I think the female protagonist who constantly shits on other girls could be a refreshing flaw if the character was called out on it, I would love to see a love interest get upset with the main character for that behavior.
@dani010203stor

that would be amazing. The main female "not like everyone else" character not getting the guy at the end, with him ending up with the "popular" or "slut" or whatever and the protagonist realizing that this girl he loves is actually not a slut and it's actually a great person who just lives her life would be great too.

Egirl Winter It definitely would be more realistic. Believe it or not, the majority of people do not like it when their partner acts jealous and petty towards the same sex (I’m saying this because even though girls are the most associated with it, guys can be guilty of it too). Don’t get me wrong, some people do cheat on their partner but most are faithful and want their significant other to know that they truly love them and to trust that they would choose them no matter who or what comes along.

My high school's social hierarchy was actually based on how: 1. Rich you were 2. Good looking you are 3. Smart/athletic you are The people there were ruthless and cared about how much influence a person has, how they looked like, even down to the things they had and whether they were cute or expensive or something you got really cheap or secondhand. Bullying was the norm and cliques were def there. Take note, this was a Catholic school and the nuns basically turned a blind eye to all these Edit: also re the spreading of rumors? Tea Spillers have NOTHING on how everybody from my school was

You know what I hate about this trope? The main character will be like 'oh, people don't like me because I'm different' And I'l be like: No, people don't like you because you constantly judge every one else for doing the things that they like, that you find too 'normal' or mainstream.

Why do authors think it's relatable when their characters hate on other girls? You can make your character insecure without them being an asshole... Anyways, loved the video!
@ladygrey4113
@ladygrey4113 4 года назад
Or you can justify better why the character loathes the other people. Like maybe they’re entitled prats, they bully other people or they’re genuinely irritating in some way.
@wii3willRule
@wii3willRule 4 года назад
I mean, in a way, I feel like insecurity often results in assholery irl. I find that when I'm being judgmental towards myself, I tend to apply that same judgemental mentality to others. Thankfully, I'm able to catch myself, but the cliche saying "you need to love yourself before you can love others" seems to have some truth to it. The problem with characters like her is that they're never called out on that asshole behavior and are even implicitly praised for it by the author.

" I'm not like other girls", I feel that this line is misogynistic and full of internalized misogyny. It puts other girls down and doing that is horrible and sexist. These tropes are toxic and showing that other girls with makeup, crop-tops etc have less value. Well, excuse me, but other girls should be valued equally.

Growing out of this phase was the best part of my life and looking back it’s so sad how much I hated being a girl. I hate the trope and I hate it even more that it’s probably popular because so many girls are made fun of for being girls and so they gravitate towards this sort of thing. I seriously wish that this wasn’t such a popular trope bc it’s really sad to know people hate their femininity so much and devalue those who present them. This is kind of a long winded way to agree with you lol

i think at the root of it, "i'm not like other girls" meant "i'm not a brainless copy-pasted version of the same stupid model". it was a way to say hey, i'm my own person. and all in all, i don't think that's a bad thing. it's evolved into a meme basically, because it was so overused and turned exactly into what it wanted to combat: a mindless cliche - which is sort of messed up, if you think about it, the fact that so many girls felt the need to say it so many times, like hey, i'm different!! because everybody just lumped teenage girls into one big you're-all-the-same anyway peace, loved the video casey!
@livcaitbff
@livcaitbff 5 лет назад
Maria Nedelcu the thing is, other girls ARENT "brainless copy-pasted versions of the same stupid model". There's no need to hate on other people to lift yourself up, especially because no one is as special as they think. We're all unique in our own ways. Just because you don't like popular things, doesn't automatically make you some superior being in a world of lesser people, y'know? (I don't mean you in particular, just the people who think this way) At the end of the day, we just need to let people be themselves

I hate it when authors try to portray a nerdy, more 'real' female character by using the 'not like other girls' trope and making them hate fashion and makeup. Girls can be smart and quirky while still having a style! Hell, most girls do. You can portray a nerd character by having her have a closet full of comic book t-shirts, or some kind of vintage jacket she explains the historical facts about, or be into a subculture that people tease her about, or have her mention the clothes she has to wear for nerdy activities (worn out and messy clothes for a shop class, a bunch of blazers for debate or model UN, stuff like that). Because really, by just saying "she never wore makeup and just threw on a sweater in the morning," writers are eliminating options! A person's style often reflects their interests and personality, and an author could use their style to build up a character's identity in a subtle and interesting way.

Scififan9000 :P There is a book like that. It’s called Restart by Gordon Korman. I’ll just write the summary. Chase’s memory just went out the window. Chase doesn’t remember falling off the roof. He doesn’t remember hitting his head. He doesn’t, in fact, remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life all over again.... starting with his own name. He knows he’s Chase. But who is Chase? When he gets back to school, he sees that different kids have very different reactions to his return. Some kids treat him like a hero. Some kids are clearly afraid of him. One girl in particular is so angry with him that she pours her frozen yogurt on his head the first chance she gets. Pretty soon, it’s not only a question of who Chase is- It’s a question of who he was... and who he’s going to be. There’s no love story it’s just Chase and his discoveries.

I'm so tired of seeing books that write high schoolers like "Oh look, someone is dating! We can't stop watching them!" Lmao it's so inaccurate literally nobody in high school cares that much unless it's a close friend who's been teasing you about getting with your crush for a year now. At most a few people would glance in your direction and get back to their own business. If real-life high schoolers reacted that way to couples we'd always be staring at somebody the whole time because there are a lot of high school couples who do stuff like hold hands in the hallways lol. Also, the "you're not like other girls" trope really is so annoying and usually has some toxic opinions about "other girls" following it as well, there's really no reason for any author to still think it's likable or even acceptable. EDIT: I know this entire comment is basically just restating what you said in the video, I just can't /not/ get mad whenever I see these in books, lol.

I'm 18, and even thought I'm about to leave high school I still think I've been there long enough to speak for it. Even though I mostly agree, there is that 1% of couples that a lot of people do get invested in, and that's it they're really fun. Not so much important (like president) or just nice or popular, but fun. Like if one of them did something like idk painted the principal's office blue, and people are constantly checking in to see what they're up to next, then they would be interested in their love life.

Yeah lol even with the occasional couple that people care about it's not common enough for YA books to use it so often and it never happens in the way they act like it does in those books.

My favorite is when the author also mentions that this is going on at a big school. I went to a large high school (over 5,000 students) and no one cared in the slightest who was dating who. The closest anyone got being 'popular' was this one guy who was super nice and smart, and that was because he had a Troy Bolton moment sophmore year where he had to chose between being on the varsity football team or the top choir. Other than him I cannot think of a single person/relationship that anyone was invested in. Sure if someone did something crazy (one time a couple was caught having sex in a practice room) the news eventually got around, but it could take months before you knew about and most of the time you had no idea who they were!

As a writer, I hate these type of videos. I find them super negative and not containing any constructive criticism. But, when I come to your channel you articulate your issues with the book, and give actual examples of problematic behavior before you give your opinion. They're super helpful when I'm fleshing out my characters and can remind myself of what to avoid/highlight. Great video👏🏽

Jesus, I thought this trope died. These "coming of age" stories really annoy me, because the character only grows in one (1) way. I mean, if I wanted to write my "coming-of-age" story and had to focus only on one aspect of my self growth, it would be impossible. The author of this book focuses on finding beauty within your self. However, that road is so long and hard that most of the time you need to overcome many more obstacles to get to the finish line. When I learned to see beauty within myself, I also grew up in many different ways, both physically and mentally. Eg. I needed to come to terms with why I hated and was against make-up so much, when it did me no harm. So fuck these books

Sumner Stuart I think the most important thing is confidence. Although I'm still working on it, I've noticed how much even little bit of it changed me. I started wearing clothes that flatter my body type but also I became more active in class (even though it has nothing to do with beauty, but these things affect all areas of your life). However, confidence is not enough. A house cannot be built on lousy pillars so often times you'll find that you are losing this confidence easily. That's why we need to see ourselves as good enough. If you try your best and you still don't succeed you need to appreciate the effort you put in and not cast it away. Also, the coming-of-age time is when we explore so many new things of life. It can be really hard to focus on either confidence or trying to be sociable when all you can think about is art or sport or music. That's why it's most important to see ourselves as enough. I may not be able to be focused on dressing up too much when my main priority is school or family. But that's okay. Sometimes we need to prioritise things in our life. But the more we practice confidence (ie teaching ourselves to accept compliments or approach and talk to other people) it will come naturally. Trough this confidence we will find even more great opportunities to learn from. But that's just my take on it...

These types of YA novels just make me want to write one of my own that would be called " (...) like other girls." And it would start off with the main character being a "not like other girls" high school freshman and likes having guys' validation for it until she realizes that she likes other girls and is attracted to them and she has to open her eyes about them, with the help of maybe two or three each very different girl characters from her school (crushes, girfriends) who have her realize how vast and amazing girlhood and individual girls can be. Welp.

I never, ever want to pick up that book. This whole thing about trashing girls for choosing to wear a dab of foundation or a flick of mascara, or happening to be pretty is so toxic and, like you said, should not be happening in today's supposedly liberal society. It literally *DOES NOT MATTER* what someone chooses to wear or not wear. Nobody really cares all that much - at least not as much as these 'modern everyday heroine' characters would have you believe. I'm also one of those -well endowed- girls, and it makes me really self-conscious when I wear low-cut tops. The last thing we need is books perpetuating the myth that, just because of literal balls of tissue on our chests, we're sluts. No frikken thank you. Wow, sorry. Rant over.

The whole "Look at me I am so different" story is too much for me, cause you can tell the author is trying hard to create a unique character, which is difficult considering the amount of books that have already been written, but it is not impossible. It is unfortunate that most main characters end up being the "I am looking down at others " girl/boy, like you said it is very condescending and sometimes even slightly narcissistic. I have noticed that the majority of those characters are written up to be the "nerd", the one that is so woke and sees what really matters in the world, while the rest of the world is running around brainless, mainly focusing on their appearance (you know the matericalistic things, that are "so stupid"). Or you get a perfect character The girl or boy of your dreams, who is unseasoned and boring . If you are lucky you get both.....yayyy. Luckily there are still so many good books out, that make me excited for the future

Come on, we all know when track girls in high school are about to run a big race (that they’ve been training for all year) their main concern is to make sure their mobile milk bars are on full display. They’re not shaking like a heroin addict and feeling like they’re going to pass out from anxiety. They’re just hoping that nerds stare at them while they transform into a sweaty, panting mess. The whole point of a track bra is to make sure a girl’s breasts don’t get in the way. Nobody wears that to “display” what they’ve got. I really hate when people that don’t do sports or work out think “oh. People just do that cause they’re self obsorbed.”

Casey Aonso I also wonder if they assume their target demographic is nerdy, makeup free girls who are pining over the track star and hating popular girls and write accordingly. There could be some basic, shitty marketing at play here too. Whatever the case, it's really gross and does nothing to edify our younger generation. Again, there's a chance to represent some of these more vulnerable, insecure thought processes and relationships with other girls without reinforcing or encouraging them. Like I think you mentioned, show some progression in how confidence creates a healthy attitude towards other girls. I know I'm high school, I absolutely had insecure thoughts about other women. Ultimately, though, my female friendships were the strongest and helped shape my confidence and who I am today. Also, I was a very serious policy debater in HS and even I struggle to see how lots of debate play by play would be interesting to read. Strange choice.

When it comes to YA, I tend to stick with fantasy/dystopian/thriller stuff. I feel like if I tried to read a contemporary YA book I would want to bang my head on something, lol, but that's just me. Yeah this trope is annoying. One thing that has annoyed me with YA in the past is the tendency to ALWAYS have a love interest. For example, I read the Warrior Heir by Cinda Williams Chima last year. It was REALLY good, but of course the only part I didn't like was the romance. It was literally there just for the sake of having a romantic plot line. It could've not been there and the story wouldn't have been effected at all. But really I've just come to expect it, so when it happens it doesn't bother me all that much. And if it's written well then I might even get into it. But sometimes...the story is REALLY good and it absolutely doesn't need a romantic love interest....but it's still there. Grrrr.

I think the issue is that these characteristics aren’t portrayed as flaws in these sort of books. If a character gets envious easily and uses other girls to raise herself but it’s addressed in the story and she works through it, then it wouldn’t be a problem but rather a character trait. But the way this is written normalizes putting down others as a characteristic that is okay.

I remember always saying "I'm not like other girls" in like elementary school, but turns out it was me repressing the feminine part of my personality. I'm a transboy, and use EXCLUSIVELY he/him pronouns, but I relate to girls more than other guys. Not because of my sex, but because of society. The "not like other girls" trope in just one of the examples how misogyny is so prominent in our present culture. It's degrading to be feminine, therefore the other boys around me are too scared to have ever embraced that part of themselves. When I first transitioned I snuffed out anything feminine about me, not realizing that I was only making things worse in myself. Everyone has at least some femininity, but society treats it like a bad thing. Accepting it is, not to sound dramatic, but a true form of liberation from a shackle that holds a lot of people back .

When you mentioned the scene where the entire school is reacting to the two of them holding hands, as if people actually care that much, I laughed so hard. I see this a LOT, both in printed books and in fanfiction. I think a lot of teenage girls (and apparently a few select YA authors) really like the idea of having people admire/notice/gawk at anything that indicates you have a relationship with someone, like getting yourself a boyfriend is some insane accomplishment. Having your first kiss in public, for the whole school to see, is also pretty common that way. And, like, I get that it's nice to fantasize about having a relationship with someone and showing the whole world how in love you are, but at the same time... who the hell would want to have their first kiss (and in some cases, full on make-out session) in front of a friggin' audience?? o_o It's so awkward and uncomfortable!!

The "I'm not like other girls" trope has always irritated me. What do you even mean that you're not like other girls??? "I'm not like other girls, I wear sneakers and I don't care about makeup". Um, a lot of girls do the exact same thing, it's not special. If this is supposed to make the female character "more empowering" or "a strong female character", it just comes off as misogynistic since you're basically saying it's wrong for girls to like doing feminine things as if it's a crime or something. Heck, I'm a self-proclaimed tomboy, but this trope will always make me groan and burn up in rage.

This is why I don't read realistic YA fiction. You didn't really expound on this, but the book seems like it's pushing the narrative that self-esteem issues can be solved when a guy tells you you're pretty. This is really toxic--self esteem and self worth isn't something someone else can give you, and it's really unhealthy to tell girls that they'll only feel confident when a boy likes them.

i feel like the 'im not like other girls' trait where the protagonist constantly puts other girls down could be such an interesting character trait if the writer treated it like a flaw and not a positive trait. like you said, this trait often makes the character seemed flawed (which, in my opinion, is great. i think ALL characters should have some flaws, that's what makes them realistic.) and if the writer used that to their advantage and have the character work towards fixing that flaw over the course of the novel and change their view on other women + improve her relationship with other women, i feel like that would be SUCH an interesting character journey/development if handled correctly

Saw this one on Amazon Vine, didn't sound like something I'd like. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have a heroine who does that "I'm not like other girls" bullshit. The problem is that it's treated like an acceptable attitude, instead of the character flaw that it is. It'd be great if there were a book where the main character realized how petty it is and grew past it.

I feel like a lot of YA authors either forgot about their high school experience or that high schoolers (and i mean this in the nicest way possible) are too self absorbed to care about others not in their immediate bubble. The "I'm not like other girls" trope should have been left in the previous decade, it's just so booooooring. I will say that I'd like to see it used as an actual character flaw in a story and the character will grow past that idea. I think that'd be an interesting spin. EDIT: Also maybe the book could be improved in Janie realizing she shouldn't base all her self worth in what a boy thinks? Great vid!!

I HAVE TO TELL YOU you have the most magical eyes ever. I love them. Beautiful. Aside from that: This is a really nice critique on the book... and kind of every other YA book out there. It's hard to find much that's really substantial anymore. Your backdrop is also really kinda soothing, haha! I'll be watching your other videos!

honestly the only time “not like other girls” is acceptable (to me) is when it’s given to a female character as a compliment and she immediately rejects it and gets upset with the (male) character that thought that was a nice thing to say. it’s a nice change of pace

If I may suggest a book if you haven't read it already? It's called "All the Bright Places". It's a beautiful book, and as someone who honestly does NOT like YA, this book was beyond incredible. It dwells into the whole mental health issue so if you don't like, that, you probably shouldn't read it. But the romance is pure and incredibly one of a kind and is carried out in a realistic, and relatable way. And it isn't afraid to confront real life issues, which I love. And better yet? Nobody puts any person, gender, or race down. It's a completely, as I like to say, handsome and fair story and I highly suggest you read it. Beware it has a sorta sad ending but not really??? But it's realistic and I love that. No trope found. Sorry for the long paragraph. Loved the video

Like I just want to understand why being like other girls is a problem??? When I was growing up all I wanted was to fit in with the other girls. I hated feeling like an outcast and I honestly don't understand why this trope exist at all. I don't think it reflects people as they truly are. I feel like everyone craves to find a place where they can feel accepted and comfortable in their skin and this trope just takes that basic human principal and throws it out the window. Why? Because she's not like other girlz.

Casey Aonso Right!!! But like that's lowkey on the highkey not realistic??? At least not the way that it portrayed in media and novels. In my opinion, if someone is well and truly the "I don't care" badass personality type then they wouldn't feel the need to constantly bombard the reader/viewer with examples on why they're special. And most definately not to put others down in order to make themselves feel better!

Thank you for standing against that whole 'boob hanging out' comment that every single protagonists feel like saying! Just because she looks like a 12 year old does that mean that other girls who have boobs are slutty? It annoys me so much cause according to these books, Big breast=slutty

I've always was a tomboy but I NEVER hated other girls or thought that they are whores or something. Yes, I'm not interested in cosmetics or clothes, that's why I don't participate in conversations about those topics, but it's not everything girls talk about, a lot of them like video games and horror movies just like me. Stereotypes about "girls who are not like the others" hating "normal" girls only harm real-life girls who don't fit in with others.

There's. Nothing. Wrong. With. "Other". "Girls". Putting them down is the real problem. I graduated from my girls-only high school 4 years ago, and while there were insecurity-fueled incidents (and drama) throughout my time there, hearing YA book synopses is like peering into an entirely different world. The author, an adult, ought to know better and try to transmit better messages for her young, impressionable audience. Ironically, my last year of college was more of a YA novel than my time in high school!

Yes girl! The "special snowflake" trope drives me crazy. I think it can be an interesting trope if the main character judges other girls for their appearance and then learns later on that she was wrong for doing do. But most books don't do that. The character thinks they are totally justified.

People are naturally jealous, it's a real emotion, negative or not. But when books do this, the constant hate on other females, it's just horrible and distasteful. It should strive to show that the main can differentiate between real dislike and biased/jealous dislike. And if not, then it's a great chance to have character growth.

Do you know what I want to see? A story where none of the main protagonists are 'naturally beautiful.' There is nothing wrong with having average looks, and those books with boys who are super popular because they're objectively hot to everyone annoy me. 'Hotness' is a personal standard that's different to each person. I mean, it's different when someone's described as "She was a pretty girl with a nice smile and clear blue eyes" or even "He had gorgeous long brown hair", but those beloved popular kids in stories who have teems of people trailing after them are so unrealistic and common. Anyway, I loved this and the points you brought up!

I feel like if they had the character start off with a “put others down to bring self up” mannerism, and then as they mature and develop realize that is a shitty thing to do and learn to love themselves while bringing other people up with them.

When you described the way that she puts other people down constantly and silently judges others immediately reminded me of my mother. My mom always randomly tells my brother and I flaws that she sees in random ass strangers. It doesn't matter where we are. Obviously the character is extremely insecure, so she feels the need to constantly pick on everybody else. This is most likely intensed by the author, but it would be great if it were acknowleged in the book. I feel like it would be cool if someone called her out on that annoying shit and she had a moment to think about it and realized that the way she sees other girls is toxic and that she should build her own self-esteem.

Honestly, When main characters are like that I just put the book down. It makes girls seem stupid and vapid when most girls now a days are like "omg she's so pretty" or "dang she's smart" not what YA tries to portray smh

I love this review because these are my exact same frustrations with YA and why I don't read it as much anymore. I wouldn't have such a problem with this trope if the character putting down others was actually presented as a flaw and they turn around at the end, but that's never the case. Their issues with others girls are never resolved, and I feel like books centered around the average girl would be ten times better without the constant trashing of girls who like doing things other than fitting every stereotype of a nerdy tomboy. And I'm considered a tomboy myself. But it's just embarrassing.
