SVS, like many, many other subwoofer companies has it's plate amps made in China, if I'm not mistaken. The inconsistencies with manufacturing in Chinese factories is notorious and one plate amp is never the same as another, hence why the other SVS amps were fine. Don't trash SVS yet, it's just a bad egg in a very, very large basket. They will replace it quickly.

I know a bit about this and actually it has nothing to do with the amplifier. The issue is the sub-woofer, its using first generation peerless sub-woofer the rated power of that woofer is 120Wrms, 250W peak (XXLS‑P835017), this design are used for home theater applications where bass isn't constant, theater material has peaks of bass lasting only few seconds. They SVS has invested in designing newer woofers that are able to sustain longer bass cycles. (I doubt they got this right) A good, durable sub-woofer by far is still the JL Audio W6, W7 models, but these are expensive and you get what you pay for.

in fact, the amplifier is over-sized, they override their sub-woofers (except the PB-4000) that thing is a beast.

Yaghiyah Brenner JL subs are extremely durable. I had 2 15” JL subs in my 79 Z28 for the longest time without issue. It wasn’t until I took them out and put them in storage. I was going to sell them and after 5 years in storage the surrounds(rubber) of the subs started to disintegrate. Other than that 8 years in a trunk was a good lifespan.

Thats the thing with electronics . Sometimes they just go out. I had a brand new sub break on me in 20 minutes. Then got a replacement .( same sub) Thing still works 21 years later.

sine waves drive the subs alot, pull a lot of power from the amps to do that driving. they tend to pull twice as much power than music. so the volume levels u may acheive with music, tend to destroy even the heartiest of subs, when played for more than a few seconds. in teh car world we know it as burping. some subs can take up to 20kwrms in three second burps, but only use up to 2kwrms on music.

The sub would typically have a heat sensor in the coils that would shut the amp off at a certain temp. The problem is that its difficult to test the heat sensing and shutoff at the manufacturer without stressing the sub which they don't want to do. Its kind of like an airbag in a car. No way to really know it works without crashing the car.

@@vongdong10 Exactly, that's why Ive seen about 3,000 reviews on them in the last ten months, gets pretty old. And boring to the extreme. SVS is the Apple of subwoofers, and granted, Apple is the best stuff out there, there are others who compete with them and have some pretty worthwhile products for half the price. Not everyone needs hard-core professional level equipment like Apple or SVS.

@@quintah Yeah, I can see why you say SVS is like Apple but I wouldn't say SVS has professional level stuff. They just have that premium pricetag. There are a few brands out there that outperform SVS for less money. SVS is all over youtube but I see HSU, PSA, Rythmik and the Monolith recommended quite a lot on forums and reddit. I was in the market for dual subs, thought about getting the PB3000's but ended up with Rythmik FV18's for not much more and they outperform the PB16 Ultra's.

Hsu makes some fantastic subs, but they are a little shy when it comes to sending out units for testing and review. So if one wants to do an actual review of their subs, measure them and so on - they need to fork out their own pocket money, pay for the (rather high) shipping cost and then wait for it. That's why you don't see as many reviews on Hsu research subs when it comes to youtubers and publications. You read more about them in forums from user reviews and opinions instead.

Odd that so many are freaking out about the pb 3000 blowing when the sb3000 was fine. Unless I understand the line incorrectly they are the exact same driver and amp in a different enclosure. The SB seemed just fine. So it leads me to believe that in this torture test that this particular svs had an issue which came about when tortured. Nobody actually uses a sub like this. In fact that sub might have been fine for a lifetime if used how most of us would use it.

Sealed driver got different power handling. It has advantage at higher frequencies and requires more power to produce the same sound because of pressure in sealed enclosure that pushes the driver to restinf position

about 30 seconds in, those coils would have been super hot with a +15db boost in audio signal on top of what looked to be a youtube video's audio test tone (which has its own possible clipping) its no surprise the coil popped. Seems that was the point of the video. Entertaining no less. Not sure why you wouldn't expect that to happen. 1/2

it probably fried because sinewaves have about 8 times the average power compared to normal music or film program. neither speakers nor amplifiers are designed to withstand sinewaves. 1/8th sinewave power is considered full power. this is why 2,500 watt output Crown XLS amplifier has only 400 watt input rating at 120V - because it isn't designed to output sinewaves. however it was not your fault because a good product should have went into protect mode instead of blowing up.

be careful with sine waves, they put a lot of stress on equipment, probably why one of them died. Sine waves should really only be used in short bursts for calibration purposes. If you just want to be impressed by the amount of power a speaker has, playing a bass intense movie is much safer.

Could you send back the sub to svs and have them see what happen ? I also have two of them and one is making a strange noise " a lite one like sum thing is rubbing on the cone"" this happen after watching Aquaman not at a very loud volume .I think it might be the voice coil. Gotta suspect its a supply of power issue. How did you feed all the power to these? All on their own different breaker? If not perhaps a large voltage drop killed the amp in one of them, or even burned the voice coil from the amp not being supplied ample power/voltage. The SB4000 alone almost needs its own 15A circuit. The SB and PB3000 might be ok on another circuit together... at full tilt your looking at up to ~3300 watts continuous. You cant pull that from a single or even 2 standard 15A circuits.

i was thinking about buying a pair of 3000's but not after i saw this. i've had 3 SB16 failures in 6 months, i'm not happy with SVS, and the best they will do is give me 5% off. screw that, i can get 20% off svs at best buy. i say they should give me another sb16 and call it even. if not i need to look for another sub manufacturer. i regret selling my pair of martin logan descent-i's.

This is a discouraging post. I have ML depth-i subs which are 300w each and are just not enough power to pressurize my room. Was looking at SB3000s/SB4000s to supplement/replace the depth-i subs, but I keep seeing YT and forum posts of blown SVS amps and drivers. May just move to the Dynamo’s or look at Paradigm SW.

Damn, was looking forward to the outcome. Just a thought tho.... Maybe it's time to upgrade to multiple 20amp circuits. That was well over 4000k watts. Volts x Amp Circuit = max Watts output. It makes a huge difference. J/S brother 👍🏽

when you turn the gain of an amplifier fully open, the amplifier will clip, this ensures equal voltage on the woofer! consequence .... burning of the voice coil or faulty amplifier output stage.distortion kills audio equipment (and your ears)

How do you know the Monolith was the same volume? Cone excursion is not the only variable of volume. Cone size, moving mass, motor strength, surround and spider compliance, tuning, etc. also affect output at any given frequency. Just say'n.

Music tend to go up and down on peaks, that’s why a speaker can go to it limits cause music hit that top limit just for less than a second, is not the same when you test a speakers over it limits for more than a minute. You should keep your test just under its nominal/RMS peaks and not it limit peaks when testing.

Great video! This video made me laugh a little bit. All the numerous videos and reviews of the 3000 series performing up to the level of the 4000. They’re simply pushing that little 3000 series driver too hard to get that kind of performance imo. I would spend the extra coin and get the MUCH beefier 4000 series driver every day of the week. Who the heck wants to worry about their sub burning up every time they push up the volume. No thanks.

You don’t need to worry as this won’t happen with normal listening plus you have the SVS warranty anyway. The 3000 series sounds better due to the light weight cone, regardless of how ‘beefie’ the 4000 is. Sometimes you want a bit of finesse.

Basically playing tones at loud volumes is bad for subs because it overheats the voice coil

@@tHAvIlLaMaN Yea but that only happens when you have clipped signal (square waves instead of pure sine) or too much power. And since SVS constructed this sub from start to finish, they sure matched the woofer heat dissipation capabilites to an amplifier right? Nobody will put the 500W capable driver into a 2kW amplifier because cranking the gain up will result in burned coil (too much heat to dissipate). So.. to me it's either clipping or the driver itself is not good for this amp.

Hahaha...Way to go Villa - blow the woofer at max volume..Interesting the SB 3000 didn't crap out. That's one tough puppy. Well just bought the SB-2000 and headed here. I think that one will be ok.

Yes. That burned out the voice coil. That’s certainly a voice coil!! Running low tones that loud for that long draws peak power.

id say no as well.moral to the story test tones.can be unusually brutal for subs.no cool down time between cycles.like when playing a movie or music.

Test tones at a higher frequency means less movement = less cooling for that amount of power. If you're just playing regular content, the sub will get enough cooling. That's assuming it was the driver that blew.

Svs just got fucking owned. Also, the excursion on these subs was pretty lackluster. Looked like about 0.5 inches (1 inch total) excursion on the sb 4000 and even less on the other 3. Considering the price of these things youd have to be an idiot to not get a sunfire sub. The xteq 12 would wipe the floor with these svs subs

You let the factory installed smoke escape the transistors! Don't breath that. Transistors and integrated circuits are doped with arsenic. Not good to breath! By doping I mean they are made of silicon. Silicon is an insulated. It is impregnated with Arsenic on one side so that when you activate the transistor it allows current to flow through it. Arsenic is a conductor and the two materials put together make it a semiconductor under certain conditions. But when you pass too much current through it the heat generated burns up the transistor, releasing the arsenic into the air. So, don't do that thing! Keep in mind that a good amplifier has a hi temp cutout. Years ago I was repairing a pair of speakers for a friend and hooked it up to my receiver to test it. But I hadn't set it up yet so one 4 ohm speaker was all that was hooked up to it. This made it run hot enough to go into thermal shut down. I thought I had destroyed my amp, but after waiting a half hour I hooked up both speakers and it worked just fine. In fact I still have that amp. I need to clean the volume pot, and then I can put it back into service. But in the mean time I bought one of those little class D amps, and it sounds ok, but it doesn't have any tone controls or tape loop to hook an equilizer up to. I'm thinking of building a unity gain tube preamp so that I can insert an eq ahead of the amp, and use it to switch between components.
