Dr. Davis I wish I knew you in the 60s from the start of my period age 12 severe pain and alllllll of sx you mentioned. I was very lucky near my home town I did have a doc that was very well informed about endo and did have a surgery to remove a very large cyst. Unfortunetly moved away from area and lost all hope for correct dx and really true medical help. I am so glad you have posted this information for girls/women for this generation so they don't think they are crazy. In my mother's generation when she complained of pain to her doc he told her THE REASON YOU HAVE PAIN IS BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO BE A WOMEN!!!!!

Their are truly a few doctors left like you and the numbers are dwindling your one of the doctors left that have an actual history in multiple surgeries in your expertise and experience in what you do and care enough about the patience to even do this video. i was looking for info on what is the percentage survival for the ovaries after a hysterectomy where they are left behind. it's challenging to find any data on this. you said at time of this video 20-40% chance that the ovaries don't make it due to somewhat reduced blood supply causes by surgery scarring or interuption of blood supply.. i think that's what I heard anyway... and that is important sort of info for women who are trying to weight the pros and cons....
Wow I had a partial hysterectomy in 1992 when I was pregnant didn't know until after I woke up the doctor said they couldn't stop the bleeding and I want have period anymore or kids wow I thank God that was my third pregnancy and here today I am 61 years old and still have blood in my urine only if them doctor would have had the knowledge and the equipment they have today thanks you soooooooo much for your info I'm sure it help so many others 🙏
Thank you for creating this informative video Dr. I'm choosing to have a hysterectomy at age 40 for heavy uterine bleeding. So heavy I was hospitalized recently and needed 2 blood transfusions. I'm currently at the stage where I'm getting a biopsy and tons of blood work. I'm quite nervous about the surgery as im a single mother of a 2yr old and really can't afford much down time. Thankfully she's a pretty mellow lil girl. You have put my mind at ease and given me so much information that I know all the right questions to ask. @@preetgill6690 Hello. My recovery time was pretty quick. I'd say I felt pretty good after 2-3 weeks. I did discover I have Stage 4 Endometriosis, so that's the only struggle I have now. The hormonal change is tough in my opinion. I've gained a little weight and am struggling to lose it. But overall it was the best decision I made for my health. My whole visit with my surgeon was him telling me I need a hysterectomy with both ovaries removed and me telling him I don't want a hysterectomy nor my good ovary removed. It was horrible. I had a large cyst. No symptoms, no pain, discovered when examined for hernia. I didn't know where to go for a second opinion. My sisters convinced me to have the hysterectomy, worse decision of my life. It's been over ten months and I still am very depressed and have cried almost every day feeling like I'm going insane. I don't know how other women can feel well so quickly. I still have pain around my belly button area. I am starting to do better but it is definitely a life altering procedure and changes your body in many ways.
Dr's will most certainly push it on you! I'm at a point I'm in so much pain I'm considering talking to a specialist about it. I hope you're doing much better! I suffer from heavy & severe cramping the 1st two days of my cycle. No I have bilateral hydrosalpinx which causes me unbearable pain about 3 days after my cycle. My iron stays low & I'm just tired.
@Tani J I would love to but it's NOT against the law to castrate a woman for benign conditions. Kept saying "we don't know for sure" even though no solid mass in cyst. However, he did lie telling me if I didn't have everything out I had a 50% chance of getting cancer. They can be VERY convincing with their scare tactics. It worked. A teaching hospital - higher rates of surgery. Have to get their quotas so students can move on to their own practice. He has a whole institution and $$ lawyers that I could ever have. I've changed my estrogen a few times. Still no sex life. Still very depressed. Thank you for your comment. Good conversation for others to read.
@Tani J Thank you for the recommendations. I HAD a great sex life. No more. I am still traumatized by the whole experience. Yes, I have a clitorus but it doesn't replace the wonderful uterine orgasms. I get a little then it fads away and is over. Even a glass of wine doesn't help libido, just makes me fall asleep.

@Tani J Yes, I have ALL my records. No, there was NO cancer found. A lot of what I experienced was decline of estrogen. He wouldn't believe me. My reaction was similar, I believe, to what a younger woman, who had NOT gone through menopause. In other words my ovaries were still very functional even though I had no monthly periods. All the doctors I have been to have said, very mildly, "your ovaries must still have been producing some estrogen". I look at them and say SOME????? I was a wreck. What also complicated things is when I developed SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth) (from the manipulation of my intestines) causing intestinal pain. I believe it may have resulted from the ileus I developed in the hospital. No one will confirm it's connection. I have never been able to eat like I use to. My surgery was in 2017. I'm finally getting it that what I am now experiencing. When women are having a "difficult time" with their post-menopausal systems. Tired, low/no libido, blunted emotions, ect. ect. I NEVER had those symptoms before. It is foreign to me. Again, I do believe I could have been treated with iodine. I was sent to the cancer center 1) because my CA-125 was 47 and 2) because they have a lab and could check the ovary immediately. My surgeon refused to do #2 and pushed the cancer fear. Little did I know they DID get the report from the lab within a few hours or so. So all the other work he did was unnecessary. However he did not have to do Staging which is getting into the lymph nodes. Thank you so much for allowing me to share my story with others. Buyer beware.
Very informative, I am due to do a hysterectomy in August but the doctor never did a scan he only did a examination. I have my pre op in June but really don't know what question I should be asking.
How statistics have changed in the last 7 years. My surgeon mainly does robotic hysterectomies (with mine he also took the cervix and Fallopian tubes but spared my ovaries). He sometimes has to convert to a laparoscopic hyster and rarely has he had to move to a TAH. I wonder if most surgeons are now doing the robotic hysters or if it’s still laparoscopic for most and TAH for a minority? I have one incision in my belly button which extends vertically about 2 inches. That’s it - steri-strips over it. I’m POD 4 and I’m feeling great!
I see this video is 9 years old. Thank goodness because this information is drastically different from everything I've ever known. 80% abdominal?? Back to work in 4-5 days?? 😳 The hormone information is great though. How would we know if the ovaries are doing okay or if we need to sub in more estrogen?
Interesting to watch this video in 2022 while post op for laparoscopic hysterectomy. Times change. I stayed in hospital over night. I find the "back to work in a few days" story a bit rosey.
My name is Guadalupe Caballero from San Antonio Texas and I had a hysterectomy back in 2000 I was in and out I don't remember what kind of surgery it was I only stay in the hospital for about 3-4 hours in pain 1 day moving furniture I was in no more pain or anything and my sex drive improved I was more sexual had no menopause no no medication for menopause and it's been 22 years and am I supposed to feel something in my stomach move like a baby and is it supposed to be grown my stomach and I can't seem to locate the Doctor who did the surgery or get a hold of any one in the hospital where it was done my stomach has been hurting so much that it feels weird like if am pregnant and I do remember having just one bikini small cut and I don't recall them saying anything about going through my vagina and I had no vagina pain or discharge so am kind of worried about what is happening and I just need some advice in what to do also my stomach is growing and it's hard and something moving like when I had my 2 sons I was 25 years old when I had the surgery am 47 years old now and am still very sexual no menopause no heat no flashes the way everyone say they went through I experience any of that or stay in the hospital more than 6 hours and I wasn't out of work or in pain for that many weeks I only experience pain for one day even right after surgery the next day I move my China entertainment center by myself so am really worried here
Dr Gregory can a hysto help with IC and endometriosis, or could having a hysto make the IC worse? My IC is always so much worse before and during my period.
My urologist says it can help IC or.make it worse. Everyone is different and it's pretty much just a roll of the dice. I'm pretty terrified about that part. But right now it feels like everything is scrunched together which is so uncomfortable. Just hoping for relief.
I'm back for comment number three still have two big fibroids inside my uterus and two big ones outside total all 20 with all this code that I can't get a doctor to explain anything but this doctor help me beyond shadow of a doubt but I'm still doubtful about getting it done about hormone replacement someone said synthetic hormones or the other hormones was better and I can't remember do you have to have hormone replacement what if you decide not to do or have to have it for your body to live I'm just in the dark about all of the hormones?? Doctor great info, appreciated. I was told womb, bladder dropped to stage 3, I must have a hysterectomy or insert pessary. Bladder working normal, no leakage. Disturbing feeling, peeping by vagina opening. No pain. Can I live with stage3 cystocele what are the further complications. Is the pessary ok to choose. No other severe complications. If you’ve already gone through menopause before having a hysterectomy, I don’t think you been HRT. If the surgery put you in menopause, talk with your surgeon because you may need HRT.
I'm facing this issue and my uterus is swollen about 15 weeks or better compared to a pregnancy and I have 4 fybriods that are maybe golf ball size two inside two outside can this cause urinary problems like starting and stopping I don't have any control over my bladder it seems the Dr has me using a pessary and not working to well I guess I'll have to have my bladder fixed in conjunction with this surgery you are talking about is a there a video on prolapse as well please help I'm scared wish I had you as my Dr please let me know if anyone has the same issues and or has loss of urine and starting and stopping peeing thanks God bless
Wendy I can relate to you so well. I had a hysterectomy about 8 weeks ago. I had about 7 fibroids which caused me to have very bad periods every month. I tried birth control for regulation but that didn't help at all. I decided it was time to go ahead and have a hysterectomy. My uterus was 2lbs swollen from my fibroids so my doctor couldn't do it vaginally. Truth be told, over the years I had bladder incontinence to the point where I had to be on incontinence medication for about 5 years. As of last year I decided to get off of the medication due to the side effects. I was surprised to know that once my large uterus was removed my bladder problem is getting much better with no leakage. My bladder problem was mainly coming from my enlarged uterus due to my fibroids. I couldn't have made a better choice to have a hysterectomy. No more heavy periods and bad bladder leakage.
@@autumngrace3135 I had a laparscopic hysterectomy. My doctor tried to do it Vaginal but my uterus was way too enlarged for that. I had seven fibroids that caused my uterus to swell 2lbs. I was cut in my stomach four places by two doctors. They had a hard time getting my uterus out because of the size. I caught pure hell getting up walking for the first time. I couldn't get up out the bed alone. It took four people to help me get up and walk. I wouldn't wish this type of trauma on my worst enemy. When they woke me up from surgery I woke up hollering and calling on Jesus. I was in so much pain they couldn't give me the Morphine and Percocets fast enough. I had severe back pain from the anasthesia. As far as incontinence issues I can relate to you as well. I had been dealing with bladder leakage for years before I found out what I was dealing with. When I gave birth to my son 14 years ago I immediately stop urinating when I pushed him out. A nurse informed me then that I needed to see a urologist. The doctors couldn't figure out what caused me to stop urinating. The whole time I was pregnant all I did was constantly urinate because he was sitting on my bladder. Once I pushed him out I pushed on my weak bladder muscles. That's the only theory the doctors came up with. I had to stay in the hospital a week until I started by urinating properly. That was scary as hell because it's nothing they can give you to make you urinate like they can give you for being constipated. I cried everyday because I couldn't understand what was going on with me. The doctors started me on some Vallium to relax my muscles and that did the trick. A few years after that I start seeing a urologist and he started me on some Toviaz for my incontinence. I took it for about 5 years and I was able to come off of them after my hysterectomy. My oversize uterus was sitting on my bladder. Once I got my uterus removed no more bladder leakage. I had everything removed except my ovaries. She removed both Fallopian tubes my cervix and my uterus. I wanted her to remove my ovaries but she didn't want that to send me into early menopause at the age of 42. I would advise any female with fibroids to go on and have a hysterectomy. You will feel so much better and your incontinence will get better. I kept putting it off as long as I could but my periods got worser and worser to the point where I had to where pads and tampons. I couldn't take it anymore. Medicaid covered the cost so I no longer had a reason to delay the surgery.
@@kayk.d.noonoo ( I am 50). Found out yesterday that it's not a fibroid but carcinoma(cancer) in over sized uterus , tumor 7x10cm, plus very thick lining. Don't know if it's gone into lymph yet. They most likely will do an abdominal hysterectomy . I have the Lord, if it's His will for me to go home, so be it. He's at the door now anyway.❤️

Not always. I have two large fibroids that are causing all kinds of problems, including very heavy bleeding. One was already removed and grew back with a vengeance.

Why? I had laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis and got this block. Man.... Game changer. I had 2 previously and this time I did so much better post op. Was up and out of hospital within an hour after I woke up. Please look into this more. I personally tell everyone about this now. It's amazing honestly

@@AnyelinaL Hi Angela! The spinal block surely helps for the pain after surgery but not for a long time. You are getting a hystorectomy so you will get very good pain relief afterwards. The spinal block is given during surgery so that they don't have to inject you with pain meds every 15 mins. If you have surgery and you are put under anesthesia, you are only knocked out but your body still feels every single bit of pain and reacts to it. So to keep your blood pressure low and your heart rate low they inject you with pain medication every 15 mins. This causes severe nausea when you wake up, and you will throw up, which can pop a stitch inside you from all the wrenching. The spinal ensures that you don't have to get that pain medication every 15 mins under anesthesia so you wake up after surgery feeling really good. Most of the pain will be taken away if you have the spinal block, but most women still requires pain relief when waking up. I still asked for a top up, a drip, Tramadol. Just know that anesthesia itself makes you constipated because it makes your bowel lazy. You are having a hystorectomy so they don't want you to bear down so I'm 100% certain they will prescribe a stool softner to be taken daily, just ask them make sure to ask for that. It helps a lot I promise you. And drink it every single day for atleast the first week to 2 weeks. Set alarms. If you are having your uterus removed laparascopicly, ask the dr for a laparoscopic block as well, then your incisions won't hurt for 3 days. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me.
@@rclimon When you are under anesthesia, the anesthesiologist takes a ultrasound on your abdomen above your naval and search for 2 big nerves that goes to your lower abdomen. She injects it with a pain block and then they continue with the surgery as always. No pain meds injected every 15 mins so no feeling the need to vomit afterwards. You wake up and your incisions does not hurt AT ALL. I would never do it any other way again. It's really a game changer.

I was told I needed a radical hysterectomy due to cancer. Womb tubes overies lymph nodes etc. Worst decision of my life. I’ve had terrible headaches. Pain. Unable to sit down or walk. Pain killers don’t work. And why is it male gynaecologists who push women to having hysterectomies??

It sounds like you are not as good a vaginal surgeon, as open or laparoscopic. Its the most elegant and least invasive of all methods. Its madness that no one is now being taught vaginal surgery, perhaps because all the hugely experienced vaginal surgeons trained in the past are now retiring. It's proper surgery, and only gynaecologists were taught to do it properly. I must have done 500. Agreed if you want to do a subtotal for some reason , or remove the adnexae the laparoscope will be useful. Please don't let the vaginal route be lost in the enthusiasm to use toys. When I was properly taught to do a vag hysterectomy it was always the first choice. They can go home as soon as a lap hyst (which you still complete vaginally) if you prepare them properly, but I think day case is an unnecessary risk for any route because of rare but possible sudden bleeding from a pedicle. Uncommon. Teach those fellows proper vaginal surgery! They will need that skill for some prolapse cases too. BW
I am sorry, but this should not be outpatient!! Unless you have had a uterus removed, 1-2 weeks is not duable to return to work. I returned today, after 4 weeks and I requested to work from home. This surgery is NOT easy!! I had it done lap/robotic. I had my uterus fused to abdominal wall. With all respect, male physicians ca not say when woman can return to work. Its a painful procedure. If you can, take at least 5 weeks!! Great video otherwise.
