That's what it looked like to me also, unless Sam's reaction time was slow. The DCT in the Veloster is quick no doubt, but I think there was more at play there.
I feel like Hyundai is leaving a lot on the table with no performance N model in awd…they could easily take on and win against Subaru just slap the 2.5t that’s in the K5/Sonata in a Awd package and keep the manual with the DCT as a option and they would destroy Subaru and the lowered Crosstrek they call the 2022 wrx.
The I30n/Veloster N was just a test in the waters before they roll the big bois out, have you even seen what they wanted from the Pre Production Veloster N?!! It was a 50k halo car lmfao.
I think eventually they will slap tht 2.5t thts in the Sonata N line into the Veloster N and Elantra N but tuned to maybe 300 bhp with more durable engine components. I don't belive they will add AWD system to them cars but instead upgrade the suspension systems front end.
Awd adds weight, price, complexity. Albert Biermann wanted the focus to be about FUN and still competitive pricing. There are still so many brand snobs, I don't think an expensive awd hyundai would sell well against the golf R, civic type R, STI, etc.

First dig race she had a poor start but wasn’t really catching. 2nd dig they took off at the same time and you can hear as if Sam starts to slow down before the end (rpm dropping, car upshifting). Sorry @vibes but she didn’t really catch him. Roll races were a joke. Like what Wayne said, slow start and she was ahead by a car length. Don’t know why they don’t do roll races with manual shifting. Once you’re cruising at 50kph the Q will upshift to keep rpms low and save gas. Not ideal specially since the race was vs a DCT that will downshift much faster.
Wish you guys would do a proper roll race. I can clearly hear the car is in a higher gear when you floor it. That outdated 7 speed will never kick down faster than a DCT. Take the gearbox out of it and do a proper roll race locked in 3rd or 2nd gear depending on speed.
Actually a DCT is much slower at kicking down compared to a torque converted automatic. Upshifting however, a DCT is faster all day. That being said, wouldn't matter. Put better drivers in both cars and the Veloster will walk the Q60.
@@gunzorkgaming7847 BINGO - I've pointed out in my comments above: the JATCO transmission TCM, specifically on the Q models, is tuned to take a billion years to downshift, thus one must ALWAYS be in manual mode. My 370z stays in Manual mode 100% of the time for this very reason. (yes I have learned my lesson and will get the 6-speed in the new Z).
Great to see that Q60 looking better than most other cars right now. After doing enough roll races on Sam's channel here, in my Q50RS400, not being in 2nd gear for the 40kph rolls, its not gonna go well. Racing against the 392 Charger, first roll I upshifted 2 to 3 and it was over, when Sam went, it was in 2nd and the race was so much closer. Consensus is the 7AT is the biggest weakness of the Q50/Q60. I *hope* now that Nissan/Infiniti is using the 9sp ZF unit in their new SUV's that it will migrate to the Q's and be tuned from the factory properly. Whole new ballgame, cosmetic update or not. Cool video Sam, love that Infiniti content.
In autocross and other performance events the Veloster N is classed with the Golf R, STI, and CTR. Ininiti/Nissan doesn't make fast cars except the GTR.
The Mk8 r would destroy the veloster n, it’s not even comparable. The Gti would be an interesting run, they both make around 230whp and the Gti makes 15 more ft lbs of torque at the wheels. Both have the same trap speed, but the veloster has better gearing down low so that makes up for the torque, among other things.

Additionally, track events place the Veloster N in the same class as the Golf R, STI, CTR while the GTI is in a lower class. I'm not a fan boy of any particular car though I have a Ecutek 93 tuned 2019 Q50, but who races in auto? Answer is a numb nuts does. Always so much likely left on the table with these videos but content is good so I'm not complaining. Plus paddle shift/center shifter at the best rpm which isn't 7,000 rpm. Also, performance oriented factiry cars run best on 93 octane. Pretty big difference with any of the cars running 92-93 verses 87 octane. As much as 30hp pull by the stock ecu. So many unknown variables. Also, at least got to try harder to get similar launches as a small jump or sleep at the hand drop makes a fairly big difference by mid 1/8th and quarter mile.
Elantra N owner here. Launch control does not work in sport. It is not tricky at all, if you actually know how to use it. (I assume it is the same in the Veloster) I am not sure why you would be using sport mode and not N mode. 🤷🏻♂️.
Elantra N has a better launch control set up than the Veloster N. During the Elantra N event, they actually said, that it has been modified in comparison to the Velsoter N.

06:32 - Here you can clearly see why the JATCO 7-Speed blows without a tune to increase the line pressure. It takes forever to go from Gear 7 down to Gear 3 situation. It's like that scene from Spaceballs: "Prepare ship, prepare ship... for.....". The Q owner in this case needs to contact a local tuner that uses Ecutek, pony up the courage and imagination for just a basic conservative "off the shelf" tune, or if the tuner has been in the biz for a while, and the guy owns a laptop, he can data log and get some incrementally improved tunes for maybe a little more money. It's not JUST a tune for more power, it's a tune for the stupid TCM which will run more line pressure. The other option is to ditch the "okay we're going to stay in automatic mode...". In this case, put the stupid thing in manual mode, select 3rd gear, then redo the roll race. This would reduce the 1.5 second delay involved. Otherwise, what you have here is an example of a great motor paired with handicapped transmission programing, not JUST a power vs. weight ratio issue. I think think the Veloster would win if the transmission issue was fixed with tuning, however, obviously an Infinity owner isn't going to have the tuner "only" tune the TCM, so then it becomes a question of Tune on Veloster vs. Q60s, if both vehicles have 100% stock parts. That's personally what I'd be interested in knowing, as a buyer of either vehicle is very likely to do some modifications, and turbo applications, the lowest hanging fruit is a simple plug n play ECU tune.
I guess we are the only ones. AWD vs FWD from a dig is a bad comparison. The Veloster driver had terrible reaction times on the dig races as well. After it got going though it started to catch up to the Q60 proving it’s the faster car.
He's as bad driver. I've seen him lose races where he was clearly in the better car. Weakest link is the driver in his case. He also shows favoritism to certain car brands.

Had a wrx here. Honestly, wrx is more of awd stop to go kinda car. N segments are more of flat curve. Now, I have my EN and now I'm realizing how I was awd biased. This can take the corner better than WRX.
Is it me or he's not driving the q60 correctly. You can early hear the 1st gear shifting super early. What us going on here he seems 2 not be able 2 drive this automatic correctly which is disturbing!!! Is the carpet In the way???
That’s what the was thinking too…driver mod needed. There’s no way this Veloster N should be walking this Q50S because I raced a tuned Veloster N and kept up with it in my tuned 03 G35 sedan…the guy literally told me at the next light that he didn’t expect that since he’s beat G37s with his car.
This is a perfect example of the Q60's biggest flaw... that granny shifting trans. It was built to hold torque and gas mileage NOT to win races. I'm glad we've come to a point in life where you can purchase a hot hatch with a quick shifting DCT for about 30k. Hyundai and Kia are on a great path.
@@joeaverage1989 all Q50/Q60's come with the same motor/trans. Only difference with the RS400 is a tune from factory. Weight is also the same (if not more). Hyundai is using that motor in their other models outputting over 300hp. I'm sure if they released a factory tuned for say... 320hp the race would still be even or in favor of the Veloster.
Utter nonsense. The 7AT shifts relatively fast in Sport Mode under wide open throttle. I should know, I have one. It responds slower than I'd like when you're just cruising, though. It needs to be more sensitive to gas pedal inputs.

You can hear him release the gas on the Q60 at the end, during the the dig race. On the roll race, he let her roll one gear up. With that being said, there is a big weight to horse power differences between these two vehicles.
Sam can you please stop racing with the heavy q60 awd and get a q50 rwd which is lighter even the q50 awd is lighter but I have two q50 rwd as trust me there is a difference just like the video from the other week with the q60 vs the r/t my q50 3.7 rwd always beats thos I’ve never got walked like that and my redsport red stays right beside a scat pack and sometimes beats them when I’m not heat soaked but that was when my redsport was stock im fbo now wish I could bring my car up here and y’all can let me drive it cause tbh you can’t drive
Agreed - short of a tune and changing the methodology around leaving them in auto mode, this is the WORST version of the Q series. You have a horrible TCM tune on the transmission, combined with the needless added weight of what I suspect is a gimmick "awd" version. Just buy some dedicated SNOW tires for the RWD version is what I'd do! I think the owner of this car needs to step away from paranoia lane and get an ECUTEK tune for it. He can go with a super conservative off the shelf tune and have the tuner up the line pressure in the transmission to reduce it's stupidity in partial throttle slow shifting behavior.

Question: So BOTH the 370z and the Q50-60's use the 7AT (yes I'm AWARE most 370z owners opt for the 6-speed manual) - Here's what I don't get. It's the SAME Automatic transmission, made by Jatco, same ratios, everything is the same, EXCEPT - The TCM programing. I bet you a "Beeeeeeelion" dollars that the Q50-60's can not only have the motor tuned, but also the horrible tune of the TCM in the Q models. My "boring" 370z can regularly Chirp 2nd gear in manual mode. I believe that Nissan/Infinity purposely put a crappy TCM tune on that version of the 7-speed auto to save clutch packs, this is why it short shifts and behaves inconsistently. With the turbos proucing more bottom end TQ, I'm betting Nissan/Infinity decided to play it safe when the Q50/60s first came out. Furthermore, JATCO is going to a 9-speed for the new Z, so it'll be interesting to see if they made any fundamental changes besides just "oh we have more gears now...". Ecutec is BADLY needed on that Q in this video. Even if he left all of the physical parts completely stock, it would drastically improve things. lastly: I'm lost on the "AWD" version. I know it's impossible, but it would be interesting to see a rainy day race from a dead stop on an AWD vs RWD model of the same car, because something tells me it's going to be more of a drivers race in that case.
Jatco is only producing the new 9 speed, they have nothing to do with the design. It is a Mercedes trans that was licensed to Jatco for production in the new Z and Frontier

Why aren’t you using the paddle shifters on the roll race? You’re just flooring it on the roll race and not dropping to the correct gear. The q50/q60, 7 speed trans is not tuned well at all.
IDEA: Kickstarter campaign so the Q60s owner can afford the $700-$1000 for a simple tune to reduce the embarrassing behavior of the transmission on that thing. Yes, it would also give it more power, but the main problem here is transmission related, clearly demonstrated in the short shift 1-2 behavior in the first off the line race. Z1 Motorsports, for $1000: "ECU tuning is the best dollar-per-horsepower upgrade you can perform on your 3.0t Q60 (VR30). The result is a noticeable gain in horsepower and torque without having to turn a single bolt on your car. The Z1 tune can be installed on a stock Q60, or one with basic upgrades like drop-in air filters, blow off valves, or heat exchanger. Average performance gains seen on a non-Sport Q60 are 100hp and over 100lb-ft. On a Redsport Q60 average performance gains are 50hp and over 75lb-ft."
Where’s the proof too all this? Forget Z1 I’d rather go with “Nismo Knights” for the Infiniti tuning and probably for same price or cheaper and more hp.
My brother in law works for Infiniti. He said the Q60s are having a lot of turbo issues and failures. He only works on the warranty work on these engines!!

Most all wheel drive cars will beat the n off the line. It's a very difficult car to launch. But once it gets going, the N is a beast especially on rolls.

No the N is just faster and lighter stock give them their props, tune the q and it’ll smoke the N but at the end of the day both cars are built for different purposes.
@@SamCarLegion I have it and I can confirm it takes about 0.5-0.7s off 0-60. VN is TERRIBLE to launch without launch control due to the lack of initial boost. All you have to do is SLAM on the brake and gas pedal and it works 100% of the time.
