthur’s, it got shredded (mainly the external pockets) during pack hauling. It was replaced by Hyperlite with a Northrim 3400 which has more durable outer pockets. The original Southwest was made in Mexico, the straps all looked thin and cheap, the new Northrim was made in the USA according to the tags, and the build quality seems much better. I had not too many issues with comfort but it was bulging (3400) for a longer trip like the WA.

Back when I initially trialled the Hyperlite as I heard of similar issues. Build quality has definitely improved now. I’m glad to hear they replaced it for you!

Good informative video. My only constructive criticism would be that you’re not taking advantage of the daisy chain system on the exterior of the pack. Indeed, this was the original winter/ snow pack of HMG before the Prism, Headwall and Ice Pack were designed in very recent years. The Porter model is meant to hang and attach gear externally to the lengthy daisy chain and not use pockets.

Great point! Definitely something I will consider for future trips!

Hi Mowser what do you think about atom packs its looks very similar to the hyperlight made here in the Uk.
@mowsertas

I have looked online at the Atom Packs. While I haven’t tried one I really like the look of them. Have considered purchasing.

Nice review of the pack. From what I understand, there are no lift loaders on these packs. All the packs I’ve used have load lifters, and I think I would miss that feature. If I don’t have load lifters on a pack, the pack seems to pull away from me in the upper portion (shoulder blade area). In your opinion, is the lack of load lifters a problem, or is it a case of getting used to it? ATB from Norway 🇳🇴

Thanks for watching. Yes I had the same concerns! I mentioned it briefly at 8:04 in the video - this was one of my main concerns when purchasing but I have to admit I have not really noticed not having them. I think the porter hugs the back more than more traditional big packs and as a result it doesn’t really pull away. My 2 friends who also have this pack have also said the same thing and we are all happy we switched! I love Norway by the way. Spent a month there this year and cannot wait to return 😎 🇳🇴

@@mowsertas Thank you for answering. I may have to consider a Hyperlite pack in the future. If you haven’t already visited Jotunheimen in Norway, I recommend you do so. A lot of nice mountains to hike/climb. My favorite area in Norway for alpine adventures. We love the view from the top 👍🏻🇳🇴

Hey there! I’m considering the 85 liter for an all purpose pack. Summiting Denali, or doing a quick day mission. When stuffing the sack with 20-30 liters does it allow for folding all the way down for that amount of storage?
@mowsertas
@mowsertas 7 месяцев назад
Yes it packs down well with that amount. I will often use it as a daypack when I have setup a base camp ⛺️

I wonder how it would go in lamination. I have One planet packs get possibly better than Macpac but ist demma fabric easy punched through. How would it stand wait a while at lamination qld ? Any way great vid..

Direct punctures are a problem but I have had no troubles in some pretty intense Tasmanian scrub!

How do you find it sitting right up against your back? I'm a big sweater and have always had packs that allow some ventilation on my back to help deal with it...
@mowsertas
@mowsertas Год назад
Good point! I definitely sweat a bit with this but it’s not tooooo bad. The ospreys with the air flow mesh that I have used are nice but happy to put up with the sweat for the weight saving.

I don't know if i should take the 70L or 85L ... My need is to be autonomous on packcraft mission or winter mission for 7/10 days. I think i'll go on 85L. Is it easy to roll it and to make it smaller ?
@mowsertas
@mowsertas 9 месяцев назад
I would go the 85L. Rolls and packs down very small with nothing in it. We often use as a day pack for side trips on longer trips and it works well.

@@mowsertas and the dynema is more resistant on 85L ? Do you have instagram ?

@@juupafilms I'm not sure if its more resistant? As far as I'm aware both the 70L and 85L Hyperlite Porter are almost exactly the same apart from the total volume. Yep, I'm on Insta at instagram.com/mowsertas/

I have thrown everything at this pack and still going strong a year after this video. For the durability I’m happy to have paid a bit more. Has lasted a lot longer than some of my previous packs. As for looks, it’s not the prettiest thing but it does the job for me.
