I agree. Let's not focus on age. And note that biological age and chronological age are NOT the same. Let's not let a number be a limiting belief on what we are still capable of and our focus. Not to mention, longevity science is rapidly changing. I recommend checking out the book Lifespan by David Sinclair. I have a lot to say about being happy as I am the same age as you and experience the same feelings. But first off, I would not worry about age. If you feel young and healthy, you are.

It’s very hard for us all over the world to advise someone in your circumstances in a country like japan. Many in the US will say “oh you could sell everything and move to Bali” or “become an influencer” or “your wife needs to work” or “you should work 9-5 not 8-6 or 7” but none of us are Japanese and the culture is very specific. I think it’s super brave and unusual to see a Japanese person (and certainly not Japanese man) to be so vulnerable and emotionally expressive. It’s an incredible piece of culture you are creating and maybe this is your challenge. You can systematize it and continue to explore the different parts of yourself. Don’t feel like you have to publish everything to the internet. You are ok.

@@askjapan9669Hello Sir, I have listened to your videos regarding your potential midlife crisis and I believe I can offer you a solution. However it may take you and your family to adopt a new way of life, nothing drastic from how you are living now but something I believe will impact you and your family to have endless happiness and success. First before I get into the solution I do not recommend you quit your job as then your “Little Problems” like for example: “My life is so boring” will turn into potentially big problems like for example: “ I will be short on my mortgage payments.” Discipline is a virtue, you strike me as a disciplined and responsible man so continue your course and always put your family first. As to the solution I recommend you consider in your spare time researching about Sunni Islam. I became a Muslim in 2018 and let me tell you it was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Islam gives you purpose the Quran has an answer for everything you may be seeking. I read that Islam is the fastest growing religion in Japan and that many ethnic Japanese are finding themselves in Islam. I realize the international media likes to portray Islam in a negative light but I can assure you that Islam is the religion of Peace, Love, and Happiness. Modern Japanese culture intermixes the Bushido Code of Conduct which centers upon being an Ethical and Hard working productive citizen together with the practical Modern and “go getter” mentality that has created Industry Giants like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hitachi to name a few…. The same can be said about Islam. In islam hard work is revered we are required to pray five times per day, we fast for an entire month to show our devotion and discipline to God and if you look to see the era of the Islamic Golden Age many scientific and mathematical nuances originated from the Middle East particularly and most notably Algebra. Islam also brings peoples together it is common for many Muslims to visit their Local Masjid’s (Mosque) on Friday for prayer and there you have the chance to make truly long lasting connections and friendships with fellow brothers who I am sure will love to get to know you and your family. In Islam it is also common for Muslims to give “zakat” which is charity, so for example if you are behind on your mortgage (God Forbid) and you speak to the Imam at the Mosque zakat will be requested of the attendees to help you and your family get through the challenges so that you can pay your mortgage. Islam is a Great Brotherhood and transcend the boundaries of ethnicity, languages, and culture at the end of the day you must do what you think is best but I assure you that you will find your purpose and happiness in Islam. Wishing you and your family all the very best in good health and blessings Sir.

Your wife may have to consider part-time work once both children are in full-time school. That will certainly help with finances and take off some pressure. You may also try to focus more on the simple pleasures of life. Read more, walk more, cook more, talk more. Above all, spend time with your wife and children, particularly outdoors and in nature.

From the outside looking at Japan, you have such a beautiful, orderly, clean society. However, i never understood your culture of working such long, long hours, and days. Have you considered writing a book? After doing so many videos where you are sharing your thoughts, you are probably naturally inclined for writing. I myself was in a rut in my early 20s. I had a crisis of meaning, and then I started writing short stories, scripts, and eventually a large novel after much study. Fast forwards 10 years and now I am a confident writer with a major work nearly edited. I am still unpublished. There is always that next hill to climb, after all. Maybe one day I'll try to get published, but the act giving it my all, gave me a great satisfaction. How I managed it was simple. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

One aspect that many non-Japanese do not comprehend fully is just how incredibly monotonous Japanese society and culture really is. You cannot appreciate the nuisances of this fact unless you live in Japan for as long as I have. I am sure there are exceptions and if you are financially well off but for most Japanese are strapped to this concept known as honne and tatemae. Japan and Japanese society are an anomoly and is not "normal" behavior in humans in other countries. There are Japanese men who literally do not know what to do. My next door neighbor having no hobbies sits with his wife watching television all day. He has no friends. It is like living in a nursing home without the care. There are thousands of Japanese men like this.

Hello, I completely agree with you. I have lived in Japan for 6 years now and my wife told me about honne and tatemae, It is rather strange and being from the UK/British It is weird to me. I have 2 kids and my wife is Japanese and I just turned 40. My Japanese is not great, to be fair I have been lazy to learn it. I have not managed to make any friends or if I do make any friends, they simply want to speak English and not actually make friends. My best friends are simply my wife and kids haha. I started making youtube videos too, not to become famous, just because I felt I might be able to reach out, although I dont have much time to make videos. Is it interesting to watch these videos and listen go an actual Japanese man speak about his feelings.

Honestly, I really just focus on what I need to do to get by. I'm 32, but I'm taking care of my two disabled parents. All of my focus is on making sure they are taken care of. Whatever happens in the future is irrelevant because my priority is the present. It's probably a bad idea, to be honest. I should be doing things now that set me up in the future, but at the end of the day, after work, and taking care of things at home, I don't really have the energy to do "more", even though I really should.

I work 40 hours a week as a software developer. It's fast paced and very stressful. I recently started getting back into game development since that's what I majored in college. I work on my game from about 7 PM to 11 PM, sometimes later. I take a break on Wednesdays after work and Saturdays. I live with my wife who is retired early. The bills all fall on me. I want to be able to retire before I hit 55. I am 50 now. Not necessarily retire but do things I enjoy. Some advice, throw the age thing out the window. It will only serve as an anchor and slow you down or stop you completely. Meaning it could cripple you. Find what you are passionate about and use that as your carrot on a stick and keep it dangled in front of you. Don't feel bad if you take breaks or do not have the amount of time you want to be able to spend on it. Ten minutes here, thirty minutes there, an hour, two hours, do what you can with the time you have and count that as a nice milestone regardless. One last thing to remember is the only security we can have in life is the security we create for ourselves. You can do this!

First, find a way to separate work and personal life. One of the drawbacks of working at home is that the two become intermingled to the point that a person feels like they are constantly working. Even if it's two hours a day, you have to carve out time for you. Find a challenge that you and your wife can do together, sharing the burden/successes. hey Askjapan - really enjoying your videos lately and thank you for keeping them coming :) i don't know much about your lifestyle and how physically active you are, but my recommendation would be to start working out (strength training + cardio). once you start changing your physiology, i think you'll notice that you have a lot more energy and motivation all across life. it can also be fun and rewarding to see physical changes and see yourself becoming stronger and more athletic. it also makes you feel like you are accomplishing something challenging, which you mentioned in this video. i know you're busy with your job and family but even if you can start working out 3 times a week in the gym for an hour, i think you could make a lot of progress at your age. it should not take that much time and the return on investment is very high. hope that helps :)

All that you talk about is not unique to Japan, it's universal with one's age. I'm 56 and in the USA. Your feelings are common for men in their 50's today. You would have more freedom and more options if your wife worked. There are benefits of having a spouse at home, but there are drawbacks too. You aren't earning a lot of money. I thought Japan was expensive, but it is no where near as expensive as the USA. Japan used to be a country that saved more money than they spent. More so than most countries. At .42% interest rate, Japan is in a bad place. It is irresponsible to keep interest rates this low. I must be missing something, .42% is not sustainable in a capitalist society interconnected with the world markets. Can you start your own company? The West loves Japan. You could start an export business, go work for a US company in Japan. Your bilingual skills are very marketable. Toyota is opening a battery plant near me, billions of dollars. You could come here and help the Japanese executives navigate the US. You could be an interpreter. You could make $1 million in the USA opening up an interpreter business.

I appreciate your honesty and candid talk about what's happening in your life. I have no kids, no spouse, not even a dog. It appears that I'm going to have to find a new job soon, and that can be difficult, since US employers don't seem to like hiring older people, even though that's technically illegal. Maybe your wife can take some kind of part time job after your kids are in school all day. That could help decrease your stress about finances - having 28 years left on a mortgage is a long time! Maybe you could be a full time RU-vidr, or start some kind of business. My rent is about half my take home pay, but i don't want to buy a place, because I'm trying to get Czech citizenship by descent so i can live in Europe, where the cost of living seems to be less than here in the US. Unfortunately, the Bank of Japan seems to have made some bad decisions that have led to the devaluation of the yen. But that seems to be bringing in more tourists. Maybe you could become a tour guide. I think you're pretty good at socializing, I could never make videos like you do! Although my job is tech support, so i have to talk to random people having computer problems all the time at work. The redeeming factors are that i work from home and i do 12 hour overnight shifts 3 days/week and every other Saturday. Maybe if you were able to get a job with a foreign company in Japan, you could enjoy an atmosphere that isn't predicated on staying at the office so long because it's tradition.

@@askjapan9669you know, there's two philosophies on that: one is to (get lucky and) know your passion and follow that. But the other is committing to something you're interested in and then gradually getting better at it, and then it starts to grow into a passion because you see results and thus becomes more fun. Just something to think about. Most people don't have that automagically. Personally I tried loads of things and eventually narrowed in on things I care about. It's a process. Some even say the path is the goal, not the destination. We are all rooting for you 💪

brother, life is hard but I think you have an ideal life that I'm working to build for myself. you and your wife are a great team and you look like a 35 year old man with a full head of hair and you have 2 children to keep you motivated to provide. I don't think your wife should work because I think you are a good man that has enabled this life for his family and her best role is to take care of you and the family especially at your children ages. I don't think I would quit your job without securing new employment at a new company to have a fresh start with them and be able to work for promotions there. I'm not a great socializer either I am just working on gaining new skills to get a higher income job but to me you have a lot of what I am working for. I feel like I have 1/3 life crisis every other day I can only imagine the mid life crisis I will have later lol but hopefully I'm doing as well as you by then :) I think you are doing a lot better than you tell your self and you should be proud of what you have built in life so far.

This isn’t advice for you. But for men in general, and can be modified according to situation. There are three primary duties of man: - The first duty is to oneself; maintain health and wellbeing. - The second duty is to your wife and family; ensuring they are cared for and loved. This includes being the provider, responsibility at work and professional relationships. - The third duty is to your parents and to your ancestors; to honor them. Master these duties and you master what it means to be a man

Can you teach us your audience about Japan, show us interesting spots tell us about it and its history if there is history connected to the spot, the basics of the Japanese language, show us how Japanese daily life works from your POV as a native? Also the social issues on Japan and your take on them? I think people will listen to whatever you would like to talk about especially since you communicate well and in a sincere manner. I think anything you share to give a window into the people, country, language, culture, daily living or even societal issues you care about will allow you to continue to have heart to heart conversations with your audience. This on turn will grow your audience and enable you to begin making an income via the channel.

Losing motivation and feeling flat can be related to hormonal imbalance, i highly recommend to test your testosterone levels, many 50 yr olds have to take testosterone replacement therapy, usually after this they gain back their motivation and drive. There is many natural ways to boost immunity ant hormon functions, If you feel like your life is boring and over at 50, something is not right, usually life of man starts at age of 50. 50 to 65 is the golden age, please dont waste it. Life and every day is new opportunity and gift, im really gratefull of my life. I work 60 hours per week, still i think life is precious and beautiful gift. Hello. I watched a few of your videos. It seems you are confused a little. When you married and had kids, that is a LIFECHANGING decision that you committed to. Life is like that EVERYWHERE. Now you are enslaved to ensuring the family are safe and healthy. For the next 15 years it is obvious your life is for your family until the kids are grown and left home. Thats all you need to be concerned about until you retire. I suggest the most important thing for you to do is work on staying healthy in mind and body so you can enjoy retirement with your family. RU-vid channel looks promising. PLEASE do NOT keep repeating "I am 50 years old". Get on with life and enjoy things. I understand the issues with elder parents and less elder parents in law. You are VERY lucky compared to lower class families. GOOD LUCK.

Life under capitalist societies. Work and consume. Nothing more, nothing less. Dreams, hopes, desires, creativity, philosophy, personal growth, connecting with others, learning about yourself, learning to love yourself, loving others, none of these things make money. So those with all the money make sure we have no time to do anything except work and consume. We have even less time now, and less money now on top of that.

this is the reason why i don't wanna marry and have kids, i lived in the third world where average salary ranges at 300-800 dollars a month. i am unemployed but doing some hustle and small business earning less than 1000 dollars a month. is it enough? my answer is NO. My home is free provided by my parents i am living with them My ulities i paid my food i paid i admit i am not good at saving money. i only have 200 dollars in my name my gf left me too now i lost some motivation to do my usual thing. how the hell this world have become. when things should be free . we need the government interaction to have things FREE when you have a family. like free homes.. free school, PRIVATE CORPORATIONS IS THE REASON WHY WORKING PEOPLE IS POOR. Also, male menopause or hormonal change at 50 is real. Talk to your doctor, use your paid holiday, if I may ask, what’s your hobby? Is good you are using RU-vid as an outlet. Do you have any time for exercise after work? You need at least a brisk walk for 45 minutes after working that many hours. Do you have big refrigerators like in the U.S. so maybe you don’t have to shop after work each day? Will your wife have many employment options in the future? Her income should go towards extra payments on your mortgage so maybe you get it down to at least 20 or 15 years. Hopefully you can retire between 65 to 70.

People are programmed robot slaves of the system thinking happyness starts with extern factors like status, money, material things that means nothing and its relativ and an illusion create by society. If your happyness depend on extern factors you will never be because extern factors are endless. Happyness starts inside you. The more people around you, the more expectations, talk about others, lying, frustrations, negativity, jealousy, double standards, violent, sneakyness, own benefits, judge, comparing etc..... reflection of their broken souls. Alone or in solitude you have more strength, peace, power, happyness, freedom and time. And no, not feeling superior or better then others but more be carefully and awake. Be the light in your own life. We born and die alone and in between we are all guests...... The here and now is where the magic happens

hello friend. My best advice to you is to slighly modify your sleeping schedule. Get 8 hours of sleep but wake up at 5 in the morning. At 9 you must be sleaping already. after you wakeup youll have like at least 2-3 hours to be productive and do what you want with no distractions. It's better to focus on this when you brains are fresh in the morning. Work is sucking the soul out of people, after a full work day you won't have as strong desire to do it. Rest with your family after work to recover. do the same thing on weekends and spend the rest of the day eith your family. I think it's a mistake to do chalanges after work, switch ut around. it will require discipline, but you can make it!!! 頑張れぇぇぇ!!

Just as you’ve been finding the free time to make these videos, maybe you could do something you would like to do as a challenge? The next question is what challenge do you want to do. I watched this video last night about a person on the internet who decided to create an official church of their anime waifu because it was funny, but it became so big that instead of people thinking that it’s weird they started to mostly get impressed. Maybe you would be interested in doing something that is personal to you that makes you laugh but be so talented at it that it will be world changing in that niche. Being the best at something is always a lot of fun, not because of the competition but because of the story and journey of all the exciting mind blowing things you could do in anticipation of doing the unthinkable.

It is impossible to do "extra challenges" if you have a regular job, there is too little time and energy. It is impossible. So maybe you (and I) are trapped. However, you could use your free time to socialise, challenge yourself to do it. Go and start conversations with strangers... I know it sounds insane but why not. It is a true challenge for you so, do it!

I am more or less in the same spot as you. I think the reason motivation goes down is tow fold: first testosterone goes and then all novelty is lost. Your inner ingrained motivation to explore and fight to win is gone along with testosterone (besides, we already have kids, we already won in the evolutionary sense) and then most novelty in life is gone because you have already seen, tried, done most. A midlife crisis is an existential crisis and a crisis of faith. So what now? I think life motivation has be different and more sophisticated at 50. We have to stop listening to children (anyone under 40) and we have to improve the sophistication of our thinking. This is why I am reading more Schopenhauer, more Saint Augustine, more Nietzsche and I am watching more Kieślowski, more Felini, and more Werner Herzog... so essentially, embrace becoming a fifty year old man and stop trying to regain my youth (which in itself is difficult in our infantile youth-worshipping society).
