New M2 Apple MacBooks are here and they're more powerful than the previous M1 version. Still, are they powerful enough to switch to? Spoiler alert: Marques doesn't think so. Besides that, he talks with Andrew and David about the Mac Mini too which is a sneaky great deal.

The expectation that consumers should be looking to upgrading their computer every year is reinforced by tech RU-vidrs. People can get really upset by year spec bumps. I don’t get upset because I want to keep my computer for at least 5 years. If they increase the speed b y 20% year over year that is just fine for me.

Exactly. I've had the M1 MacBook Pro 16in for a little over one month now and could easily upgrade to the M2, but I'm not interested since the M1 does exactly what I need it to do and it's not like I'm maximizing the performance out with the type of work I do. I learned a long time ago upgrading your devices every single year so you have the newest model is a big waste of money because it's never ending. Hell, I would still be using my 2019 MacBook Pro if my display worked and keyboard wasn't broken which is the reason for me getting the 2021 since it wouldn't have been worth it to put God knows how much money into fixing an uninsured 2019.

Honestly as an average user, I haven’t hit the limits of M1 MacBook Air yet. Had some heating instances/battery drain with M1 IPad Air but under some extreme circumstances. IE I use the M1 IPad Air as a main driver now. Like 10 apps open, 4 slide over apps and a RU-vid video PiP -> no issues. Ironically the heating instances came from having a RU-vid in PiP and using Apple Pencil in GoodNotes. Or heating up when playing Apple Music while marking up photos in the photos app. M1 in any form is pretty muscle for the average user.

I think they got the explanation of HDMI ARC a bit confused. From what I know. ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. This has been on HDMI and TVs for a while. I been using ARC since 2016. Not sure what version of HDMI was back then. But the purpose of ARC was to simplify HDMi connections by having all HDMI devices connected to TV and TV would be connected to Sound System via ARC HDMi port on TV to ARC port on HDMI ARC port (very useful on Sound Bars with few HMDI in ports). This mean all HDMi audio gets passed to the TV and the TV then passes it to the ARC port to Sound System The benefits are devices like DVD players or Streaming devices can be controlled by TV remote. Switching device being displayed can also be done by TV remote. This is different than connecting all devices to Sound System and having the Video Passed to the TV . If the sound system is an older sound bar like mine. Its able to pass through 4K video but not HDR. Basically all of my HDR device MUST be connected directly to TV. All HDMI control and device switching is done via Sound System Remote for devices connected to Sound System not TV. I believe eARC is Enhanced Audio Return Channel. It basically does everything ARC does but supports Audio formats that ARC doesn’t. eARC TVs support regular ARC mode on the eARC port and can be manually set eARC on or off. Off being old school ARC.

5:51 so this has actually existed for a while, like the better part of a decade while, in the form of standard ARC. eARC is exclusive to HDMI 2.1, yes but it effectively just adds a ton of bandwidth which can support any high end audio codec like Dolby Atmos, DTSX, etc. that requires the additional bandwidth to return audio to your external speakers.

That doesn't even have to do anything with Intel, more power generates more heat. I believe they deliberately crumbled the cooling on their Intel Macbooks and now the saviour-chips from Apple are here. That combined with the shit keyboard that they used for several generations while promising every time that issues are now resolved will keep me from buying their Macbooks ever again. The M1 devices represented a massive shift in technology that turned a product that was unjustifiably expensive for what it brought to the table, finally giving it a reason to not only to exist, but to be probably the best option for many people. The M2 went back to a slight spec bump with a few new features. It came out as the economy was tanking, and it doesn't make the most sense for anybody but the most demanding of power users because you could (and still can) find the older model that isn't that much slower at a significantly reduced price, like the 14" base model for $1599, and the 16" base model for $1999.

Ive recently come across an issue with Intel core I3, I5, I7, I9 processors, I got a message that these are no longer supported and therefore there will be no more OS updates passed Catalina, and now my apps won't update until I update the OS that can't be updated as not supported with hardware. Is this likely to be an issue going forward with the M series processors, or is this less likely as the M series are built by Apple for Apple where as Intel was not built by Apple?

Guys I need some advice. I have some issues with my laptop of 4 years so I'm going to switch. I am a lifelong windows user but I want to try out the macbook. At the moment there are the M1 Air, M2 Air, M2 Pro (these 2 M2 i heard are not good) and then the new M2 Pro chips with the M3 chips on the way. Can you please give me advice on which macbook to purchase? I am leaning to getting the 16 GB, 1TB 14 inch M2pro chip but it is a lot of money. I heard a lot of good things about the 14 inch M1 pro but i cannot find that anywhere online. What would you guys do?

After watching all of the announcements about M2 Pro and Max it sounds like a solid improvement over M1 Pro and Max. There is nothing wrong with an iterative update to the product. That’s much better than stagnation. If you have an M1 Pro or Max, then it’s not worth upgrading. If you are using an intel powered Mac, then it is time to upgrade. If you bought a 16” Pro in 2019, buy an M2 16” MacBook Pro. You really should upgrade.

Light image creation with affinity designer. Great machine! Should easily last 5 years.

That there is no Mac Pro on the M2* makes this chip sort of a stop gap and I expect some major design work being done with M3 to address short comings, the M series is still very weak compared to dedicate GPU solutions so either ramp that up or find a way to allow for offloading to one

Im so happy with my M1 mac mini. It does everything I need. So if you're still using a intel chip mac then the upgrade would be great for you. Or if you never owned a mac before. Other than that, M1 to M2 is not worth the upgrade. Unless you ran out of storage on your M1 and you want to trade up.

Macs are notorious for lasting several years to a decade on average. Nowadays, they're likely rated to last longer maybe given the advancement in tech over the years. 3 weeks ago, I upgraded from a 2015 Air to an M1 Pro MBP (massive upgrade indeed) and I do semi heavy work on it still having yet to come close to maxing out the chip's potential. If ultra tech savvy RU-vidrs said there's really just no need to jump for small spec bumps, that should say a lot. That's not even limited to Macs but applies to most tech in general. They said it best when they mentioned M2 is for those coming from much older devices, but really it just depends on which gives the better deal. In my case, Apple basically gave away the M1 MBP and I couldn't pass up.

If and when a so called M4 comes out I'll be anticipating the M6 instead, because by then, the design might actually be pure minimalist design. Where I'll get all screen, without the noise of an unsightly notch with no functionality to justify its ginormous presence. I want to use superior external capture devices. I love four USB C ports, I really don't mind dongles. First world problems don't affect me like most people. I wanna use my wired headphones and wired speakers, I love options rather than restricted by unnecessary tech inside my ultra thin and light, desktops replacement. Why would I want so many ports and so much battery capacity if it's my desktop replacement? When I travel with it, I'm going to adjust my use according to need not as if I'm always gonna be using it out as though I'm at home. I just want a beautiful design, like the current M2 Airs, but with all screen, no web cam no mic, no speakers. All keyboard like those big square arrow keys and shallow key travel, because i never eat or drink while working. I even Loved the touch bar, I have no desire for function keys, eww. I don't need face ID I don't need a fingerprint reader. I'm not CIA. I want the future. I don't want tiny upgrades. Don't tease me don't patronize me. LoL ! Right ?

Neither did I. I got instead 16 inch m2 pro chip MacBook Pro with Touch ID and advise use thumb when doing it since everyone thumb print is different. Note avoid arcade from App Store high res. Games like tomb raider or 2k sports since they run battery done faster then it would if playing farming simulator game like township or game of solitaire. Above all 3rd party application games like Plarium play. Where you need 4k res and max frame and refresh rate you can do be sure connected to power source or have fully charged battery.

I wish Apple would provide a version of the Macbook, that has the minimum processor (Like a base M1 or M2), and a larger screen, (like a 15"/16"). I would have loved something like a Macbook Air 15"/16". I'm a designer. The M1 chip is way more than good enough for most of the design work I do. So it would have been nice if I didnt have to have a more budget friendly large screen option.

the only people who should realistically be upgrading to m2 are people who still have intel computers. heck, I’d even just tell them to get a cheaper M1 device just because the M1 chips are still really good today.
