If our Quick Charge session with KEMPOWER up in Canada piqued your interest in the fast charging options serving eastern Canada, here's the wider trip in our 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5.
This video focuses on Québec and New Brunswick, with a soupçon of northern Maine's DCFC limitations dropped in at the end... hopefully that will change soon, as NEVI funding goes to work.
Note that many of the charging stops on this trip were not optimally planned, as I made decisions around testing apps/cards and progressing from 50kW to 100kW and then the full dynamic power of the KEMPOWER solution (video here: • KEMPOWER Satellites Co... . They became separate videos, in the end, but the flow still serves to showcase how EV travel has changed in the past five years.
We were last up in Canada with our 2017 Bolt EV when 50-100kW hardware was the norm, as you can see here: • Bolt EV Canada Road Tr... . Updated hardware from Electric Circuit and new installations from Petro-Canada and Electrify Canada have since upped the power and stall count, in busier regions.
This IONIQ 5 EV road trip to Canada emphasizes both the latest hardware for DC fast charging and the gaps that we still have to fill on both sides of the border.
We hope you find the information useful. If so, consider fueling the channel with a cup of coffee via Ko-Fi so that we can make more!

As you noticed almost all the eastern Canadian operators have roaming agreements with each other and I believe Chargepoint participates as well so you could have used your Chargepoint card or app at the locations you used circuit électrique.
@Runtythestar
Perfect timing. Circuit Electric is now issuing rfid cards again. A year ago, they weren't issuing to the US. I was just able to order one while watching your video. The problem I had last year was my phone plan wasn't international and I couldn't activate via the app unless I had wifi. Now we can go to Quebec over the Christmas Holiday without worry.

Great video Steve...East coast trip through to Newfounland on our list for next spring with a drop down along the US eastern seaboard!
@jamesk4005
did a similar trip a few years ago in the NiroEV left Belfast and drove into Canada near the coast to charge, and then north to Woodstock where I have friends and used to live for a few years. Then up the Trans-Canada to Quebec City and then down to Vermont. At that point, travel was much easier in Canada than it was in New England. We still have almost nothing in New Hampshire. Can not figure out to spend th VW money. Mass needs to put a high speed charger in Fitchburg Nice view of N.B.

Kempower! I say it again, Kempower!

Thanks, Steve! Fun trip up north. Maine is one of the states on my bucket list to visit, and I'd love to take a nice, slow EV road trip through the state. Maybe even make my way up to "Ke-Beck." 😀

I looooove to drive us201 in maine. It’s such a nice scenic drive
@nolanbrown7904
You should try using the built in navigation after the October update. It will tell you where to charge and and for how long. Just set DC max to 70 or 80% in infotainment. You will also get battery preconditioing with this.
@brianwhite3410
The drive through NB is even easier now because we have two Electrify Canada stations not too far from the highway. Also, some quick chargers have been added on the Quebec side since you did this trip.
@blacksheepev4519
My father went to that boarding school next to that charger in St Damien😊
@anthonyc8499
I get so jealous of you EGMP cars at the paired 200A Chargepoint stations. I was getting 75kW or so at an Oregon Starbucks-Volvo station while an EV6 was getting nearly 120kW. There’s practically no time penalty to use the CPE250s for you guys.
@todkapuz
nice round trip... it is funny... I hadn't put even 3000 miles on my ICE car in the last several years.... but in the first 3 months of my EV I've almost gotten 10k..........
@a1peck
As an Australian it’s funny seeing a Rio Tinto EV charger
@user-hb1it2ls6e
Just shows even in an expensive country like Canada 🇨🇦 how they encourage EVs with reasonable pricing to charge. The UK is absolutely rediculous at the moment price wise 😢
@IamTimClark
Great to do a road trip in Canada. We are starting to add more higher speed charging hope we accelerate for the next trip you make. 350KW would be the minimum I would install for additional units at existing stations. 50KW is quickly becoming too slow. I hope to buy my second EV soon and hope for ability to make faster charges when I am on a longer trip. Thanks for making great content.
@digilab2009
They added 4x180kW in Montmagny at the end of summer. For your next adventure!
@patrick7228
Really enjoy these road trips. Still don't roadtrip more than what a 100% charge can get me to and back. Still too nervous about the possibility of chargers not working and getting stranded. Also would feel some slow charge guilt with all these Kia's and Hyundai's pulling up to the chargers these days. 😂
@homomorphic
Timmies!
@Slvrsfr
Zero dcfc north of Bangor, currently don’t know of any evse over 100 north of Scarborough and that’s not Portland (a few miles south)except Tesla
@homomorphic
They let you into Canada again 'eh? 🙂
