You have the best drag race format! I hate when some channels switch to like 6 different camera angles mid race. I like how you play each one separately so we can clearly see how they pull. Good runs, I knew the Veloster would smack it haha.
3:15 "was a good launch" 🤣.. i hope you were joking.. but not consider that horrible and sluggish launch.. a good one. Sti have to be launched from 4000rpm minimum, but could vary by track surface. That car should launch as a bullet, you launched like a fart 🤣
I watched the video and thought the same thing. he burned the clutch riding it that hard. that "good" launch was horrible. My wrx launches way harder than that, and it's stock.
The gearing in those is a pita if you’re not used to it plus no 5K clutch dump launch. Poor STI wasn’t in its final form yet or it would have done much better. Some cars are hard to extract best numbers from but the STI/WRX/Evo cars are next level difficulty.
@@GaryDownes wrong. My WRX with a tune would eat both of these in drag race. He can't launch or shift for shit Idc how much drag racing experience he has. I'm in a 425hp Fa20 WRX.
@@bubblelex5051 like even with shifter cables and not direct linkage like the STI I can shift much better than that. I'd wager 2k I'd take that veloster with an STI.
I’m Happy to own a Veloster N DCT! So much fun to drive. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it 😆. Hyundai did a great job! Can’t wait to see what they have for the future .
I'm not just saying this to be mean or a fantard but I seriously do call into question your shifting in the STi. I get that 1st to 2nd can be kinda rough sometimes but 2nd-3rd, 3rd-4th, 4th-5th, 5th-6th. Those should be almost immediate. I should not be able to notice the car jerk when you shift.
100% spot on. The STI is a little tough to get the launch right but when mastered, it's actually very quick off the line & the 1st to second change is normally way less 'jerky' as seen in this video.
I have a manual 2020 veloster n but this whole test is shit. Manual vs auto? I mean that’s already stupid. Sti can destroy this car. Raced a couple sti’s and unless it’s perfect weather the sti always wins
@@keith9710 Are you saying that if STI had a manual, it would win? Otherwise, It seems like you're telling me to not believe what I am seeing. The VN clearly beat the STI and the STI is AWD. The STI is just not that quick...Anybody saying otherwise is just cucking for Subaru.
@@williamkirsch8662 don't think he did. You need to hold down the traction control button to completely shut off the system. Get waaaay better launches
The sti boost kicks in at 4k to redline . if he is trying to shift as fast as he can he isn't getting any power in the car at all. All the power is on 2nd 3rd and 4th once you get to 5 6 nothing there. If he did shift at redlone then the Veloster is just faster
Nice! No frills racing right here. Last trip out to the drag strip Sam I rolled with a Veloster N in baby blue and the older fella driving it looked to be just having the time of his life. Clear to see why. I can't get past the weird proportions and the 3 door thing but can't deny the performance. Great vid again mate.
Took the Veloster N for a test drive today and I couldn't stop giggling like a kid doing his first donuts!!! Going to factory order one tomorrow morning 💪😎
Congrats on the n! I just ordered a 2022 cyber grey manual myself.. i was tossing up between a elantra n or veloster n but the veloster just looks better and I think it'll be a more fun playful car in general... plus I'm a little biased being a current veloster turbo owner
Maybe it's the elevation where I am. I test drove one and wasn't impressed at all. Didn't feel even remotely quick. Then I started looking at a Type R. About a year later, bought a 2021 supra. 😁
Hey man hopefully I don't rub you the wrong way but have you thought about bringing im someone else to do the drag races with the manual cars? I feel like a more faster shifter would have had this race close
@@stevornrichards1380 I drove a 2017 a few years ago and I don’t remember it ever being that long. You can’t Honda bang gear them but they definitely can be shifted way faster
In this particular case, the Subbie would have lost even if Lewis Hamilton was driving it. Manual are being shown up for the dinosaurs they are everytime they are pitted against a decent automatic transmission
Again, the DCT make the difference. You can see each time Sam pass a shift, the Veloster gets away. I'd like to know if the Veloster used the launch control, and if so, at what rpm he set it? Another good one Sam👍🤙
STi needs driver mod. I still have my 04 that I bought brand new. It's far from stock now but I ran 13.068 with a 1.699 60' stock. I know new ones are heavier and have taller gearing but that was not a good launch. I got best 60' launching at 5500rpm and your shifts are slow and it's not because the gears are bad. Still love your videos but in a car like that driver is a massive difference. Hyundai have definitely come a long way too though
Only car hot hatch left to beat it is the new MK8 R….this race shows how much more power u need in a manual trans to keep up vs a dct. Wonder if an Accord Sport 2.0 would hang with the N?
Gearing helps with acceleration. Awd helps with launching. Having more gears help with delivering power for longer. Didn't really have that much to do with horsepower in this case.
@@OleMisss whoa… I used to ignore these things in traffic. I still do, but I used to, too. Pretty impressive given FWD hot hatch.. I’m extremely guilty of ignoring the Golf R as well and they are crazy quick. These comparisons have been rather sobering.
Impossible! It's definitely not the car! The Subaru driver doesn't know how to drive a Manual transmission. 😔 what about the Dccd controller? Wondering if He had it set on automatic.
I have 2019 sti and really not designed as drag strip car with the powertrain. Love mine but never bother trying to out drag the car next to me by abusing the clutch to get a launch. Just enjoy the transmission and do not agree that the transmission is trash by reviewer, no disrespect. Just hope if Subaru changes the transmission in the future is DCT and the so called performance CVT that is going into the 2022 wrx as option to the manual 6 speed.
I currently have a 2020 Hyundai Elantra GT N-line and I might upgrade to a base model WRX, unfortunately both the STI and Veloster N are kind of out of my budget. Carvana is offering almost 4k more than what I paid originally for the car. Great comparison video, looked very accurate and fair, and I appreciate keeping one camera angle per run.
Yikes I sold my wrx after having it for 2 weeks luckily only lost 2k but in my 2 weeks of ownership the base model wrx is really limited anything after 4K rpm’s it goes into limp mode. I now have the Elantra gt n line hatch and honestly by far a much better drive overall but that’s just my opinion just though I should comment because I thought it was funny that I did the opposite of what you’re trying to do lol.
@@jiujiubeans all you have to do is do a stage 1 tune to eliminate rev hang and the limp issue after 4k, also they fixed that issue for the 2020 models.
I'm in an Fa20 WRX pushing 425hp stock block and turbo. Do not let this clown who owned the WRX for .5 seconds. The WRX is the much better car out of the 3. With just a tune and a turbo back exhaust you're faster than any stock STI wishes it could be. The only downfall is anyone who has a 2015.5 + got the shittier suspension while mine came with the STI suspension. Just upgrade the car slowly over time and you'll have a car that's much more capable than an STI for much less money
Just bought my 2022 veloster n DCT and I can't stress how much video's do NOT do it justice. If i could go back in time i would chose the veloster every time!
For drag, it's best to use the base STI with the 18's, no sunroof, no harmen audio and no wing. I think that should help since you'll save quiet a bit of weight.
Try revving the Subaru to about three grand and dumping the clutch and when you shift, power shift. Every time you shift gears the H is pulling a car on you.
I was thinking about buying an N but my focus ST3 was so cheap ($12k w/ 30k miles) and is paid off. I think I’d rather put the money for mods. I’ll give it a year especially since the N has those new bucket seat. Open to other’s thoughts. Edit: I also, with todays market, got a $21k trade in offer for my ST which is very convincing
I liked this race a lot! I could tell you are enjoying it too! Maybe we can get GLI vs STI? Haven’t seen a GLI vid for many months now. Hope u don’t hate us :(
Sti gains proformance and reaction time after installing accessport and shines after proformance mod. Sti throttle respond is probably it's biggest weakness and 2nd gear hanging
Power to weight ratio being nearly equal the car with DCT will be hard to beat. Never much drop in power being applied since the next gear is pre-selected before the upshift giving very rapid upshift.
I’m not surprised by the outcome. The Subaru is a cow of a car. Also, automatics are becoming quicker than manual cars because of the technology within them. However. Which car are you going to have more fun off road, in the dirt, mud and snow? And saying that you can drive a MT vehicle gets you a pat on the back and a job at valet parking.
yeah the VN is still, and seemingly will continue to be available in both DCT and manual. Not sure why you said the new model is DCT only, unless you are referring to the Kona N.
A better driver in the STI could have shown different results you could see every time he shifted it jolted back. Hyundai is impressive for being a Hyundai but the wrx is defined and has so much history it’s hard to see what the Hyundai is going to be like in 10 years
I did not know I needed to watch this until I watched it! That SURGE on every gear change in the N is CRAZY! I bet it feels absolutely SAVAGE when you're driving it. Great Video! I will buy this car when I find a white one in AZ. When I went the dealer they only had the black one.
@@MWCRUSADER0508 No there is a surge. I've watched many videos if not all of them for the VN and thats what the NGS button helps with. The pops from the exhaust is anti-lag and when it shifts gears that power drops onto if causing a surge forward. Look at the video carefully when the subaru is not changing gears and you will see it.
@@georgevigil7001 No, the Veloster N does not "surge" on upshifts. What you're seeing is an artificial hard shift that Hyundai put in to make it feel nice and engaging. My C63 AMG has this as well and other AMGs do too. In my car, this is not activated when in comfort mode, which may be the same thing for the Veloster N.
It takes skills to launch STI,it takes skills to shift STI ,it takes skills to drive STI proper way sir ,calling that 6 speed bad transsmision just blowed my mind lmaoo... You took rally inspired car for drag racing ,which made fot attacking corners and apex ,made for quick accelerations to come out from it ,thatz why it has short gears. You didnt launch STI ,you shifted very poor and chocked the car .yes veloster is faster with that DCT ,but it was embarrassing to watch how poor driver mode can destroy car spirit ... At the end STI is way superrior drivers car for any type of road conditions than veloster N !.
I disagree I believe Sam Carlegion to be an excellent driver. With that being said if a car is fast it will show it there shouldn’t have to be a trick to how to shift a manual I am sure Sam Carlegion has driven thousands of manual transmissions. So with that being said the Veloster was just a faster car.
Even with the manual the veloster would win. Stock Sti's are over rated. The veloster N is drastically UNDER rated. The launch on the STI was pretty soft here. They can take much more abuse than that, bit the WRX cannot. The update of the WRX\STI cant come soon enough. The FA20 in the WRX was underpowered, and that EJ was ready to retire a long time ago.
@@higherarc0598 I will have to go back and look. From all the media outlets that reviewed both versions on the veloster N the DCT is only a couple tenths quicker in a 1\4 mile. If the STI beat the manual version this shouldnt have been the blowout that it was.
Did you ever think there would be a day that a fucken Hyundai would smack the shit out of a Subaru STI!!!!That DCT transmission is fast as fuck to switch gears. It’s a no contest. No wonder Subaru is getting rid of it.
It was pretty obvious people.. power to weight ratio was similar, so it came down to shifting and nowday's DCT is waaaaay faster than the manual transmission.
You are the best channel ever. On stressful days, your channel brings a nice ease into people’s mind with amazing races like this video! Both cars surprised me. Can we please get the ecoboost vs GLI next! I’m so excited for it
Hmm really? My grandmother would have won in that AT against the worlds worst manual stick driver... 🙄😂 A good (read average) driver would have won easily in the Sti... If he only would have launched correctly 🤦🏻♂️
Typically a modern DCT will walk an equally paired 6 speed rival. No surprise here at all. STI platform is a fucking dinosaur but will always hold a special place in the hearts of those of us who have owned one.
Fairly good matchup spec-wise; Subaru is AWD vs the FWD VN, VN is only a few pounds lighter and has a few more ponies (271 vs 275) so the biggest differences is just the transmission and drive train which AWD clearly gave the better launch but quickly lost pace. The DCT is doing legitimately all the work here in terms of difference, and that 8-speed is incredibly good; basically doing power-shifts / no-lift shifts between gear changes in N-mode which most folks don't normally do with their manual gearboxes without a tune for such a thing. Willing to bet an MT VN would be even closer, either tied or behind IMHO; it's quite a bit lighter without the DCT though so who knows.
The STI's launch was pretty poor though, you can 100% launch that STI without worry, their STI 6 speed transmission can handle over 3 times the factory power and twice the torque. Gearing is fine, just need to actually drive the car 😂
He “launched” that STI at like 2500 rpm and was on the clutch so long I went and made lunch 🤣 no hate just putting that out there lol. I personally prefer the gearing of the 5 speed manual in the WRX over the STI’s 6 speed.
No bro .. he is just doesnt have balls to launch or owner didnt allowed to launch ... Plus did u see he started roll race on sti 50km on 3rd gear where is 0 boost bro .... amd called he hate the tranny and gears lmfao !!!! I m not saying STI is faster ,but definitely it will put up a fight against that veloster ....
Sti driver just wasn’t accustomed with the car enough. Also kind of favoriting Hyundai with the DCT transmission since the guy in the Subaru clearly isn’t comfortable with the car. Launch was bad, shifts where probably bad too. Looks like he wasn’t staying in the boost between shifts (early shifting)? 2018+ models are a fulls second slower to 60 with the addition of the electronic diff anyways.
It's not the gears on the STI that are terrible. It's the factory tune. My 04 STI felt much faster out of the box. Fortunately this can be remedied with a Cobb ots, especially a good Dyno tune. Still I understand a dct is always going to be quicker, but I still love choosing my own gears.
