I’ve Never Owned an EV……So I Bought A TESLA!

I’ve always wanted a Tesla, not because it’s an EV but because it has FSD. Ever since test driving a model 3 way back in 2019 I was convinced a Tesla would be my next car. However at the time my wife drove an old 2011 Malibu and I didn’t want to have to use that Malibu for family road tripping. Although road tripping an EV isn’t that bad and is getting better each day it was just something I didn’t want to mess with. So I leased a 2019 Ram 1500, a vehicle I planned to have until my wife got a new car. However we all know what happened in 2020 and I ended up buying out my lease as that was the only real option. Fast forward to 2024 my wife now drives a 2021 GMC Arcadia so I was back in the market. While I waited I decided I wanted something with a bit more performance then a long range model Y so I decided I get the New 2024 model 3 performance. After having this car now for about a month and driving it just shy of 1000 miles what are my thoughts and did I make the right choice.

My car was in the shop for 2 weeks (transmission...don't ask) so I went to Hertz and they gave me a Tesla Model 3. Many people told me it would suck...so each day I would wait for it to suck but it never did. Actually, I thought it was pretty cool, quiet, comfortable, relatively fast and charging was never a problem. Most people who said it would suck...didn't have a clue.

We thought we'd use the Toyota Camry for road trips, but it turns out the Model 3 so much more fun to drive, has better cargo space and charging with Superchargers was easy. I need those breaks every 2-3 hours too. With planning, we take it to remote locations as well.

I bought a 2024 MYLR a few months back. I have never enjoyed driving a car so much in my life, not even the sports cars I have had. I now spend about 25% of what I was spending on gas to power this car, and FSD - as imperfect as it can be sometimes - has already prevented me from having multiple accidents. If you think about it, having the FSD prevent even one accident that would have totaled the car effectively pays for the car by doing so. I got FSD because no matter how safe a driver I am, I still cannot prevent others from crashing into my car (2x in the last 11 months, one drunk and one playing on her phone). So to keep my family safe, I bought the safest car I could find (a Tesla Model Y) and got FSD. As long as no more idiots crash into me, I expect to have this car until the battery self destructs from age in 15 to 18 years. At that point, with how the price of batteries is going down and the range is going up, if they still make batteries that fit this car I'd bet a dollar that a 1,250 mile battery will cost something like $25. The value you get from Tesla vs the price is incredible, especially when you keep the car for a long time.

@@noseboop4354 _You're a pretty bad driver if you need driving aids to avoid accidents_ What you seem unaware of is that one of the great benefits of FSD or Autopilot is that they're *always* aware of what's going on 360° around the car, and can react instantly to a threat from any direction; while a human driver can only be aware of what's going on where he's looking at the moment, and even then has a substantial delay before taking any action. *That's* why Teslas with FSD engaged have orders of magnitude fewer accidents, injuries and fatalities that average drivers.
@noseboop4354
@noseboop4354 6 дней назад
@@BigBen621 Have you looked at global vehicle accident stats? Injuries and fatalies on the road are fives times higher in the USA than most european countries. A testament to how bad the drivers are due to poor education and very low standards to get a license. In places like Germany and Norway where people learn how to do defensive driving, accidents are higher with full FSD because the roads in Europe aren't all straight and well marked, they twist around, have more pedestrians and cyclists, and traffic lights are at the beginning of the intersection, much harder for cameras to see, rather than the other side of the intersection. Driving aids for cars is the same as flying aids for pilots, it helps bad pilots from making stupid mistakes, but doesn't help them become good pilots.

@@noseboop4354 _Have you looked at global vehicle accident stats?_ Not particularly relevant to a discussion of FSD in the U.S. _ In places like Germany and Norway where people learn how to do defensive driving, accidents are higher with full FSD because the roads in Europe aren't all straight and well marked_ Not sure what you're saying here. FSD isn't available in these countries; where is it you're claiming accidents are higher with full FSD? _Driving aids for cars is the same as flying aids for pilots_ I would think your claims about high accident rates in the US would increase the argument for driving aids, especially since FSD (Supervised) is demonstrated to reduce accidents, injuries and deaths so dramatically.

I wasn't convinced on road-tripping an EV until a buddy walked me through the typical fill-up at a gas station and a typical charging stop. I won't go into the same level of detail (because it was boring) but the tl;dr was that you pull up, gas up, move the car, use the bathroom, get back to/in the car, and head out. I think he added it up to about 15min. He then did the same for an EV stop where you park, plug in, use the bathroom, get back to/in the car which took 12min. His (and my) _typical_ charge time is about 20min (just 5min more than gas). Needless to say, he talked me into giving it a shot and he was pretty much spot-on. Now, this _does_ fall apart a little bit in those rare situations where you need to charge for 40min, but that's the exception (not the norm) and I just make those stops the times I eat. You gotta' plan a little ahead to make sure the stop either has someplace with food nearby, or that you'll be rolling up to the charger with food in-hand, but doing that planning is how I spend those surplus 8 minutes at the previous stop.
@tozzasque

Most of the time, my Tesla will fill up way before I've done with bathroom, or with my meal if it's a long one. Put simply, the narrative that EVs take ages to recharge is just that: a narrative.

Unless you have a bad charging network in your state, I would argue the Tesla is better at long trips compared to your ICE car. You have the self driving which is so incredibly relaxing to use and every 3-4 hours you go for a break and charge it up.

I took my Tesla on a 2 weeks, 2000 mile, road trip from MN to CO and back and loved it. There was only 1 day I worried about charging (Durango, CO and I didn't want to drive an hour into NM just to drive back) but the rest of the drive the humans had to stop more often the car needed to. It was great. Road tripping in a Tesla is awesome!

Yes, we love road trips with our Tesla, never had the charging anxiety because the navigation tells you where all the superchargers are on your routes, it calculates as you go, even warms up your battery before you get there. Road trips become so enjoyable, no more gas stations and dirty toilets, most Tesla superchargers have restaurants, shopping and coffee shops. Perfect for a 15 to 30 minute break. Not to mention the navigation is so good in strange places, never gets lost again. Definitely should take it for your road trips.

You should at least try using it on a road trip. It’s honestly not that big of a deal. You can drive for around 4 hours and most people will need a bathroom break after that long anyway. By the time you all use the restroom and possibly buy snacks or drinks, your car is charged up. Will the total trip take longer? Yeah but only by a little bit. But it will be drastically cheaper and more pleasant of a trip thanks to FSD. You won’t be as tired because you can relax your brain by letting the car do the bitch-work of driving.

Nice! I have a 2019 Model 3 LR AWD that I paid for the acceleration boost for (mid 3 second 0-60). A 2025+ Performance 3 might be the next one. Glad to see some footage of it. It is our only car, and I don't have any issues road tripping w/ the abundance of superchargers. Navigation takes care of the worry. Most charging stops aren't to 100% and you're stopping every 2 or so hours for 20 minutes, which is plenty of time to stretch, use the facilities, etc.

Don't be afraid to road trip it, and ignore the range estimate but trust the arrival %. The other day I went to visit family 100 miles away, I forgot to change the charge limit so we left with 80%, drove arround a lot after we got there going to dinner, park, hockey arena, ect. and left for home with 35% the car said arrival with 1% so I didn't charge. When I got home I had 1% I didn't even have to slow down, it just knows how I drive. Also the best thing to know is you should leave superchargers a little before it tells you, so you arrive with less than 10%. You charge fastest with a low battery and doing this turns a 20 min charge to a 13 min charge every 200 miles. We love our Teslas, and while I think there are use cases for trucks, I do think EV technology is mostly going to overtake most of the market. As far as I'm concerned, people should get what they want, but I think more people are gonna want Teslas.

I live in Melbourne Australia and drove (in my S75D) to Brisbane Australia which is around 1800km which I believe qualifies as a road trip, and it went so well that my wife that tends to panic over anything different and it was so seamless and organised (by the car) that my wife found it was something she would want. Note that charging infrastructure is way more Spartan than in the USA. Every 2-3 hours we'd stop for a coffee and/or a snack and twice we overnighted. It was totally non-stressful and didn't take much longer than it would've in an ICE car. The whole things that EV's are bad for road trips just doesn't hold water most trips, and certainly any I've done.

We tend to keep cars forever and pass them down in the family. Teslas are so much fun to drive and quietly outperform any “ normal “ sedan. The S is much more comfortable, with longer wheelbase etc. , but a rolls Royce would be better too, but not on the wallet! The money you save on gas versus your old gas guzzling truck probably pays you over $300.00-$500.00 for every 1000 miles you drive. I have a 2009 Toyota Tacoma 4-wheel drive, and it has been a great truck, but I get around 15 mpg in town. Gas is near $4.00 per gallon and I was spending close to $75.00 to fill it up and drive about 250 miles. I bought a used Model 3 Tesla and it costs me around $7.75 to charge it 0-100%. One charge gives me around 240 miles range in when it is not too hot. So I save about $70.00 every time I drive 250 miles roughly, or about $300.00 for every 1000 miles I drive. Because I got the $4000.00 government rebate when I bought the car, if I drive it 65,000 miles, it will literally have paid for itself. So it was kind of a no-brainer financially. I plan to keep the car a couple of years and when solid-state batteries come out, sell it and buy a new vehicle. Meanwhile I have the use of a car that was over $50k new and it is only two years old (it's a 2022 Model 3). It has FSD capability, the new, advanced heat pump, LFP batteries, matrix headlights and all of the advanced hardware features the 2024 Model 3 has. It's not as quiet and it doesn't have the upgraded suspension, but after 65k miles, it will be free. It really is an amazing car and it's tons of fun to drive. It goes 0-60 in 5.8 seconds or less, which is far quicker than the vast majority of cars on the road currently. It seems faster than its ratings. Your Performance Model 3 is a step up from mine. You literally are faster than most Porsches and Ferraris. It appears to be the perfect car for you. I wish you the best.

@noseboop4354 Actually, this subsidy for used EVs makes these cars unbelievably affordable to the poor. Case in point, a blue collar carpenter making $25.00 an hour could have bought the 2022 Model 3 I purchased and would have payments around $250.00 a month. That same carpenter would save $400 - $500 a month in gas where I live. So buying a Model 3 would put $250.00 a month back in the carpenter's pocket. Try to think before you speak. It will save you a lot of humiliation in life. And no, I am not a Democrat and I don't vote for Democrats. But that doesn't change the reality of what I am saying.

I've had my Model 3 for three years now as my only vehicle. I still really like it, although I do miss my 2017 Mustang GT that I traded it in for, even if it was a tad slower 0-60. I dunno, maybe I'll buy one back again. Other than that I would never go back to full gas for a daily. No maintenance and $7 for 200 miles is way too nice. Maybe a good plug in hybrid, but no one makes a decent one yet. They're all very low EV range that can't even cover 1/2 my commute. Having said that I've taken the tesla on many US road trips without much drama. I live in MN, so getting anywhere cool takes a long time. Been to Kentucky, Yellowstone, Missouri, Michigan, Indiana, and more. The times I've travelled with other people using gas vehicles they weren't really waiting on me as most people wanted a stop break every few hours anyway. What we really need are more level 2 charges at hotels. That would make road and work trips a lot easier.

FSD is probably the best feature of Teslas outside of the performance (and I suppose the charging network). I wish they were better about repairs. I want to own my car outright and be it's master but I'm not sure that's possible with a Tesla and their approach to vehicle design. I bought a new Civic recently and like it very much (with the port-injected engine and a manual). But it's definitely not the speed demon the Tesla is, and it's hard to deny the appeal of instant freeway mergers.

FSD feels like a teen who just got their license is driving, I didn't keep it, may pay for it during a road trip. I roadtrip my model Y from NC to Miami every winter, no issues. When you get an issue with FSD, press the right button and say "report bug, car not slowing down in a school zone" for example.

Although having to charge every 200 miles or less sucks on a long trip, having FSD handle all of the highway driving is great and cherry on top is when you get to a new city that you are not familiar with, it can navigate for you which takes away the stress. I wish Tesla made better vehicles, I can’t imagine having to drive myself after experiencing FSD.

My advice would be to consider the S3XY KNOB. Lack of stalks in the UK might be a bit problematic as we have roundabouts where you will indicate one way when you join, then your steering wheel may be inverted and you need to indicate the other way to show other drivers you are turning off. I guess we would get used to it and make it work - but it has been designed for a certain driving culture by people embedded in that culture.

I can't really agree with the turn signal buttons. For basic use cases? Yeah, they're fine. I'd still prefer stalks as I don't gain anything from not having them, but at least the buttons are serviceable. Although, I did say "basic use", and that's because the one problem that the buttons have is that they're not stationary. So, if you happen to need to make successive signals, you *better* think ahead and get your hand in the right place. For example, the local hospital has a parking lot where I turn right to go into it, and immediately after turning into it, you have to either turn left or right. Another example is a local restaurant where I take the entrance that happens to be right beside a rounded corner, so I'm already turning right and then I need to signal right to turn in there. A lot of that highlights my biggest problem with Tesla's approach... they have this inane desire to try to create solutions for problems that don't exist. Now, don't get me wrong... if someone really wants the buttons, more power to them. I think Tesla *should* offer them as an option as some people do seem to really like them. Now, there are other things that aren't easy to access either... namely the wipers and lights, which are functions commonly found on the stalks. Awkwardly, they've sort of addressed the wipers as if you press the single wipe button the steering wheel, it will bring up a menu that can be controlled by the left wheel. (That function has been on the Model S/X for a bit and was just added to the 3/Y.) A part of me both likes and hates it... because it gets in the way of volume control and yet again, it's just a hackneyed solution for a problem that Tesla created. Unfortunately, the lights do not have a function like that and the voice command -- in my experience -- does not control the headlights at all (even just for turning them on). So, we have a '21 Model S and a '24 Model Y, and one thing that I'm not a fan of on the Model Y was the removal of the ultrasonic sensors. The car tries to use the cameras to give you information on what's around you, but it needs ample light (that's why Tesla's auto-wiper functionality is terrible at night), so there's often a warning about the functionality being degraded. On the flip side, I have zero issues in my Model S using the sensors. (Note that I am allowed to use either function and can simple select which one I want in the options.) The sad part is... I had an '18 Model 3 before the Model S, and I actually wanted to get a non-Tesla EV, but... I just couldn't find a good one. I looked into the Mustang Mach-E, but I wasn't very impressed. No heat pump for colder driving? Archaic infotainment? A tiny trunk area in a crossover? My biggest thing is that I wish Tesla, or more specifically, Elon Musk, would stop with the incessant need to wreck their designs just for FSD. It's frustrating to see a car lose a bunch of physical controls "because you won't need them" when you have to pay another $8000 (or $100 per month) to get the feature that supposedly makes you not need them. I'm of the opinion that if you want to remove features as they're redundant due to self-driving, then self-driving needs to be free with the car. Speaking of FSD, I had FSD on my '18 Model 3 as it was $3000 at purchase. Actually, it was the same price as it is now since it was $5000 for EAP and $3000 for FSD, and the current $8000 includes both EAP and FSD. Anyway, I tried it out with the Model 3 when v11 was the current version, and it handled simpler driving without much of a problem, but I did *NOT* like it on slower side streets. The one situation that still sticks out in my mind is when I was pulling out of a side street onto a hill, and the car kept inching forward into the lane because it couldn't see down the hill to determine if there was oncoming traffic. On the other hand, I could just lean forward and see that yes... there was oncoming traffic and the car was most definitely getting in their way. Seeing down the hill required use of the B-pillar cameras which are just way too far back. I mean... I had to stick my head forward just to see and that would require a camera on the A-pillar to have a fairly functional equivalent. I also receive the month trial on my Model S, which allowed me to see how v12 compared to v11. I definitely saw that v12 was better than v11, but... the best way to describe it is that it's like driving with someone on a learner's permit that has no understanding of the area. I was driving on an off-ramp that awkwardly splits into two lanes for a portion and then goes back to one. (I have no idea why it does that.) So, which lane did the car choose? None, it drove in the middle. It also does not understand how to turn into the correct lane, which puts it in the same league as most drivers around here. 😅 I was in a left turn lane turning into a road that had two lanes for my direction. Since I was turning left, I needed to turn into the left lane where opposing traffic would make a right turn into the right lane. What did the car do? It drove in the middle. I guess one thing for me is that I've never really understood the idea of "road fatigue". I don't get tired driving unless I'm just literally tired. Like the time I drove around 900 miles to get to my sister's wedding and I started at 12 AM after doing a normal day at work. I didn't get there until around 4:30 PM and it was fine.

What I really love (esp on Road Trips) is the Autosteer. Plus if I put on my signal it will automatically change into the lane for me (if its safe) which is cool. The Model 3 is really nice but the Y was just more practical for me and the family having the extra space. A lot of fun driving this vehicle. BTW when in FSD/Autosteer and it starts nagging you for some steering wheel feedback you can just move up/down any one of the scroll wheels just even one click and you're good.

the problem with tesla not offering android auto or car play is the long term support. eventually your car will go EoL in terms of software support but it may still be perfectly safe to drive as a second third or forth hand vehicle for someone else especially with battery replacements assuming they become more readily available. if tesla stops supporting their software and something causes a breaking change that makes allot of the software accessories to stop working atleast in terms of phone linking, its moot at that point. adding android auto or carplay or both will allow the vehicle to maintain the phone linking features with a different package sure but it will be there.
